We prove that if p r and p r − 1 are both prime powers then there is a generalized Hadamard matrix of order p r ( p r − 1) with elements from the elementary abelian group Z p x⋯x Z p . This result was motivated by results of Rajkundia on BIBD's. This result is then used to produce p r − 1 mutually orthogonal f -squares f ( p r ( p r − 1); p r − 1).

Satellite DNA of 3 spp. of higher plants, runner bean (Phaseolus coccinesu), black mustard (Brassica nigra) and lemon (Citrus limon) were isolated by preparative ultracentrifugation in CsCl density gradients. Differential melting curves of satellite DNA show gross heterogeneity. Satellite DNA of analyzed plants contain fast and slow renaturing fractions. The amount and kinetic complexities of these fractions varied between the satellites. Calculations carried out on the basis of the values of Tm and buoyant density in CsCl gradients demonstrated that lemon and bean satellite DNA were enriched in 5-methylcytosine. In the lemon satellite DNA it amounted to 24.1%. By the distribution of plant satellite DNA in actinomycin D-CsCl and Hg2+-CsSO4 density gradients several components were observed.

Chlorophyll-protein complexes from thylakoids of Sinapis alba plants were separated using Tris- HCl and Tris-borate buffer in the sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. In the electrophoretogram with Tris-borate buffer, 6 bands were characterized in the gel pattern. The 3 major green zones (P-700 chlorophyll a-protein, light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein, free pigment zone), observed in experiments with the Tris-HCl buffer, and 3 further bands (light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein, light-harvesting chlorophyll protein 2, and chlorophyll a-protein) were electrophoretically separated. An elongation of the electrophoretical period caused a decrease of the proportion of the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein;the free pigment increased by a comparable proportion. The different techniques for the determination of the chlorophyll contents and the chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratios of the green gel bands were compared. The analysis of the densitometric tracings by standard curves was the most suitable method. Bands migrating closely together were easily characterized by this method although a separation by elution was impossible. The absorption coefficients of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b were determined for the separated chlorophyll-proteins at 671 and 653 nm. A forumula was developed by which the chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio may be caclulated by the absorbance in the densitometric tracing peaks.

By the method of second quantization we construct an infinite-dimensional graded module for the centralizer of an involution of the fischer-Griess "Monster" simple group f(1) so that the Thompson series are those conjectured by Conway and Norton. As a consequence we obtain some identities and congruences relating modular functions j and eta. We are hopeful that this representation can be extended to the whole group f(1), proving all the conjectures by Conway and Norton in their recent paper [Conway, J. H. & Norton, S. P. (1979) Bull. London Math. Soc. 11, 308-339].

A simple technique of purification of the soluble pig heart mitochondrial f1-ATPase is described. It consists of removal of extrinsic proteins from mitochondrial membranes before extraction with chloroform and ammonium sulfate fractionation. A high degree of purity, an excellent stability and a good yield are attained after gel filtration through an Ultrogel ACA 34 column equilibrated in the presence of 50% glycerol. The tested properties of the f1-ATPase prepared by this method are similar to those of the same enzyme extracted by sonication. The enzyme is virtually devoid of tightly bound nucleotides. Some characteristics of the behavior of the .beta. subunit are shown.
