The genus flourensia, present throughout most of the Americas has been identified as a source of renewable chemicals. Here, we characterized the aerial biomass and matrix polysaccharides offlourensia campestris, f. oolepis and f. riparia, and explored their potential as a source of chemicals through the study of two techniques: analytical pyrolysis (PY-GC/MS) and vacuum pyrolysis (VP). In all species, hemicellulose was more abundant than cellulose and lignin, with galacturonic acid being the most abundant monosaccharide. Bio-oils from VP exhibited a complex combination of phenols, terpenes, furans and nitrogen-containing compounds which have a wide range of industrial applications. Differences between the composition of VP pyrolytic oils derived from the mixture of leaves and stems or from individual organs suggest possible interactions between biopolymers. Combining PY-GC/MS and principal component analysis (PCA) we identified fingerprints for leaves and stems of the three flourensia species.

Herbart and Hegel were contemporaries and both became famous, in their time and thereafter. It would be interesting therefore to know what they thought of one another. We could easily answer this question if they reviewed one another. Hegel never reviewed Herbart;but Herbart did review Hegel. Though in his later years Herbart protested that he did not want to engage with Hegel, he had already written, in 1822, one of his longest and most important reviews, which was of Hegel's Philosophie des Rechts. Herbart maintained that there is a Spinozistic element to Hegel's political philosophy which equates right with might. Hegel tried to avoid the implications of this equation by bringing Kantian transcendental freedom into his system, which for him boiled down to the idea of dialectical development. But Herbart rejected the fundamental idea behind dialectical development: that the ego posits the opposite of itself. Herbart then criticized Hegel's attempt to revive natural law and his theory of the state. Herbart contended that reason cannot prove the fundamental principles of natural law, that reason by itself is an abstract and formal power and as such cannot demonstrate any principle having substantive content. And Herbart criticized Hegel's doctrine that the individual finds his identity only in the state. Much more liberal than Hegel, Herbart stressed the importance of individuality outside the state.

Lead and its alloys are commonly used as coolant and liquid spallation neutron targets for advanced nuclear reactors and ADS systems. Pb-Mg alloy may be a potential coolant and maintain an acceptable corrosion rate without additional oxygen control in comparison with LBE. A comparative study on corrosion behavior of two f/ M steels (SIMP, T91) and two austenitic steels (316L, 15-15Ti) in liquid Pb-Mg and LBE at 550 C for 1000 h has been studied in this work. In Pb-Mg, f/M steels show slight dissolution corrosion and austenitic steels show severe dissolution corrosion. In LBE, all steels form oxide layers and a three-layer structure is observed in f/M steels.

Low-dimensional nanocarbon reinforcements in multifunctional composites have neither defect-free conjugate structures nor efficient interfacial properties in general. Moreover, synthesizing polymer nanocomposites in-volves intrinsic and extrinsic structural defects, which undoubtedly degrade the properties of the nanocarbons. However, several advantages and even useful applications of such structural defects have pioneered the defect engineering of nanocarbon structures. Here, we assessed the reciprocity of the degradation of single-layer gra-phene and the tailoring of the interfacial load transfer by structural defects. for this purpose, we used a mo-lecular dynamics simulation and its hierarchical bridging to a mean-field micro-mechanics model for linear elastic behavior. Crystallographic defects and oxygen functionalization were considered the representative intrinsic and extrinsic defects, respectively. Despite the notably degraded elasticity of the nanocomposites involving direct load bearing by the defected graphene, those readily governed by the interfacial load transfer were significantly improved. The contributions of both types of defects to the interface were verified using the local stress concentration on the embedded graphene during the mechanical loading of nanocomposites and an additional mode I and II decohesion test. Lastly, the critical aspect ratio of graphene that maximizes the effects of the defects on the interface stiffness of the nanocomposites was derived for defect engineering.

Ce-CLAM specimens were exposed to lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) for 1500 h under 10-6 wt% oxygen concen-tration at 500 degrees C. The continuity and integrity of the oxide scale were better in Ce-CLAM specimens than in CLAM specimens, and the parabolic rate constant kp of oxide scale growth was only about 1/2 that of CLAM specimens. Ce-CLAM specimens exhibited better LBE corrosion resistance compared with CLAM specimens, which was mainly attributed to the inhibition function for fe out-diffusing and the improvement for grain boundaries from Ce. A model was proposed to illustrate the mechanism of Ce-CLAM's LBE corrosion resistance.

