A.f. Pollard is now better remembered for founding the Institute of Historical Research than he is for his scholarship. In his heyday, however, Pollard was a formidable and prolific historian, primarily of parliament and the Tudor period. Pollard has been characterised both as a modernist and as a whig historian. Rejecting romantic invocations of liberty, he extolled instead the sovereign nation state, pinpointing the 16th century as the moment when it was achieved. Pollard rejected anachronistic accounts of parliament's development: for him, the assembly had grown by accident (out of the medieval king's council), rather than by design. This adaptability had ensured parliament's longevity and would preserve it into the future. Pollard revered the English parliament all the more for its embodiment of this national good fortune. Pollard helped to professionalise the discipline of history, but his own writings could be found wanting when measured against the standards that he had advocated. Criticism of his approach and assumptions comes easily now. Yet, upon reacquaintance, historians of parliament may find enduring interest in Pollard's shrewd and extensive work.

five undescribed alpha-pyrone derivatives, named neuropyrones A-E, were isolated from the endophytic fungus Neurospora dictyophora WZ-497 derived from the stems of Aster tataricus L. f. The structures of these alpha-pyrones with absolute configurations were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and computational calculations. All isolated compounds were tested for various bioactivities, including tyrosinase inhibitory ac-tivity. The results showed that neuropyrones A-C displayed potent inhibitory effects on tyrosinase with IC50 values of 0.38 +/- 0.07, 0.49 +/- 0.06, and 0.12 +/- 0.01 mM, respectively, which were comparable to that of the positive control, kojic acid (IC50 = 0.14 +/- 0.021 mM). A molecular docking study revealed the interaction be-tween 3 and the His263, His85, Val283, Asn260, Phe264, and Val248 residues of tyrosinase.

Background Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f. (TwHf), a traditional Chinese medicine, is widely used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Due to multiorgan toxicity, particularly hepatotoxicity, the application of TwHf is restricted. To clarify the hepatotoxic substances, zebrafish, hepatocytes and macrophages were used for screening based on hepatotoxic injury patterns. This study provides a basis for further elucidation of the hepatotoxic mechanism of *** first, 12 compounds were selected according to the chemical categories of TwHf. The fluorescence area and fluorescence intensity of zebrafish livers were observed and calculated. The viability of two hepatocyte lines was detected by CCK8 assay. TNf-alpha and IL-1 beta mRNA expression in bone marrow-derived macrophages was used to evaluate macrophage activation, a factor of potential indirect hepatotoxicity. finally, the hepatotoxic characteristics of 4 representative components were verified in mice in *** Parthenolide, triptolide, triptonide, triptobenzene H, celastrol, demethylzeylasteral, wilforlide A, triptotriterpenic acid A and regelidine significantly reduced the fluorescence area and fluorescence intensity of zebrafish livers. The viability of L-02 or AML-12 cells was significantly inhibited by parthenolide, triptolide, triptonide, celastrol, demethylzeylasteral, and triptotriterpenic acid A. Parthenolide, triptolide, triptonide, celastrol, demethylzeylasteral and triptobenzene H significantly increased TNf-alpha and IL-1 beta mRNA levels in macrophages, while triptophenolide, hypodiolide and wilforine significantly reduced TNf-alpha and IL-1 beta mRNA levels. Triptotriterpenic acid A, celastrol and triptobenzene H at a dose of 10 mg/kg significantly increased the levels of mouse serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase and aggravated liver *** Parthenolide, triptolide, triptonide, celastrol, demethylzeylasteral, triptotriterpenic acid A and tr

