Over the past decades, information technology has been impacting industries, economics, the way of life and even the culture throughout the world. Productivity has been attracting much attention as an important indicator of economics, and numerous researchers have investigated the relationship between information technology and productivity. Construction is one of the largest industries in the United States, but little research has been conducted to investigate the relationship between information technology and construction productivity. The major objective of this dissertation is to determine the degree (if any) to which information technology usage, specifically the use of information technology to automate and integrate construction project work functions, is related to construction productivity. first, the author analyzed the relationship between information technology and construction productivity on a national-level basis. Second, the author compared the relationship between information technology’ contribution to value added growth and productivity in the construction industry with other industries. Third, the author performed a series of statistical analyses to investigate the relationship between construction productivity and automation and integration applications at the construction project level. Based on the above results, the author developed a matrix to map the relationship between technology usage on each work function and productivity in the concrete, structural steel, electrical and piping trades. In addition, a technology index developed from technology usage on all of the work functions were used to investigate the general effect of information technology usage on a project level. Considerable research exists on the importance of self-determination in the transition of students with disabilities from high school. Much of this research has focused on conditions in the family that may nurture and support the development of self-determined motivation. These conditions, as described by Self-Determination Theory, include support for autonomy, relatedness and competence. Little data exists, however, on whether the conditions in the family environment associated with self-determination vary depending on students' ethnic backgrounds. Participants consisted of 138 Latino and Anglo students with disabilities enrolled in six high schools within a large urban school district. Self-determination was measured using the Arc Self-Determination Scale (Wehmeyer & Kelchner). Students' perceptions of their family environment were measured using six subscales from the family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos). Latino students scored significantly higher than Anglo students in level of self-determination, but no significant differences were found in perceptions of the family environment between the two groups. Self-determination was regressed on the family environment subscales and no significant effect sizes were obtained for the sample as a whole (R2 = .044, f (6, 129) = .993, p = .433). However, comparisons between Latinos and Anglos on the relationship between perceptions of the family environment and self-determination suggested that family environments associated with Autonomy were more related to levels of self-determination in Anglo than in Latino students. family environments associated with Cohesiveness, Achievement Orientation and Control were more highly related to level of self-determination for Latino than for Anglo students. The study has practical implications for parents and school practitioners when planning for transition and implementing strategies to develop self-determination for students with disabilities.

To provide an alternate explanation for the behavior of African American fathers in their parenting using an Afrocentric model, comparing it with the parenting behavior of the Caucasian father, who would use primarily an Eurocentric model. Using data from the National Survey of family Growth, IV, 2002, a parenting scale was devised using specific parenting behavior that revolved around the type and frequency of interactions that the fathers had with their children, and whether the father was married, was resident with the child, neither, or both. findings of this study uncovered many differences and similarities between the groups, namely, that marriage is a large factor in the parenting behavior of Caucasian fathers and the residential status is a large factor in the parenting behavior of African American fathers.

This research is a qualitative study of the experiences of childfree heterosexual women ages 40 and older. Eight childfree women participated in an in-person semi-structured interview and selected cards from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) were administered. The semi-structured interview was used to explore conscious experiences and the TAT was used to examine the unconscious experiences of the childfree women in this study. Six themes derived from this study: (1) never experiencing a desire for children, (2) taking time to contemplate a childfree lifestyle, (3) possible negative opinions of others do not influence childfree decision, (4) support for the decision, (5) importance of family and (6) no regret. There were also three idiographic themes in this study. The main conclusion derived from this research is that an absence of the desire for motherhood does not indicate the absence of a maternal instinct. Due to the exponentially aging population, it is becoming increasingly necessary to find effective, affordable and easily implemented interventions for successful aging. Informal use of horticultural therapy (HT) as an intervention is increasing with older adults, adding to anecdotal evidence of its positive impact. However, empirical research showing its effectiveness continues to be lacking. This pilot study was conducted with two main goals. The first, was to repeat HT activities used in previous studies to form a structured HT program and the second, to determine the impact of a HT program on well-being, self-esteem, self efficacy and social isolation on a group of community dwelling older adults. A six-week HT program was developed using activities from an unpublished handbook, “Horticultural Therapy and Seniors Using Herbs: A Manual for Recreational Therapists and Master Gardeners” (Relf, P.D., unpublished). HT activities were conducted weekly with three separate groups of community dwelling older adults. Measures of well-being (WHO-5 Well-Being Index), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), self efficacy (Garden Experience Measure) and social isolation (The friendship Scale) were taken before and after the program. Treatment groups were compared to a waitlist control group on all four measures. The resulting analysis showed a statistically significant difference in self-esteem and some aspects of self efficacy of the treatment group over the waitlist control group. In addition, participants’ feedback on their experience of the program proved to be overwhelmingly positive. This HT program meets the criteria of an effective, affordable and easily implemented intervention and will hopefully encourage more use of HT with older adults. A numerical technique is developed to simulate the vortices associated with stationary and flapping wings. The Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations are used over an unstructured grid. The present work assesses the locations of the origins of vortex generation, models those locations and develops a systematic mesh refinement strategy to simulate vortices more accurately using the URANS model. The vortex center plays a key role in the analysis of the simulation data. A novel approach to locating a vortex center is also developed referred to as the Max-Max criterion. Experimental validation of the simulated vortex from a stationary NACA0012 wing is achieved. The tangential velocity along the core of the vortex falls within five percent of the experimental data in the case of the stationary NACA0012 simulation. The wing surface pressure coefficient also matches with the experimental data. The refinement techniques are then focused on unsteady simulations of pitching and dual-mode wing flapping. Tip vortex strength, location, and wing surface pressure are analyzed. Links to vortex behavior and wing motion are inferred. Many have used the principles of statistics and Bayesian decision theory to model specific learning problems. It is less common to see models of the processes of learning in general. One exception is the model of the supervised learning process known as the “Extended Bayesian formalism” or EBf. This model is descriptive, in that it can describe and compare learning algorithms. Thus the EBf is capable of modeling both effective and ineffective learning algorithms. We extend the EBf to model un-supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, supervised learning, and empirical function optimization. We also generalize the utility model of the EBf to deal with non-deterministic outcomes, and with utility functions other than 0-1 loss. finally, we modify the EBf to create a “prescriptive” learning model, meaning that, instead of describing existing algorithms, our model defines how learning should optimally take place. We call the resulting model the Unified Bayesian Decision Theoretical Model, or the UBDTM. WE show that this model can serve as a cohesive theory and framework in which a broad range of questions can be analyzed and studied. Such a broadly applicable unified theoretical framework is one of the major missing ingredients of machine learning theory. Using the UBDTM, we concentrate on supervised learning and empirical function optimization. We then use the UBDTM to reanalyze many important theoretical issues in Machine Learning, including No-free-Lunch, utility implications, and active learning. We also point forward to future directions for using the UBDTM to model learnability, sample complexity, and ensembles. We also provide practical applications of the UBDTM by using the model to train a Bayesian variation to the CMAC supervised learner in closed form, to perform a practical empirical function optimization task, and as part of the guiding principles behind an ongoing project to create an electronic and print corpus of tagged ancient Syriac texts using act

