The first paper proposed a conceptual model demonstrating the antecedents and outcomes of consumers' online tourism information confusion through the integration of information providers (i.e., online tourism marketers) and information receivers' (i.e., consumers) perspectives. from information providers' perspective, too much, too similar, and too ambiguous information provided by various online tourism websites are three major causes of consumers' confusion. from information receivers' perspective, five individual difference variables: Internet experience, learning orientation, tolerance of ambiguity, price consciousness, and need for cognition are proposed as important traits that might predispose consumers to confusion. furthermore, five confusion reduction strategies derived from consumer confusion literature are included in the model as the outcomes of consumers' online tourism information confusion. Managerial implications for online tourism marketers are provided. from information recipient's perspective, the second paper developed a research model with three individual characteristics (1. learning orientation 2. price consciousness 3. need for cognition) representing important antecedents and five confusion reduction strategies (1. sharing/delegate the purchase 2. seek additional information 3. rely on familiar websites and sources 4. abandon the purchase 5. clarify the purchase goals) representing important outcomes of travelers online tourism confusion. Data of this study was collected from 437 tourism website users, and six proposed hypotheses were tested utilizing a structural equation modeling approach and a series of regression analysis. Managerial implications for online tourism marketers who want to address consumers' confusion in online tourism domain are provided. The process of suburbanization blurs regional bounds, forms mega-regions and fosters the expansion of multifaceted environmental problems, such as the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Defined by differences in air- and surface- temperature between rural and urban areas, UHI is the result of the characteristics of urbanization which modify the land surface condition, urban geometry, thermal properties of construction materials, anthropogenic heat and air pollution, which increase storage and re-radiation of heat to the atmosphere. Climate change is predicted to worsen the UHI effect. Hence, the objective of this research to characterize the UHI effect as it pertains to suburban and exurban development patterns, which are neither low-density rural nor high-density urban, yet the dominant landscape pattern in America's mega-regions. Using multi-resolution remote sensing data, this dissertation describes the geography of the surface urban heat island (SUHI) effect across the New York Metropolitan Region's urban-rural continuum and the influence of residential minimum lot size zoning regulations on the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Brightness Temperature. The study area for this research endeavor is Somerset County, New Jersey. An inverse relationship exists between NDVI and Brightness Temperature, where increases in vegetation and tax lot size reduce Brightness Temperature; and therefore UHI Intensity. However, utilization of a cumulative metric, such as net thermal flux by tax lot, is critical to illuminate the role that suburbanization has on the expansion of regional environmental problems. The Landsat ETM imagery combined with tax lot data provide an efficient and effective method for assessing the cumulative impact of suburban development in the study area and evaluating mitigation techniques to lower urban heat, save energy and facilitate reintroduction of natural elements into urban environments. Chinese floating population children are at risk for being the target of teasing and bullying, and for experiencing loneliness, lower self-esteem, and lack of opportunity to develop social skills. The overall goal of the dissertation project was to examine the factors that may contribute to Chinese floating population children's social and emotional development. first, the roles of determinants of parenting (maternal psychological well-being, acculturation to the urban culture, and social support), parenting styles (authoritarian parenting and authoritative parenting), and indigenous parenting practices (shaming/love withdrawal and maternal involvement) on Chinese floating population children's anxious shyness, regulated shyness and internalizing problems were explored. further, the complex relations between parenting styles, child effortful control, and three child shyness subtypes (temperamental shyness, anxious shyness, and regulated shyness) were examined in moderated mediation models. four hundred and eighty Chinese floating population mothers with preschool children residing in three cities in Guangdong Province, China participated in the study. The results showed that floating population mothers' acculturation to the urban culture was associated with greater maternal endorsement of the authoritative parenting style and less engagement in the authoritarian parenting style. Also, maternal authoritarian parenting style mediated the relation between mothers' acculturation to the urban culture and children's display of regulated shyness. Moreover, the results from the moderated mediation models indicated that floating population mothers' authoritarian parenting style was negatively associated with their children's effortful control. Child effortful control was in turn positively related to children's regulated shyness, but only for children with low levels of temperamental shyness. This ethnographic study will analyze data collected through field-based observations,primary ritual texts,and locally conducted interviews of the yin-yang practitioners in the three small villages of fanmagou,Qijiazhuang,and Wangdazhuang in northwestern China. The practice referred to as yin-yang in this region is part of an archaic folk religious system that can be traced back to at least the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Despite its deep cultural roots,it is becoming endangered due to the impact of national policies (governing religion and culture) and the general adaptation to modernity in China. Due to the localized nature of this cultural system,the main research method used will be qualitative ethnographic description,with a Geertzian "thick description" approach to interpretive analysis. The collected data is roughly divided into three categories: (1) transcriptions of interviews with yin-yang practitioners and other local villagers;(2) video tapes,photographs,and field notes of local religious rituals,specifically memorial and burial rites that are led by the yin-yang practitioners,and (3) my own translations of yin-yang scriptural texts that are used in leading the rituals themselves,as well as for the teaching and training of young yin-yang apprentices. The interpretive ethnography that is produced from these rich primary sources will also be considered for its curriculum applications in two primary higher education contexts: 1) As a rich primary source for courses in Chinese culture and language--conducted in either Chinese or English language context,and 2) As a source of engaging and culturally relevant texts for courses in content-based ESOL for Chinese students (in China presumably).

