The Chinese capital market is characterized by high segmentation due to governmental regulations. In this thesis I investigate both the causes and consequences of this market segmentations. Specifically, I address the following questions: (1) to which degree this capital market segmentation is caused by the fragmented regulations in China, (2) what are the key characteristics of this market segmentation, and (3) what are the impacts of this market segmentation on capital costs and resources allocations. Answers to these questions can have important implications for Chinese policy makers to improve capital market regulatory coordination and efficiency. I organize this thesis as follows. first, I define the concepts of capital market segmentation and fragmented regulation based on literature reviews and theoretical analysis. Next, on the basis of existing theories and methods in finance and economics, I select a number of indicators to systematically measure the degree of regulatory segmentation in China’s capital market. I then develop an econometric model of capital market frontier efficiency analysis to calculate and analyze China’s capital market segmentation and regulatory fragmentation. Lastly, I use the production function analysis technique and the even study method to examine the impacts of fragmented regulatory segmentation on the connections and price distortions in the equity, debt, and insurance markets. findings of this thesis enhance the understanding of how institutional forces such as governmental regulations influence the function and efficiency of the capital markets.

This dissertation studies how financial market volatility or uncertainty in the U.S. economy affects real economic activity both in the U.S. and other open economies. Chapter 1 critically examines a stylized fact about the effects of uncertainty shocks on the U.S. economy. A link between uncertainty and firms' investment, hiring, and production decisions has drawn much attention in contemporary discussions after the 2008 financial crisis. Bloom (2009) showed that uncertainty events, identified by spikes in stock market volatility, triggered immediate falls in output and employment, followed by rapid rebounds. I show that such stock market volatility shocks failed to produce this same pattern of responses after 1983. Chapter 2 studies the effects of risk aversion shocks, measured by increases in the VIX , on emerging market economies (EMEs). By estimating a structural vector autoregression (VAR) model, I find that, although risk aversion shocks do not have much impact on U.S. output, they do have a noticeable impact on the output of EMEs. To explain the contrast between the impact of risk appetite shocks on EMEs and the impact on the U.S. economy, a credit channel is proposed as a propagation mechanism. In the model, an increase in the VIX is translated to a risk-aversion shock that generates a "flight to quality." As international investors pull their money from EMEs, borrowing costs increase and domestic credit falls as a consequence of credit market imperfections. Higher borrowing costs, in turn, lead to a fall in investment that causes a real depreciation and a decline in total output through sectoral linkages. finally, Chapter 3, which is co-authored with Prakash Loungani, studies the effect of uncertainty shocks on unemployment dynamics by separating out the role of aggregate and sectoral channels. This dissertation focuses on two main research questions related to the effect of a factor in a local labor market. Both relate to a finding of Black et al. (2014) that married women are less likely to work in Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with more traffic congestion. The first essay evaluates the appropriateness of an MSA as a geographical entity in estimating the effect of congestion on labor supply of married women. One concern with such aggregated data is that they do not take into account within-city variation in congestion. In order to address this issue, I replicate the works by Black et al. (2014) at smaller geographical levels. Once the coefficient on commute time at each level is estimated, I compare the coefficients from smaller geographical entities with one from the MSA to examine if they are statistically similar. I find that an MSA is a geographically proper unity when the effect of commute time on the LfP of married women is examined. Additionally, I explore whether commuting time has also a significant effect on other related to labor market issues. first, I find longer commuting time is associated with shorter weekly working time of high school educated women. Secondly, fewer married women are self-employed in the area with longer commuting time.

Sex offender legislation is designed to make communities feel safer,with little or no empirical data utilized in the law's creation. The existing research indicates that rates of rapes have decreased since major sex offender legislation was developed and implemented. However,the research has also demonstrated that no significant effect occurred regarding recidivism rates following the passage of sex offender legislation.

Human trafficking, domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST), and commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) are complex and multifaceted occurrences in the United States. As the numbers of youth ensnared in sexually exploitive situations increase, organizations and communities are called upon to address the ramifications of this abuse; little research was located, however, that examined collaborative networks and partnerships that address victim identification and mitigation of DMST and CSEC. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to determine whether strategic partnerships existed within the community under investigation. The theoretical framework was environmental theory, as first described by florence Nightingale; the conceptual framework was centered on collaborative networks. Research questions focused on victim identification and organizational strategies for collaboration and mitigation of sex trafficking. The research population was composed of 8 individuals working in organizations in a metropolitan area on the West Coast that served victims of DMST and CSEC. Data obtained from interviews were coded, compared, and analyzed for major and emergent themes. findings indicated that, in the effort to identify victims, these 8 individuals needed to consider all children involved in prostitution as victims and not criminals. further, their efforts toward mitigation needed to center on widespread education across the broader social spectrum of the issues with DMST and CSEC. These workers identified strategies identified to address DMST and CSEC included the "5 Ps": prevention, protection, prosecution, partnership, and policy. These findings may inform organizations and policy makers about how to make informed decisions about the needs and challenges of addressing sexually exploited youth.

