Effect of falcaria vulgaris on oxidative damage of liver in diabetic rats

BackgroundOxidative stress is strongly associated with development of diabetes mellitus. f. vulgaris, contains antioxidant ingredients. This study was designed in order to evaluate the effect of f. vulgaris on the damaged liver in diabetic *** this study, hydroalcoholic extract of f. vulgaris was prepared. Sixty four male rats were divided into 8 groups (n=8), including saline (normal control), streptozotocin (STZ) (diabetic control) (60mg/kg), f. vulgaris (50, 100, 150mg/kg), and STZ plus f. vulgaris (50, 100, 150mg/kg) were administered through oral gavage on treated group once a day for 28 consecutive days. Serum nitrite oxide (NO) level, ferric reducing/antioxidant power (fRAP), Malondialdehyde (MDA), liver weight, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), diameter of hepatocytes and central hepatic vein have been examined. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and the post hoc *** outcomes showed that administrating streptozotocin enhanced liver MDA, nitrite oxide, the mean diameter of central hepatic vein and hepatocyte, liver enzymes significantly and reduced liver weight compared to saline group (P<0.05). Though, administrating f. vulgaris and f. vulgaris plus STZ enhanced liver weight and tissue fRAP level significantly and reduced liver enzymes, NO levels, liver MDA, the mean diameter of hepatocyte and central hepatic vein in entire doses were equal to STZ group (P<0.05).ConclusionIt seems that, were equal f. vulgaris might recover liver injuries in diabetic rats.

Social and scientific disorder as epistemic phenomena, or the consequences of government dietary guidelines

We begin with a process-oriented model of science according to which signals concerning scientific reputation serve both to coordinate the plans of individuals in the scientific domain and to ensure that the knowledge that emerges from interactions between scientists and the environment is reliable. Under normal circumstances, scientific order emerges from the publication-citation-reputation (PCR) process of science. We adopt and extend f. A. Hayek's epistemology according to which knowledge affords successful plan-based action and we employ this in the development of an epistemic theory of social order. We propose that external interferences with the PCR process have distorting effects on scientific knowledge and, thus, on scientific and social order more broadly. We support this claim by describing the history of the US federal government's development of standardized dietary guidelines for American consumers and its concomitant interference in the PCR process of nutritional science. We conclude that this interference contributed to social disorder in dietary science and beyond.

The eastern Mediterranean Sea lies under the influence of high-and low-latitude climatic systems. The northern part of the basin is affected by Atlantic depressions and continental and polar air masses that promote inter-mediate and deep-water formation. The southern part is influenced by subtropical conditions and monsoon activity. Monsoon intensification results in enhanced freshwater discharge from the Nile River and other (now dry) systems along the North African margin. This freshwater influx into the Mediterranean Sea reduces surface water buoyancy loss. Disentangling the influences of these diverse climatic forcings is hindered by inherent proxy data limitations and by interactions between the climatic forcings. Here we use a wealth of published and new paleoclimate records across Termination II to understand the impacts of the higher latitude and subtropical/ monsoon climate influences on coccolithophore ecology and holococcolith preservation in Aegean Sea sediment core LC21. We then use these findings to interpret coccolith assemblage variations at Ocean Drilling Program Site 967 (located nearby LC21, at the Eratosthenes Seamount) during multiple glacial-interglacial cycles across the Middle Pleistocene (marine isotopic stages 14-9). The LC21 analysis suggests that holococcolith preservation was enhanced during Heinrich Stadial 11 (-133 ka) and cold spell C26 (-119 ka). These two events have been previously linked to cold conditions in the North Atlantic and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation weakening. We propose that associated atmospheric perturbations over the Mediterranean Sea promoted deep -water formation, and thus holococcolith preservation. Similarly, in the Middle Pleistocene (MIS 14-9) of Site 967, we observe temporal coincidence between ten episodes of enhanced holococcolith preservation and episodes of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slowdown. Purpose The role of discipline in achieving higher academic and workplace performance is receiving increasing attention;however, research into student discipline has historically centred on schools. The purpose of this paper is to explore how university students from multiple faculties and at different stages of academic progression understand discipline in higher education, with the aim to investigate how graduates could become more disciplined and more work ready. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a qualitative exploratory approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with university students and analysed using thematic analysis. findings The students viewed discipline as internally driven as opposed to being enforced externally, which is often the case in schools. five main themes were identified as discipline dimensions: "focus", "intention", "responsibility", "structure" and "time" (f.I.R.S.T.). Originality/value A new concept of discipline is presented, underpinned by a conceptual framework comprised of self-determination, goal-setting, self-efficacy, self-regulation and time management principles. A "Threshold Concept of Discipline", a hierarchical four-layered concept that develops over time for every individual with the ultimate level being "Creative Discipline", is proposed. These findings illuminate learning strategies that higher education institutions can use to further enhance learning and increase the work readiness of their graduates. Such strategies can empower students who aspire to perform at a higher level and to become true professionals.

Hegel and Sellars on the Unity of Things

I have claimed previously that Hegel and Sellars are both, in the end, monistic visionaries, though with radically different visions of the grand unity of things. In this paper I explain and defend that claim. Section one differentiates several kinds of monism;section two discusses Hegel's vision of the underlying unity of thing, while section three does the same for Sellars. The compare-and-contrast assignment is brought to completion in section four.

