Given comparatively lower land requisition cost, the rural fringes in Chinese cities are vulnerable to rapid urban expansion and restructuring. The thesis is aimed to better understand the urban transition in this particular city region by employing a case study which identifies high-speed rail (HSR)'s unsustainable environmental and social impacts on two nearby communities, Xuejia Village and Weixing Village, in Shanghai's southwest rural fringe from the perspective of local residents. Affected by the rail construction, the land use plans in the research sites have gradually shifted from primarily high-intensity agriculture to uses more closely aligned with transportation. Based on Godschalk's "sustainability/livability prism" and other sustainable development theories, four criteria—social equity, economic security, ecological integrity, and community livability—are developed to analyze the HSR's sustainability to nearby communities. The results uncover that the ecological integrity is disturbed and the community livability is at risk after the construction due to at least three aspects of deficiency—the governance deficiency, the legislation deficiency, and the planning deficiency. The social inequality and the economic insecurity have been the product of uneven compensation and the decreased life quality perceived by the affected dwellers. Simultaneously, the local residents are experiencing a process of "disconnection" and "deterritorialization" and perceiving a sense of "placelessness". This research urges people to rethink the current urban transition in Chinese cities' rural fringe regions. As Shanghai is set as China's most promising example, those unsustainable challenges need to be identified to advance China's environmental-friendly and social-harmoniously urbanization pursuit.

In order to present digital evidence in court, one must prove that a series of legal standards were met when said evidence was collected or generated. In order for an open source software tool to meet these standards, the tool must be reviewed in the following ways: the tool’s source code must be reviewed and must reflect the author(s) claims as to what the tool does and no more; the tool must be compiled and sandboxed to confirm the binary’s functionality; and the tool must be stress tested to confirm consistency of output. These three steps will be accomplished during the course of this paper which will provide a general template applicable to any OSS tool. The tool will be compiled and tested inside of a sandbox to ensure that no suspicious processes are run, and no suspicious ports are opened, etc. The tool will then be tested in extreme conditions i.e. on huge, tiny, corrupted, encrypted, or illegitimate files and the resultant output will be evaluated. The goal is to equip an investigator with documentation that can be used in court to prove the legitimacy of the tool and its methods. The investigator will then learn how the tool works and when it doesn’t. This understanding as well as the documentation backing up the tool will shield the investigator from common legal attacks levied from the other side of the bench. This thesis uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) and frantz fanon's theory of violence to explore the questions: What discourses on race and affirmative action have the Supreme Court constructed and how do they connect to larger U.S. ideologies surrounding race? To answer these questions I conduct a Critical Race discourse analysis of three anti-affirmative action court cases: Grutter v. Bollinger (2003), Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1 (2007), and Abigail fisher v. University of Texas Austin (2013). I describe the Court's use of a "race-neutral aspiration" discourse, a "cultural deficit" discourse, and a "White racial innocence" discourse to undermine affirmative action. I argue that these discourses are part of larger racial ideologies—colorblindness and post-racialism—where racial difference is violent toward people of color, as it decouples race from power. The conclusion of this thesis discusses this violence at selective universities, particularly through diversity.

In a world of ever-developing impersonal media, oral traditions remain a way in which people can revisit the stories of history told by those who lived it. Oral history holds a great amount of value both for families and for society as a whole as it provides a way for us to look back on history and know the lives of everyday Americans. Idaho's Custer and Lemhi counties contain endless stories recounting history as experienced by those who lived it rather than through secondary texts that tell about it. Among the residents of these two rural counties are ranchers, miners, and outfitters who have experienced the land and life in a way that is unique and particular to those geographic areas. Unfortunately, the stories of these communities are vanishing as their tellers fade into time. As such, the endeavor of performing oral history research in Idaho's Custer and Lemhi counties has begun in order to preserve these voices and experiences as an important part of Idaho history and as a representation of these people's defining characteristics. The People's Republic of China pursues soft power in the western hemisphere to support its national interest. Joseph Nye's concept of soft power lacks the necessary detail to be considered mature theory, focuses far too heavily on soft power resource supply, and fails to account for state utility of soft power. As a result, Nye is wrongfully dismissive of China's soft power presence and capabilities. As the case of Latin America demonstrates, China's "utility of scale" soft power approach enables China to exact favorable policy outcomes that serve the national interest by driving its continued economic growth. Chinese soft power in Latin America has peripheral strategic implications, but does not directly impede on the long held Monroe Doctrine; rather, it very deliberately respects it. China's soft power reinforces a key component of PRC grand strategy called "hemispheric hedging," which provides a conceptual construct for understanding comprehensive Chinese smart power.