This study focuses on acquiring a better understanding of violent offending behavior by examining the personality traits and characteristics,psychological functioning,and personal experiences of individuals who are serving time in prison for at least one violent offense. This study uses the MMPI-2-Rf and seeks to determine if violent offenders will produce profiles consistent with previous research using the MMPI-2. Participants include male and female offenders incarcerated in medium and maximum-security state prisons within the mid-western region of the United States. Each participant was administered the MMPI-2-Rf and a thorough survey asking questions related to the offenders' life. Results yielded some consistent and some contrasting findings on MMPI-2-Rf scales. Other interesting common personality traits and risk factors were identified,including employment status,substance abuse,history of victimization,and history of witnessed violence. It is hoped that results from this study can be used to better improve community and correctional programming and services,and to increase awareness regarding the impact of the cycle of violence.

International technology diffusion reflects global R&D production and collaboration that increasingly accompany other forms of international activity such as trade and foreign direct investment. This thesis studies country-level market flows of disembodied technology or intangibles trade. The main conceptual premise is that operations of MNC subsidiaries have a substantial effect on these market-based flows,consistent with public goods aspects of industrial knowledge and with theories on MNC R&D strategies. Extensive previous country-level work relating fDI and technology flows focuses largely on knowledge spillovers (benefits from involuntary,uncompensated knowledge flows). further,this study considers simultaneously two types of MNC subsidiaries (foreign owned subsidiaries and overseas subsidiaries of domestic MNCs) to acknowledge the likely role of two-way fDI (measured by MNC activities) in intangibles trade. In turn,the influence of these subsidiary groupings on intangibles trade reflects varied motives of the underlying R&D investments. The predicted effects of MNC operations on intangibles trade result in hypotheses that are tested with published aggregate statistics from the U.S. balance of payments on total U.S. exports and imports in R&D services as the dependent variables. Theoretically,the thesis introduces the concept of reverse knowledge transfer from international business research to the study of bilateral intangibles trade. More generally,the thesis contributes to the literature by integrating macro and micro perspectives useful to understand the direction and nature of disembodied technology flows. In particular,the conceptual approach is consistent with macro trade models (two-way trade and two-way fDI from new trade theory),international business research,knowledge-based and transaction costs theories of MNCs (internalization of knowledge production and transfer),and innovation theory (knowledge seeking/exploiting). This dissertation research investigates the experience of deafness among deaf youth, adults, and their families in Mexico City, Mexico. Deaf children cannot fully access the spoken languages of their hearing families and mainstream society. Hence, participating families embarked upon extensive treatment-seeking pilgrimages, encountering myths about deaf lifeways and the promise of miracle cures that formed Mexico City's cultural system for coping with childhood deafness. This ethnography uncovers persistent misconceptions in medical and mainstream discourse, including strong recommendations against exposure to sign language, which directly impacted participants' access to relevant communities of practice, the social networks that proved most significant to these families. I used visual data collection methods, including photovoice and personal history timelines, to examine deaf identity. I contrast participants' lived experiences with the effects of the medicalization of deafness to empirically demonstrate the value of sign-based communities of practice for language socialization and the impact of restricted information and stigma. My research outlines the limitations of therapeutic approaches to language and challenges the notion that all children predictably acquire language. My contribution of "treatment-seeking pilgrimages" provides a new concept for examining therapy management as a social practice and I use "ad hoc communities of practice" to illustrate how participants formed social groupings in response to the unanticipated discovery of deafness in their families. Applied outcomes include recommendations suitable for educating medical personnel, public policy actors, educators, and families in early stages of treatment seeking.

目的探讨血清总前列腺特异性抗原(T-PSA)、游离前列腺特异性抗原(f-PSA)和f-PSA/T-PSA比值(f/T)对前列腺癌(PCa)和良性前列腺增生(BPH)的诊断和临床意义。方法应用美国ACCESS2全自动化学发光免疫分析仪检测经临床病理确诊的16例PCa、84例BPH患者血清T-PSA、f-PSA,并计算f/T。结果 16例PCa组和84例BPH组T-PSA、f-PSA及f/T比值差异均有统计学意义,而处于灰区的5例PCa组患者和19例BPH组患者,其T-PSA、f-PSA结果的差异无统计学意义,但f/T比值的差异有统计学意义。结论通过f/T的测定可以有效区分PCa和BPH,特别对于处于诊断灰区的前列腺患者。联合检测T-PSA、f-PSA和f/T可提高检出率,将为PCa的早期诊断和早期治疗提供重要依据。

The proportion of girls involved in the juvenile justice system has increased in recent years. This increase has prompted juvenile courts to develop more gender-specific services for young women entering the system to meet their unique needs as well as reduce recidivism. National statistics indicated that 21 percent of adjudicated females receive out-of-home placement as part of their treatment. The present study examined data from a mid-sized juvenile county court to determine the effects of the group home intervention for girls. The study compared group home girls to girls who did not receive group home treatment. Using two different propensity score matching (PSM) models, girls were compared on re-offense outcomes. The criminogenic risk level of girls was measured using the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) at intake and recidivism data were collected two years following release from the program. After employing the propensity score match models, mixed results were revealed. The first model revealed that the group home intervention significantly reduced recidivism rates for the treatment group two years following their program exit compared to similar girls who did not receive the intervention. This same effect was not found for the second propensity score model. The second model revealed that girls who received group home treatment did not significantly differ from the matched control in regard to recidivism within both one- and two-year follow-up periods. These findings have both substantive implications for gender-responsive programming and methodological implications for the use of propensity score matching for community-based program evaluation. Additional policy and practice implications for gender-responsive services as well as future directions for research are discussed.
