A long-distance channel measurement campaign with a maximum distance of 45 km was performed in Trondheimsfjorden, Norway. In this paper, we give a detailed description of the channel measurements including route, RX and TX antenna sites and other channel parameters. The results of received signal level (RSL) obtained by using two different signal processing methods are demonstrated, and it is found that the influence of unwanted interference and noise becomes more than 2 dB at distances beyond 20 km, which proves the necessity of employing an interference-reduction method. The inbound trip RSL is found to be larger (similar to 6 dB) than for the outbound trip, which is assumed to be due to the "inbound" TX antenna resting on the furthermost edge of a large horizontal metal plane, which might act as a mirror to create its image. The path loss has been compared with the free-space model, the Okumura-Hata model, the COST 231-Hata model and the ITU-R P.1546-2 model, and it has been found that the ITU-R model for open cold sea corresponding to field-strength value exceeded at 50% of the locations fits the measurement results best. However, some important deep fadings visible in our measurements are not seen in these models. finally, the channel spatial correlation coefficient between the two RX-antennas is found to be less than 0.7 beyond a distance of 3 km. The ship turning and shadowing effect caused by other ships might, however, reduce the spatial correlation between the two RX channels.

This paper introduces an algorithm for the automated diagnosis of referable maculopathy in retinal images for diabetic retinopathy screening. Referable maculopathy is a potentially sight-threatening condition requiring immediate referral to an ophthalmologist from the screening service, and therefore accurate referral is extremely important. The algorithm uses a pipeline of detection and filtering of "peak points" with strong local contrast, segmentation of candidate lesions, extraction of features and classification by a multilayer perceptron. The optic nerve head and fovea are detected, so that the macula region can be identified and scanned. The algorithm is assessed against a reference standard database drawn from the Birmingham City Hospital (UK) diabetic retinopathy screening programme, against two possible modes of use: independent screening, and pre-filtering to reduce human screener workload.

We describe ModSpec, a MATLAB/Octave based specification format suitable for modelling devices across a wide variety of application domains, including circuits, optics, fluidics and biology. The ModSpec format and associated API are centered around describing the nonlinear differential equations at the core of any device model. The format is open, general and easy to use, and is supported by toolchains that translate and automatically differentiate models, set up equations for systems of interacting devices, and provide simulation facilities. We illustrate the use of ModSpec for modelling semiconductor, photovoltaic, fluidic and neuronal devices and systems.

Geographic Atrophy (GA) of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is an advanced form of atrophic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is responsible for about 20% of AMD-related legal blindness in the United States. Two different imaging modalities for retinas, infrared imaging and autofluorescence imaging, serve as interesting complimentary technologies for highlighting GA. In this work we explore the use of neural network classifiers in performing segmentation of GA in registered infrared (IR) and autofluorescence (Af) images. Our segmentation achieved a performance level of 82.5% sensitivity and 92.9% specificity on a per-pixel basis using hold-one-out validation testing. The algorithm, feature extraction, data set and experimental results are discussed and shown.

Ultrasound speed microscope was developed for quantitative measurement of ultrasonic parameters of soft tissues. The system can measure the ultrasonic attenuation and sound speed in the tissue using fast fourier transform of a single pulsed wave instead of burst waves used in conventional acoustic microscopy. Prostate biopsy tissues were formalin-fixed and sectioned approximately 5-6 mu m in thickness. They were mounted on glass slides without cover slips. The ultrasonic transducer was mechanically scanned over the specimen. Attenuation was 1.42+/-0.08 dB/mm and the sound speed was 1584+/-12 m/s in prostatic cancer while both values were 1.86+/-0.14 dB/mm and 1614+/-30 m/s in normal prostate. The basic measurements of ultrasonic properties would help understanding the interpretation of clinical echography in diagnosis of prostate cancer.

In this paper we show the process to perform a formal analysis to identify similarities among models and software engineering standards, adapting the method of similarity between MSSS models. We compared the ISO/IEC 12207 and IEEE 1062 standards, and some of the most important worldwide models such as the CMMI-ACQ, eSCM-CL, PMBOK and PRINCE2. This study focuses on the risk management process from the point of view of software outsourcing. In this paper we present the first phase, which consists of a risk management methodology, to establish the main aspects of risk management for software outsourcing projects. Based on the adaptation of the MSSS, we performed the analysis of the characteristics of the software outsourcing that each standard and method meets, resulting in a series of steps and guidelines to formalize and organize the comparison, and so generate the analysis results.