Hospitality brand management is a primary concern in the hotel industry and the evaluation of brands can be considered as a decision-making problem with multiple criteria. The evaluation information of brands may be uncertain sometimes. The q-rung orthopair fuzzy set (q-R.O.f.S.), which represents the preference degree of a person from the positive and negative aspects, has turned out to be an efficient tool in depicting uncertainty and vagueness in the decision-making process. This article dedicates to presenting an integrated multiple criteria decision-making method with q-R.O.f.S.. firstly, a score function of the q-R.O.f.S. is proposed to solve the deficiencies of two existing score functions. Then, a weight-determining method based on the additive consistency of the preference relation is developed. A decision-making method integrating the score function, the best worst method and the VIsekriterijumska optimizacija I KOmpromisno Resenje (V.I.K.O.R.) which means multiple criteria compromise optimisation in English) method is further proposed. finally, a case study regarding the hospitality brand management is provided to show the applicability and validity of the proposed method.

Room temperature plasma hydrogenation – An effective way to suppress defects in ZnO nanorods

The densely packed, perpendicularly oriented ZnO nanorods were hydrothermally grown in dark and under UV irradiation on fused silica glass substrates seeded by ZnO nanocrystals. The exciton-related UV photoluminescence observed at room temperature at 380 nm increased significantly after a room temperature hydrogen plasma treatment in a negatively self-biased capacitive coupled radio frequency reactor whereas the defect-related yellow photoluminescence was noticeably reduced together with the f + electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal g  = 1.96. Thus, the f + EPR signals are surface type defects which amount is governed by the surface plasma treatment. The correlation between PL and EPR signals observed in ZnO nanorods exposed to the same treatment relates some optically active defects to paramagnetic centers.

Recent literature reports higher single stock options (SSO) volume before earnings announcements (EA). There are no studies that explore single stock futures (SSf) in this context because of illiquid SSf markets in developed countries. Similar to SSO, SSf provide embedded leverage and facilitate short selling although at a lower cost, but do not provide downside-risk protection. India's liquid SSO and SSf provide a unique setting to study the preference of informed traders. We observe an increase in both SSO and SSf volume before EA. further, SSf dominate SSO possibly due to SSO becoming expensive before EA and higher information leakage in India.

Strawson, Shoemaker, and the Hubris of Theories

David Shoemaker's Responsibility from the Margins is chock full of valuable insights on the nature of our responsibility, and it has more in common with P.f. Strawson's approach in "freedom and Resentment" than the accounts of most philosophers who call themselves Strawsonians. On one central issue of interpretation, however, Shoemaker gets Strawson wrong. Like many interpreters, Shoemaker sees Strawson as defending a "quality of will" theory of responsibility. This idea fundamentally misunderstands Strawson's aims in "freedom and Resentment." Strawson does not defend a theory of any kind in that essay. On the contrary, Strawson tries to caution his fellow philosophers away from the theorizing impulse. The urge to develop comprehensive theories, he argued, inevitably leads philosophers away from the natural facts about responsibility and the related emotions. So, Strawson offers an alternative way of understanding responsibility, one that takes the facts into account "in all their bearings." This interpretive disagreement is instructive, I'll argue, because it illuminates several weaknesses in Shoemaker's own "tripartite" theory of responsibility. Where his account goes astray can be remedied in large part by embracing the spirit of Strawson's approach in full.

Introduction Trabeculae carneae are irregular structures that cover the endocardial surfaces of both ventricles of human heart and account for a significant portion of the ventricular ***,the role of trabeculae carneae in left ventricular(LV)function is not well *** reports suggested that trabeculae help squeeze blood from the apical region during systole[1].Our recent study suggests that trabeculae carneae hypertrophy and fibrosis contribute to increased LV stiffness in patients with diastolic heart failure,and severing free-running trabeculae carneae may improve diastolic compliance of the LV[2].Objective To understand the role of trabeculae carneae in the left ventricular diastolic and systolic functions using anatomically detailed patient-specific finite element models of the human ***(1)Image acquisition An explanted human heart was collected from a 63 year old female donor with a history of stroke and congestive heart failure within 24 hours postmortem from South Texas Blood and Tissue Center(San Antonio,TX).The heart was de-identified in accordance with Institutional Review Board(IRB)requirements and informed consent for research was obtained from the donor’s ***-dimensional MRI scanning was conducted on a 3T(128 MHz)MRI system(TIM Trio,Siemens Medical Solutions),comprised of a superconducting magnet with a 60 cm diameter accessible bore,when the heart was submerged in a saline filled plastic container.(2)finite element analysis Three distinct LV models were derived from the MR *** first model was the intact trabeculated model(TM)which contained all trabeculae carneae and papillary *** high-resolution anatomically detailed 3D model of the LV was segmented from 2D MR images in DICOM format using Mimics(Materialise NV,Leuven,Belgium).The second model was the papillary model(PM),in which the papillary muscles remain intact but most of the trabeculae carneae were excluded in the smoothing *** third