Data mining is the process of discovering patterns in large sets of data. In recent years there has been a paradigm shift in how the data is viewed. Instead of considering the data as static and available in databases, data is now regarded as a stream as it continuously flows into the system. One of the challenges posed by the stream is its dynamic nature, which leads to a phenomenon known as Concept Drift. This causes a need for stream mining algorithms which are adaptive incremental learners capable of evolving and adjusting to the changes in the stream. Several models have been developed to deal with Concept Drift. These systems are discussed in this thesis and a new system, the GC3 framework is proposed. The GC3 framework leverages the advantages of the Gris Density based Clustering and the Ensemble based classifiers for streaming data, to be able to detect the cause of the drift and deal with it accordingly. In order to demonstrate the functionality and performance of the framework a synthetic data stream called the TJSS stream is developed, which embodies a variety of drift scenarios, and the model’s behavior is analyzed over time. Experimental evaluation with the synthetic stream and two real world datasets demonstrated high prediction capability of the proposed system with a small ensemble size and labeling ratio. Comparison of the methodology with a traditional static model with no drifts detection capability and with existing ensemble techniques for stream classification, showed promising results. Also, the analysis of data structures maintained by the framework provided interpretability into the dynamics of the drift over time. The experimentation analysis of the GC3 framework shows it to be promising for use in dynamic drifting environments where concepts can be incrementally learned in the presence of only partially labeled data.

Monitoring routing in the Internet is a significant aspect of network security today. Incorrect information that is introduced into the system can result in problems ranging from a particular service or website becoming temporarily inaccesible, to large blocks of network addresses becoming cut off from the rest of the Internet, to potentially-sensitive user information being redirected to a malicious actor. Current monitoring projects generate a huge dataset for users for sift through. A single collection point collecting routing data from a dozen routers can archive 1800 update messages every 15 minutes. The largest current monitoring projects have 12-16 collection points, some of which can have several dozen routers feeding data into them, and some of which have been saving data for a decade or more. These archives are stored in a binary format called MRT that appends metadata about the particular routing session being monitored to the raw data received by a router. They also depend on tools to convert the binary into usable, but rigid, ASCII formats. Ideally, this data could be represented in a standardized ASCII format that both human user and machine application can make use of. furthermore, such a format ought to be able to be easily extended, whether to represent new features in the underlying data or to transport user-specific annotations, without creating compatibility problems. XML and XSD provide the mechanisms necessary to accomplish this and the framework necessary to do it in such a way that the resulting definitions can become standardized. This work presents an XSD-based generic format for representing the flow of routing data between arbitrary routers. To provide a concrete realization of this idea, additional schema are defined to describe Border Gateway Protocol messages and several common networking datatypes. This thesis aims to examine and critique the United States' historical response to genocide. Beginning with the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crimes of Genocide in 1948, the author will highlight the lives of Raphael Lemkin and Senator William Proxmire in their personal crusades for U.S. ratification of the genocide ban. Culminating in a case study of the genocide in Sudan, the U.S. foreign policy towards genocide will be evaluated and charted through its evolution since 1948, through to ratification, and then at its applications in Cambodia, Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Sudan. The self-proclaimed defender of human rights and peace loving, democratic institutions, the United States has historically fumbled the potential for positive, influential peace making roles on the international humanitarian stage. Examined against the backdrop of the geopolitics that defined, influenced, and ultimately dictated the foreign policy decisions, the author will examine the lessons that have been learned, missed, or ignored through the United States' history of genocide prevention and intervention since 1948.