A growing literature documents the inherently stressful nature of working with persons who are suffering or traumatized, and the potential for the development of stress disorders among social workers and other helpers. Previous studies of compassion fatigue and burnout have provided important information about professional and workplace variables that might influence risk, but little attention has been given to studying intrapersonal skills/abilities that might reduce risk and/or increase resilience and work satisfaction among helping professionals. This exploratory study asked whether levels of mindfulness, empathy, and emotional separation would influence professional quality of life, including compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction. Surveys consisting of demographic questions and four established scales measuring professional quality of life, mindfulness, empathy, and emotional separation were mailed to a random sample of 400 licensed clinical social workers in Kentucky. Data were collected between Mar. 8, 2008, and May 29, 2008, and included 171 usable surveys, a 42% response rate. Data were analyzed using ordinary least squares multiple regression, analysis of variance tests, and Sobel tests of mediation. findings show significant, direct associations of higher mindfulness and emotional separation scores with higher compassion satisfaction scores and lower burnout scores. Higher emotional separation was also directly and significantly associated with lower compassion fatigue, and mediation tests suggested an indirect negative relationship between mindfulness and compassion fatigue as well. The personal distress empathy subscale had a significant, direct, negative association with compassion satisfaction, while empathic concern had a significant, direct, positive association. Social controversy is a sustained, mediated debate between at least two oppositional parties which is more than just a difference of opinion; rather it is a persistent conflict over the political and cultural implications that dominant forms of communicative reasoning, practices, and norms have for a public. Simply put, during social controversies the norms guiding public life can be negotiated, reaffirmed, negated, and/or transformed. This can lead to progressive political, cultural, and/or social change in some instances, while establishing or reifying conservative and even oppressive norms, practices, and laws in others. Building upon Olson and Goodnight's (1994) theoretical and methodological framework of social controversy, this dissertation argues that scholars should analyze the role affect plays in this type of conflict as a means to address the regulation of public conduct as well as public discourse. The rhetorical and argumentative significance of the affective dimensions of social controversy have been conceptualized and analyzed via an examination of emotion-based claims and affective states that have become salient, discernable and/or apprehendable during specific public disagreements. Such a conceptualization demonstrates that critical insights regarding the norms that guide public conduct, the role risk and vulnerability play in the regulation of individuals' public behavior, and the relationship between affect and citizenship can be gained by focusing on a controversy's affective dimensions. To highlight the importance of the study of affect in social controversy as well as better understand the larger critical significance affect theory has for rhetorical and argumentation studies, this dissertation has analyzed the affective dimensions of three conflicts. Africa has been subject to Western misrepresentations since the earliest ventures of Europeans into the continent. The colonial clichés of Africa as the “Dark continent” and its people as lazy, licentious savages incapable of progress have been established to justify Western exploitation of Africa. African women have been particularly subject to the derogatory Western gaze. Most existing studies of the Western media’s representations of Africans suggest that the media continue recycling these colonial stereotypes. The study examined four hundred forty four articles about African women in the New York Times and Le Monde from 1990 to 2005 to determine to what extent their representations continued to be shaped by colonial clichés. The study found that only about half of the portrayals of African women are crisis-driven. The rest of the stories present African women outside crises situations: e.g., going about their daily lives, participating in politics and interested in fashion. The study also demonstrated that Le Monde’s discourses about African women are somewhat more subtle and sophisticated than those of the New York Times, which often relies on simplistic and reductionist interpretations of complex situations. Le Monde’s coverage nevertheless deteriorates when the issues discussed are perceived as having political currency in france. The coverage in both newspapers also suffers from systematic omissions of a larger political and historical context that would better contextualize situations and would also expose france and America’s role in African events. finally, the New York Times’ reporting is distinguished by the trend of advocacy journalism. While the intentions of journalists/advocates are necessarily benevolent, the outcome of these writings is somewhat ambiguous, often projecting African women at their worst: suffering, desperate, and to be pitied.