The article discusses the morality of W. B. Yeats' sonnet Leda and the Swan in the context of a widening gap between the sexual mores of earlier times and our own, and whether the poem remains a suitable choice for the teaching of stylistics. I begin by examining stylistics treatments of the poem, and its political, social and artistic context, then move on to consider charges of misogyny against the poem for eroticising and failing to condemn the rape it depicts. To assess these charges I examine other literary uses of the Leda myth both before and after Yeats, including earlier poems which romanticise the rape, and later ones which vilify it. I also consider the implications of my discussion for the teaching of other canonical poems on similar themes. The last part of the paper discusses more generally the place of morality in literature and literature teaching, including stylistics: whether teachers and analysts should promote a moral world view and moral behaviour through their choice of texts and comments on them, or whether there are other valid criteria for selecting and describing a text such as Leda and the Swan. To elucidate current views, I draw parallels with the moral didacticism of the highly influential literary critic f. R. Leavis in the mid twentieth century, and ask whether aspects of his patrician view have undergone a surreptitious revival in some contemporary pedagogy and criticism at the beginning of the twenty first.

fusarium ear rot is an important disease of maize and requires several fungicide treatments to achieve satisfactory control in China. The extensive use of common fungicides to control this disease has caused fungicides resistance of pathogens. In this study, we tested the effect of different commercial fungicides on mycelial growth offusarium graminearum and fusarium oxysporum isolates collected from different fields in the Jilin Province of China in 2014. The effect of concentration on mycelial growth varied significantly (p < 0.05) between tested commercial fungicides. Our results showed that among the 10 tested commercial fungicides, prochloraz and polyoxin-D highly reduced the mycelial growth offusarium graminearum by 3.4 cm and 4.1 cm, respectively as compared to other fungicides at a concentration of 0.1 mg/L. Moreover, a 0.1 mg/L concentration of polyoxin-D, tebuconazole, fosetyl-Al, fludioxonil, azoxystrobin, and carbendazim were also highly effective to decrease the mycelial growth offusarium oxysporum with 3.1 cm, 3.1 cm, 3.4 cm, 3.8 cm, and 4.4 cm as compared to other fungicides at the same concentration. These results will provide useful information to select suitable fungicides for management and control of maize ear rot disease caused by fusarium graminearum and fusarium oxysporum and further increase our understanding of the effects of different fungicides concentrations on fusarium graminearum and fusarium oxysporum.

Studies have shown that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) screening and diagnostic instruments may be affected by the presence of emotional and behavior problems (EBPs). This study assessed the impact of EBPs on the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with follow-up (M-CHAT-R/f). Participants included 290 children, 18-48 months of age, referred for ASD-related concerns. Those diagnosed with ASD had significantly lower externalizing EBPs compared to those who were not diagnosed with ASD. More externalizing symptoms and younger age were significantly predictive of an M-CHAT-R/ffinal score. Sensitivity and specificity was impacted by the age of the child. These results suggest that combining measures that assess EBPs and autism core symptoms may improve accuracy in this referred population.

The 1933 Mock Trial of Economists is occasionally noticed and then interpreted as a representation of popular discontent with the economists' "crime" of "conspiracy to spread mental fog." William Beveridge's papers in the London School of Economics archives contain the written record of the performed composition and an unperformed frame for the Trial. Both are reproduced below. The performance singles out J. M. Keynes for his changing points of view. The unperformed frame provides evidence of Beveridge's defense of diverse viewpoints in light of his worries about totalitarian repression. Long after he had left LSE, f. A. Hayek called attention to Beveridge's worries about the fate of multiple viewpoints under socialism.

This article proposes the concept of vampiric love as love of the dreaded thing. Through an analysis off.W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, I show how vampiric love is love turned back on itself to threaten the communal bond with its own excess. Through an act of sacrifice, catastrophe is averted and the community saved in leaping from dread to love. Drawing on Derrida's idea of autoimmunization as well as Hagglund's idea of secular love, the article examines vampiric love as an autoimmunization of the biopolitical community - an attack upon itself - that exposes the communal organism to death and chance as salvation from dread. The autoimmune process is traced back to Romantic yearning for impossibly lost love and its flipside in Gothic dread in Polidori's 1819 short story The Vampyre , where the outlines of the autoimmune process can be clearly seen. Employing Kierkegaard's concept of dread, I undertake an analysis of the sacrificial logic at work in Nosferatu, where dread must be passed through in an awakening of the spirit to possibility;a process enfolded into the performativity of the film itself in an autoimmune attack on its own formal system.
