This thesis examines the reasons why the decade of the 1780s held such promise for the abolition of slavery as well as so many roadblocks to emancipation. The religious and political philosophies underlying the Early Republic Era, as well as the economic, political and the geopolitical realities, are central in its exploration. This thesis suggests that despite all the advantages that favored the ending of slavery nationwide during the decade, or at least setting up a mechanism to eventually end it on a national basis, the inertia of its existence hindered true emancipation. Primary and secondary sources indicate that the sheer magnitude of slaves held in the Deep South, coupled with the general impiety of man, trumped whatever logic for abolition could be advanced.

Remote Sensing applications have gained a lot of attention in recent years due to their cost effectiveness over applications involving in-situ observations. We conduct experiments using the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) a widely used library for satellite observations to observe and detect high temperature points and concentrations of aerosols such as PM2.5 for a given region. The CRTM [1] is a simulation library which requires atmosphere and surface data in the form of gridded profiles and solves the radiative transfer problem in clear or scattered atmosphere. The observations/radiances of CRTM [1] assume microwave and infrared sensor. The observations/radiances by the sensor are in the form of channel brightness temperatures or radiances at multiple wavelengths. We simulate the atmosphere and surface conditions using the real whether data. The CRTM [1] performs a forward operation and calculates a vector of channel brightness temperature for the given atmosphere and surface conditions. We use the channel brightness data to build models to detect high temperature points and estimate the concentration of PM2.5 using classification and regression trees respectively. We test the models for different time periods and regions. The aim of the research is to create an observation operator using the CRTM [1] which can be used where observations of satellite are required to evaluate predictions made by some other simulation models. In March 2011, Multnomah County's Juvenile Services Division (JSD) in Portland, Oregon implemented a new program model called functional family Probation Services, a case management model based on the principles of functional family Therapy. Under this model JSD Juvenile Court Counselors deliver functional family Probation Services to medium and high-risk youth on probation; both to the youth and their family in their home. This qualitative case study examined the extent to which the Juvenile Court Counselors and Community Justice Managers implemented functional family Probation Service's components and recorded their opinions regarding functional family Probation Services as a case management model. The study included observations of consultation meetings and interviews of 17 Juvenile Court Counselors, Community Justice Managers, and Senior Managers. The primary results of the study revealed that the functional family Probation Services intervention is well received by the county's youth and families and that functional family Probation Services increases family functioning. Additionally, both observations and self-reports from the Juvenile Court Counselors and Community Justice Managers indicate that functional family Probation Services requires individual and organizational changes critical for its successful implementation and sustainability.

As technology advances, collection efforts by both friendly and adversarial forces are using cyber methods to collect intelligence. It is paramount that the United States government identifies the potential cyber threats and employs counterintelligence efforts as appropriate. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the different aspects of computer network operations and their integration into counterintelligence efforts. Successful identification and implementation of computer network operations will increase the effectiveness of intelligence operations. To improve security, this paper recommends leveraging counterintelligence skills and techniques to assimilate cyber activities into the Intelligence cycle. While the following paper directs recommendations towards U.S. Government activities, the methods and procedures have application for private and public industries and other non-government entities. This thesis is set in the context of the Reconstruction to examine the United States Supreme Court interpretation of federalism, African American civil rights and the fourteenth Amendment. This thesis first compares federalism before and after the Civil War and the need to include Africans Americans in post war society. This thesis then explores arguments and debates surrounding the passage of the fourteenth Amendment and the civil rights legislation. finally, this thesis analyzes the United States Supreme Court's interpretation of the fourteenth Amendment and new civil rights legislation. During Reconstruction the United States Supreme Court upheld the traditional values of federalism and, therefore, the federal government could not interfere with state governments' protection of African American civil rights.

