BACKGROUND Takotsubo syndrome is associated with life threatening arrhythmias, and the apical ballooning pattern is characterized by a peculiar QT prolongation and particularly high-risk of arrhythmias. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to determine the association of QT interval on electrocardiogram for ventricular arrhythmic complications in patients with apical ballooning Takotsubo syndrome in a diverse population at a large urban hospital in the U.S. METHODS We reviewed 105 cases of apical ballooning Takotsubo syndrome in patients admitted between 2011 and 2017. Two cardiologists reviewed the electrocardiograms to measure QT interval, adjusted for rate using the fridericia formula (QTCf), and ventricular arrhythmic complications during the hospitalization. Data are reported as median and interquartile range or number and percentage. RESULTS Of the 105 patients, 86 (82%) were female, and 34 (32%) were self-reported Black or African American. The mean age was 65 years (range: 58-72 years). Left ventricular ejection fraction was 25% (range: 25%-35%). Heart rate was 101 beats/min (range: 83-121 beats/min). Ten (11%) patients experienced a ventricular arrhythmic complication and had significantly longer QTCf (470 [range: 422-543] milliseconds) than did those without complications (417 [range: 383-456] milliseconds, P = 0.031). The area under the curve for QTCf was 0.708 (95% CI: 0.536-0.880;P = 0.031). Twenty-eight (27%) patients had a QTCf >= 460 milliseconds and significantly more arrhythmic complications (21% vs 5%, odds ratio 4.997 [95% CI: 1.288-19.237], P = 0.021). QTCf was an independent predictor of ventricular arrhythmias: odds ratio 1.090 for each 10-millisecond increase in QTCf (95% CI: 1.004-1.183;P = 0.040, corrected for sex). CONCLUSIONS In a diverse population of patients with apical ballooning Takotsubo syndrome admitted to a large urban hospital in the United States, QTCf at admission >= 460 milliseconds identifies patients at high risk for in-hosp

A Class E/fodd Power Oscillator Incorporating a Distributed Active Transformer

A power combined high-efficiency oscillator is proposed using a hybrid class E and class f tuning, where the odd harmonics are shorted: the class E/f-odd. The oscillator is achieved by adding a high-pass feedback network to a class E/f-odd amplifier, where the output's odd harmonics are used to construct the required square-like wave at the input. furthermore, two class E/f-odd oscillators can be power combined using a distributed active transformer, where magnetic coupling to the high-pass feedback network can be realized using a third transformer winding. Two power combined class E/f-odd oscillators designed using this method have an oscillation frequency of 10.1 MHz, a total output power of 324 W and dc-to-Rf conversion efficiency of 75%.

Synthesis of celastrol derivatives as potential non-nucleoside hepatitis B virus inhibitors

A series of para-quinone methide (pQM) moiety and C-20- modified derivatives of celastrol were synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory effect on the secretion of HBsAg and HBeAg as well as the inhibitory effect against HBV DNA replication. The results suggested that amidation of C-20 carboxylic group could generate derivatives with good anti-HBV profile, among them compound14showed the best inhibitory activity on the secretion of HBsAg (IC50 = 11.9 mu mu) and HBeAg (IC50 = 13.1 mu mu) with SI of 3.3 and 3.0, respectively. In addition,14also showed potent inhibitory effect against HBV DNA replication (48.5 +/- 15.1%, 25 mu M). This is, to our knowledge, the first report of celastrol derivatives as potential non-nucleoside HBV inhibitors.

Preparation and evaluation of magnetic graphene oxide molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs-GO-fe₃O₄@SiO₂) for the analysis and separation of tripterine

In this study, the novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) with a specific tripterine recognition ability have been synthesized via molecular imprinting technology. The MMIPs were prepared using graphene oxide (GO) with fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with silica shell as the magnetic component, tripterine as the template molecule, methacrylamide (MAM) as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker, acetonitrile (ACN) as the pore-forming agent, and 2,2 '-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator. Several polymerization parameters were systematically investigated, including the ratio of template/functional monomer/cross-linker, the dosage of the pore-forming agent and the initiator, and the time of prepolymerization. The morphology, structure and stability of the resultant MMIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (fT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Saturation magnetization value of MIPs was 37.10 emu/g by superconducting quantum interference magnetometer, exhibiting good magnetic property. The selectivity, separation performance and adsorption mechanism were also studied. These results showed that MIPs exhibit good recognition of tripterine compared to non-imprinted polymer (NIPs). The binding process of MIPs was very fast and the maximum adsorption capacity to tripterine was 30.73 mg/g. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the kinetic data and binding isotherm was well described by Langmuir isotherm model. HPLC-UV analysis results revealed the application of MIPs was sufficiently specific, rapid and sensitive in the extraction, separation and quantitative determination of tripterine. This work also provided an important reference for the separation, enrichment and purification of specific constituent in complicated Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) samples.