Each year, over 300 billion dollars of print coupons are distributed, yet the redemption rate is less than one percent. As of 2010, 93% of the U.S. population has one or more cell phones providing anytime, anywhere access. Despite the 2009 economic downturn, Americans still spend 41% of their food budget outside of the home. The specific problem to be studied is the behavioral intention of young adults, 18 to 24 years of age, attending private, non-profit universities to use mobile coupons for casual restaurant dining. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional correlation study was determining the relationship between five independent variables: (a) performance expectancy, (b) effort expectancy, (c) social influence, (d) fear of spam, and (e) opting-in; and one dependent variable: participants' behavioral intention to use mobile coupons for casual restaurant dining. The results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between all of the variables except fear of spam and the dependent variable: the behavioral intention to use mobile coupons for casual dining restaurants. There was no relationship between the fear of spam and the behavioral intention to use mobile coupons. This, in itself, was an important finding. Recommendations for using mobile coupons include coupon promotion as a component of the marketing mix, mobile coupons as a unique way of encouraging new menu items, creating an easy path to opt-in, and creative ideas for coupon face-value promotions. Mobile coupons have the potential to exceed the redemption rates of printed coupons.

Since their development in the 1990s, gridded reanalysis data sets have proven quite useful for a broad range of synoptic climatological analyses, especially those utilizing a map pattern classification approach. However, their use in broad-scale, surface weather typing classifications and applications have not yet been explored. This research details the development of such a gridded weather typing classification (GWTC) scheme using North American Regional Reanalysis data for 1979-2010 for the continental United States. Utilizing eight-times daily observations of temperature, dew point, pressure, cloud cover, u-wind and v-wind components, the GWTC categorizes the daily surface weather of 2,070 locations into one of 11 discrete weather types, nine core types and two transitional types, that remain consistent throughout the domain. Due to the use of an automated deseasonalized z-score initial typing procedure, the character of each type is both geographically and seasonally relative, allowing each core weather type to occur at every location, at any time of the year. Diagnostic statistics reveal a high degree of spatial cohesion among the weather types classified at neighboring locations, along with an effective partitioning of the climate variability of individual locations (via a Variability Skill Score metric) into these 11 weather types. Daily maps of the spatial distribution of GWTC weather types across the United States correspond well to traditional surface weather maps, and comparisons of the GWTC with the Spatial Synoptic Classification are also favorable. While the potential future utility of the classification is expected to be primarily for the resultant calendars of daily weather types at specific locations, the automation of the methodology allows the classification to be easily repeatable, and therefore, easily transportable to other locations, atmospheric levels, and data sets (including output from gridded general circulation models). further,

The growth of mobile phone use has paralleled increased reports of identity theft. Identity theft can result in financial loss and threats to a victim's personal safety. Although trends in identity theft are well-known, less is known about individual cell phone users' attitudes toward identity theft and the extent to which they connect it to cell phone use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how cell phone use is affected by attitudes toward privacy and identity theft. The study was based on social impact theory, according to which people's attitudes and behavior are affected by the strength and immediacy of others' attitudes and behavior. The research questions concerned the extent to which participants connected cell phone use with decreasing privacy and increasing cybercrime, how the use of biometrics affected cell phone users' attitudes and behavior, and what steps can be taken to reduce the misuse of private information associated with cell phone use. Data collection consisted of personal interviews with representatives from 3 groups: a private biometrics company, individual cell phone users who earn more than $55,000 a year, and individual cell phone users who earn less than $55,000 a year. Interviews were transcribed and coded for themes and patterns. findings showed that interviewees were more likely to see identity theft as a problem among the public at large than in the industries in which they worked. Participants recommended a variety of measures to improve cell phone security and to reduce the likelihood of identity theft: passwords, security codes, voice or fingerprint recognition, and encryption. The implications for positive social change include informing government officials and individual users about the use and abuse of cell phones in order to decrease violations of privacy and identity theft while still promoting national security.