Microsoft Windows event logs are central to conducting an investigation when determining whether or not a virus has been installed on a targeted system. However, there was very little substantial research about Windows event logs and how they are used in conducting an investigation. This research explores forensic artifacts recovered during an investigation to determine whether or not a virus is the actual culprit. The research describes the relevance of the event logs and discusses various techniques used for investigators to collect and examine these logs. A dearth of viruses are installed and run in a virtual environment to determine what events will populate in these logs. This research also explains a variety of the best practices there are regarding the use of Windows event logs in an investigation. Background Bioactive plant compounds can contribute to prevent diseases related to oxidative stress. Some of these compounds are water soluble and fat soluble vitamins, carotenoids and a huge variety of phenolic compounds associated with the antioxidant activity (AOA). Objective The aim of this study was to study the antioxidant activity of Pavonia sepioides . Methods The AOA was evaluated by spectrophotometric methods using the free radical DPPH* and the ABTS*+ radical cation assays. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined by folin–Ciocalteu method and total flavonoid content (TfC) was determined by direct reaction with aluminum trichloride. The phenolic content was evaluated by GC/MS technique. Results The greatest antioxidant activity was found in ethyl acetate fraction (fea), The total ethanol extract (TE) showed good AOA in comparison with hexane fraction (fhx), dichloromethane fraction (fdc) and aqueous fraction (faq). The TPC and TfC analyses provided results consistent with the AOA with highest values for fea and ET respectively. Different phenolic compounds of low molecular weight were identified by GC/MS (Salicylic acid, cinnamic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, p-hydrocinnamic acid, vanillic acid, gentisic acid, p-cinnamic acid, o-Cinnamic acid, protocatechuic acid, syringic acid, m-cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid). These compounds could be associated with the named activity. The Pearson and Spearman association tests indicated a positive linear correlation between the AOA and TPC and TfC results, showing correlation coefficients greater than 0.810 in the Pearson test and greater than 0.700 in the Spearman test ( p < 0.05). Conclusion The AAO of P. sepioides (ET and purified fractions) was confirmed. The study provides evidence that P. sepioides is potential source of natural antioxidants showing positive correlations between phenolic contents and the AAO.

Kelly forks Work Center, located on the upper North fork of the Clearwater River on the Clearwater National forest, was recorded as an archaeological site (10CW34) in 1969. Surveys and limited testing projects conducted in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s demonstrated the presence of significant archaeological deposits at the site and this is supported by the findings of the most recent and comprehensive investigations conducted by the University of Idaho (UI) at 10CW34 between 2010 and 2012. In response to proposed developments by the United States forest Service (USfS), testing was conducted in four areas of the site, two of which provided intact evidence of repeated use of the site throughout the Holocene. Twenty-six radiocarbon dates, ranging from 13,740 to 280 cal. BP, documented recurring occupations of the site beginning in the early prehistoric period and continuing through the middle and late-prehistoric periods into historic times. Seventy-five obsidian and vitrophyre items from 10CW34 were submitted for x-ray fluorescence analysis and sixty were sourced to locations in Montana, Oregon, and southern Idaho, with Timber Butte comprising the largest percentage. Three soil samples and 123 artifacts recovered at 10CW34 were submitted for protein residue analysis. Twenty-nine tools and each of the soil samples registered forty-four positive reactions with nine mammal antisera, of which rabbit was the most frequent. The abundance and variety of stone tools and debitage recovered at 10CW34, along with the spatial and temporal distribution of these materials, indicates that this location served as an important upland campsite where hunting, fishing, game processing, and tool manufacture and repair were carried out within a wide-ranging network of trade and resource procurement in the southern Plateau, Northwest Plains, and Northern Rockies.

The past few years have yielded an increasing number of well-publicized news stories centering on data security breaches and information exploitation. Serious threats exist to our government systems, business information, and personal computing rights. It is an indisputable fact that tensions are high among data protection regulators, businesses, government, and law enforcement communities partly because security was often an afterthought when networks were connected. further complicating matters, our legal statutes are still catching up when it comes to prosecuting cyber-criminal activity. In this Capstone portfolio, three distinct cybersecurity topic areas are examined. These topics, titled The Smart Grid: A Cyber Threat Assessment, Next Generation Access Control, and Challenges to Law Enforcement in the Age of Encryption, were selected due to their relevance to Utica College’s Cybersecurity graduate study program. for each topic, the challenges are examined, vulnerabilities are surfaced, and recommendations are made to address each.