The spatial extent and duration of soil freeze/thaw (f/T) control water and heat exchange, the energy cycle, and climate change. Global warming causes permafrost thawing, which increases carbon emissions and in turn exacerbates climate change. Passive microwave remote sensing has been proven to be effective in monitoring land surface f/T. However, it was found that the applicability of existing passive microwave remote sensing-retrieved f/T products in large-scale areas [such as the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP)] was influenced by some landscape factors, such as the arid climate type and terrain elevation gradient. fengYun-3 (fY-3) series satellites have accumulated nearly ten years of passive microwave data, but there is little work based on fY-3 passive microwave data to see its potential in land surface f/T status monitoring. In this work, we proposed a dynamic method to determine the surface f/T status by combining the edge detection method and discriminant function algorithm from fengYun-3B (fY-3B) X- and Ka-band microwave radiation imager (MWRI) data. Comparing the results against three f/T products based on in situ 5-cm soil temperature, we demonstrate that this algorithm performs best over different validation areas with an overall accuracy of 86.5%. More specifically, the new algorithm improved the accuracy of current f/T products in arid and semiarid regions from 73% to 90%. Additionally, the spatial distribution offrozen days over the QTP of 2018 based on the new algorithm has good consistency with the permafrost map. However, the accuracy is influenced by snowmelt and appears to be overestimated for thaw soil during the day. This algorithm performs well in QTP areas with complex topography and climate types and holds the promise of providing users with highly accurate f/T products on larger and even global scales.

High entropy alloy (HEA) thin-film coatings have gained popularity in surface engineering applications because of their excellent physical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. Several factors affect thin-film coating density and microstructure, but most notably, the energy of the species impacting the substrate (adatoms);therefore, the deposition process is crucial. Hardness, wear resistance, toughness, corrosion-resistant, and high/ low-temperature behavior can be significantly influenced by the microstructure of thin-film coatings. In radio frequency (Rf) magnetron sputtering, plasma can be maintained throughout the chamber at lower pressure, so fewer ionized gas collisions occur, and coatings are deposited more efficiently. In comparison, the high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) coating process produces much denser, harder, and smoother coat-ings than conventional thin-film deposition techniques. This study utilized Rf magnetron sputtering and HiPIMS techniques to deposit Al0.5CoCrfeNi2Ti0.5 HEA thin-film coatings. The coatings presented an fCC structure with a (111) preferred orientation, and their surfaces changed from nodular to fine microstructures. The crystallite sizes and surface roughness decreased to 13.27 and 1.33 nm, respectively, based on fWHM and AfM analyses. The lower working pressures were beneficial for obtaining coatings with good properties. furthermore, the Al0.5CoCrfeNi2Ti0.5 HEA thin-film coatings improved the corrosion resistance of the SS 304 substrate. In sum-mary, HiPIMS and Rf magnetron sputtering processes allow for better control of the properties of Al0.5CoCr-feNi2Ti0.5 thin-film coatings, enhancing their potential use in extreme environments.

In this paper, I outline an approach to civil society that is in contradistinction to the dominant liberal conception of civil society as a sphere or sector distinct from the state with inherently positive values. Instead, I argue, civil society always exists in the shadow of the state. I propose to advance a conception of civil society through the combination of two thinkers who are not often combined: G.W.f. Hegel and Michel foucault. from Hegel, I take the conception of the state's regulation of civil society to direct the particular interests towards the universal of the state through the police and, especially, the corporation. By incorporating a specific type of civil society, the state attempts to shape a civil society that advances its own interests. from foucault, I take the conception of civil society as a transactional reality, as well as the conception of neoliberalism as a form of statecraft and the production of subjects. I propose that neoliberalism can be understood as the promotion of the corporate form to all areas of social life. In neoliberalism, the central wealth-producing subject is the corporation, and as a result, the state privileges the corporation by granting it extensive powers, privileges, and exemptions from law. This happens to the detriment of both individual and other collective subjects, making it the primary subject of neoliberal civil society.