Prenatal exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals can interfere with development, and has been associated with social-cognitive functioning and adverse health outcomes later in life. Exposure-associated changes of DNA methylation (DNAm) patterns have been suggested as a possible mediator of this relationship. This study investigated whether prenatal low-dose exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/fs) is associated with altered DNAm patterns across the genome in a Western urban-industrial population. In 142 mother-infant pairs from the Duisburg Birth Cohort Study, PCBs and PCDD/fs levels were quantified from maternal blood during late pregnancy and associated with DNAm levels in cord blood using the Illumina EPIC beadchip. The epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) identified 32 significantly differentially methylated positions (DMPs) and eight differentially methylated regions (DMRs) associated with six congeners of PCB and PCDD in females or males (fDRs < 0.05). DMPs and DMRs mapped to genes involved in neurodevelopment, gene regulation, and immune functioning. Weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA) showed 31 co-methylated modules (fDRs < 0.05) associated with one congener of PCDf levels in females. Results of both analytical strategies indicate that prenatal exposure to PCBs and PCDD/fs is associated with altered DNAm of genes involved in neurodevelopment, gene expression and immune functioning. DNAm and gene expression levels of several of these genes were previously associated with EDC exposure in rodent models. follow-up studies will clarify whether these epigenetic changes might contribute to the origin for adverse mental and health outcomes.

The idea of 'reversion' or 'atavism' has a peculiar history. for many authors in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - including Darwin, Galton, Pearson, Weismann, and Spencer, among others - reversion was one of the central phenomena which a theory of heredity ought to explain. By only a few decades later, however, fisher and others could look back upon reversion as a historical curiosity, a non-problem, or even an impediment to clear theorizing. I explore various reasons that reversion might have appeared to be a central problem for this first group of figures, focusing on their commitment to a variety of conceptual features of evolutionary theory;discuss why reversion might have then ceased to be an interesting phenomenon;and, finally, close with some more general thoughts about the death of scientific problems.

Comparing the Effects of N and P Deficiency on Physiology and Growth for fast- and Slow-Growing Provenances of fraxinus mandshurica

With the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as mineral elements increasingly restrict plant growth. To explore the effect of deficiency of P and N on growth and physiology, fraxinus mandshurica (hereafter "f. mandshurica") Rupr. annual seedlings of Wuchang (WC) provenance with fast growth and Dailing (DL) provenance with slow growth were treated with complete nutrition or starvation of N (N-), P (P-) or both elements (NP-). Although P- and N- increased the use efficiency of P (PUE) and N (NUE), respectively, they reduced the leaf area, chlorophyll content and activities of N assimilation enzymes (NR, GS, GOGAT), which decreased the dry weight and P or N amount. The free amino acid content and activities of Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and acid phosphatase enzymes were reduced by N-. The transcript levels of NRT2.1, NRT2.4, NRT2.5, NRT2.7, AVT1, AAP3, NIA2, PHT1-3, PHT1-4 and PHT2-1 in roots were increased, but those of NRT2.1, NRT2.4, NRT2.5, PHT1-3, PHT1-4, PHT2-1 and AAP3 in leaves were reduced by P-. WC was significantly greater than DL under P- in dry weight, C amount, N amount, leaf area, PUE, NUE, which related to greater chlorophyll content, PEPC enzyme activity, N assimilation enzyme activities, and transcript levels of N and P transporter genes in roots and foliage, indicating a greater ability of WC to absorb, transport and utilize N and P under P-. WC was also greater than DL under N- in terms of the above indicators except the transcript levels of N and P assimilation genes, but most of the indicators did not reach a significant level, indicating that WC might be more tolerant to N- than DL, which requires further verification. In summary, WC was identified as a P-efficient provenance, as the growth rate was greater for the genetic type with high than low tolerance to P-.

Spaceflight breeding could improve the volatile constituents of Andrographis paniculata

The seeds of Andrographis paniculata carried by the Chinese recoverable satellite named "Chang Zheng", "Shen Zhou" and from the parallel ground-based seeds were selected as the samples. Seeds were flown under the space condition for 22 h and 33 days respectively. After returning to earth, the seeds carried by the different satellites and the parallel-ground control were cultivated for three consecutive generations under the same conditions. In this study, a chromatogram was obtained and contents of the volatile constituents in the samples were investigated on a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition, the main components of A. paniculata were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) and the relationship between four different strains and different generations of A. paniculata was evaluated by hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) based on contents (%) of volatile constituents in A. paniculata. The results not only showed that displayed the contents of the volatile compounds (2-methyl-butanal, 3-methyl-butanal, 2-methyl-propanal) increasing with the number of generations in the spaceflight samples but showed the variation of the kinds of volatile constituents. The changes in the kind of volatile components of A. paniculata after spaceflight were firstly reported. There were 43 chemical constituents, which included aldehydes, acids, furans, ketones and alcohols were identified according to their mass spectra determined in both negative and positive ion modes. The CK and H118, D85 and H99 strains exhibited high similarity of volatile composition. The research provided the scientific data for spaceflight breeding of medicinal plants and indicated that space technology may be a new and effective way for the breeding and cultivation of A. paniculata.