Local and regional procurement (LRP) relative to global food aid deliveries saw a sharp increase from 8% in 2001 to a historical high of nearly 30% in 2011. Despite this growing importance, relatively little is known about the LRP impacts on local market prices, household welfare, and food supply chains, especially in countries where LRP has represented a meaningful share of marketed surplus. This dissertation addresses this knowledge gap using three self-contained but related essays. Essay one assesses the World food Program (WfP) LRP effects on the level and variability of market prices for maize in Uganda and Mozambique, and beans in Ethiopia. Using data spanning 2001 to 2011, we employ two complementary methodologies as a consistency check: (1) a vector autoregression (VAR) model, which is a reduced-form econometric approach; and (2) a computational model (CM), which is a structural modeling approach. Results from the VAR show average price increases brought about by LRP are statistically significant, ranging from 2% in Nampula (Mozambique) to 16% in Lira (Uganda). In all three country applications, LRP has no economically meaningful effect on price variability. When LRP is at its historical mean levels, price effects from the CM fall within the 90% confidence bounds obtained from the VAR. This suggests that the two complementary methodologies deliver consistent results. Price increases induced by LRP purchases have welfare implications for households that buy and/or sell those commodities. In essay two, we use nationally representative household-level data to convert the estimated price increases into estimates of the corresponding household welfare effects. This is accomplished by estimating the household's willingness to accept compensation for the price increase. Due to data limitations, essay two focuses only on maize in Uganda and Mozambique. Narrative is one of the fundamental cognitive tools that we use to understand the world around us. When interacting with other humans we rely on a shared knowledge of narrative structure,but in order to enable this kind of communication with digital artifacts we must first formalize these narrative conventions. Narratology,computer science,and cognitive science have formed a symbiotic relationship around this endeavor to create computational models of narrative. These models provide us a deeper understanding of story structure and will enable us to create a fundamentally new kind of interactive narrative experience in which the author,the audience,and the machine all participate in the story composition process. This document presents a computational model of narrative conflict,its empirical evaluation,and its deployment in an interactive narrative experience. Narratologists have described conflict in terms of the difficulties that an intelligent agent encounters while executing a plan to achieve a gol.. This definition is inherently plan-based,and has been integrated into an existing model of narrative based on the data structures and algorithms of artificial intelligence planning|the process of constructing a sequence of actions to achieve a goal. The conflict Partial Order Causal Link (or CPOCL) model of narrative represents the events of a story along with their causal structure and temporal constraints. It extends previous models by representing non-executed actions which describe how an agent intended to complete its plans even if those plans failed,thus enabling an explicit representation of thwarted plans and conflict. The model also includes seven dimensions which can distinguish one conflict from another and provide authors with greater control over story generation: participants,topic,duration,balance,directness,intensity,and resolution. The purpose of this study is to isolate how the successful Church of God in Christ women leaders combine work,church and family life. This study explores the experiences that mold the life course of women and how they affect work-family life balance. The goal is to extract these strategies and provide them to other women interested in pursuing leadership roles in the church and in their careers all while balancing family life. Qualitative data was analyzed to find coping strategies,and themes. Giele (2008) developed the life course theoretical framework used in this study. She discussed the framework in her article entitled "Homemaker of Career Women: Life Course factors and Racial Influences Among Middle Class families." Giele's (2008) study focused on 48 women. After interviewing these women,Giele categorized these interviews in to 4 categories of questions,which are as follows: childhood,adulthood,current adulthood and future adulthood. Exploring these categories provide an inside look at each woman's perception of their identity,relationship types,motivations and adaptive styles. In 2011,Dr. Margaret Weber and her team duplicated Giele's study but later decided to add an additional set of questions to the semi-structured questionnaire. These additional questions were created to allow women an opportunity to share their coping strategies which can be used to inform others. The additional questions also help to complete the life course process and inform others (Weber,2011). This dissertation research is based on Giele's (2008) study and enhanced by Weber's (2011) additional set of questions. The life course framework helps to analyze the narratives of women and to isolate data pertaining to work-life balance. This phenomenological study strives to understand all contributors impacting this balance.