This dissertation is a cross-cultural study of ministry students at select Church of Christ schools in the United States, Panama, India, and Nigeria who are preparing for ministries related to the teaching of the Word of God (the Bible). The researcher developed a two page survey to be administered to participants. The instrument was reviewed by an expert panel and pilot tested in three countries: United States, Ukraine, and India. The final survey consisted of eight demographic questions and a listing of twenty-nine factors for participants to choose. Participants were then asked to rank the top five factors, in order of influence on their decision to enter ministries related to teaching Scripture. The survey was sent via email to a total of 31 schools in the four countries (15 in the U.S., 2 in Panama, 7 in India, 7 in Nigeria). Twenty schools participated in the study by the researcher's deadline (11 in the U.S., 2 in Panama, 2 in India, 5 in Nigeria). A total of 523 students filled out the survey (304 in U.S., 19 in Panama, 101 in India, 99 in Nigeria). Student responses were recorded on an Excel spreadsheet and then analyzed using SPSS. The researcher analyzed the findings in terms of three research questions. The focus of the research and the questions was on the frequency at which factors were identified by students, the ranking of the top factors by the students, and analysis of the difference between those rankings. factors were ranked by frequency for the group and for each individual country to answer the first research question. In regards to the second research question, factors were ranked on an additive scale based on how they were ranked among the top 5 by participants. The third question focused on differences in mean ranks. Kruskal-Wallis H testing was applied to the mean ranks of each factor ranked by the students. factors with a significance below .05 were declared to be significantly different among the groups. In this mixed methods study, the impact of gentrification on PreK-12 public school student diversity in a suburban jurisdiction in the mid-Atlantic United States was investigated. The motivation for the study was the perception that the redevelopment of garden apartment complexes (older, multifamily-housing complexes of four stories or less) resulted in the displacement of enrolled students of color. Using geographic information systems (GIS) technology to analyze redevelopment and student enrollment data yielded statistically significant correlations at the Census block group level. Block groups that experienced high amounts of garden apartment redevelopment also saw significant reductions in the total number of students and the number of non-White students over a 4-year period. A survey of 93 housing advocates, staff, and garden apartment residents revealed perceptions of gentrification in the study area, the perceived effects on student diversity, and attitudes toward potential advocacy in the realms of housing and student diversity on the part of the school system or County. Results showed that participants believed that gentrification was occurring in the study area. However, there were significant differences among groups as to whether gentrification was seen as a positive or negative phenomenon. Additionally, results suggested that participants saw a role for school systems in advocating for students in the areas of diversity and housing, realms not traditionally associated with education. Recommendations for practice and suggestions for further research are also presented. Generation Y is the largest generation in the workplace since the Baby Boomer generation. Due to the birth rate decline of Generation X and the reality that Baby Boomers are approaching retirement age, previous literature demonstrates a greater need to hire and retain Generation Y employees. Researchers posit that the loyalty of Generation Y tends to lie in engaging genuine leaders willing to give frequent and detailed feedback, and participate in a 'parent-like' mentoring relationship with Baby Boomer or Traditionalist co-workers. Other theories show, Generation Y tends to look for enjoyably meaningful work and relationships with co-workers, which would assume that those leaders who are able to foster meaningful work relationships, and proactively answer, are the ones most likely to retain Generation Y employees. The focus of this study is to define quantify the leadership characteristics preferred by each generation. The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Project research survey by Robert House et al. (2004), determined the statistical relationships between charismatic or value based, team orientated, self protective, humane oriented, participative, and autonomous leadership characteristics, in addition to their 21 subscales, when controlling for generational cohort, gender, and ethnicity. The differences between generation and preferred GLOBE Leadership dimensions and subscales were determined by Kruskal-Wallis H Chi-Squared; Mann Whitney U; and Wilcoxon W tests.
