Iron-modified biochar was prepared using woody biomass of Tectona grandis Linn f. for the removal of tetracycline from an aqueous solution. The prepared biochar was characterized by fourier transformed infra-red spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fTIR results showed predominant peaks that confirm the alignment of iron oxide on the surface of the biochar. Similarly, the surface of the iron-modified biochar constitutes a graphite sheet-like structure with irregular projection and peaks fit by XPS further provided evidence for the successful establishment of iron on the surface. The adsorption experiment was subjected to different equilibrium models namely Langmuir freundlich and Temkin, where Langmuir was found to be best fitted for adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 62.5 mg g(-1) at optimal experimental conditions. Pseudo second order with a better correlation coefficient (R-2=0.985) and rate constant (k =0.021) supported the chemical sorption hypothesis of tetracycline on biochar. The adsorption mechanism is well explained by the results obtained which supports surface interaction between biochar and tetracycline (TC). The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the process of adsorption was spontaneous and feasible (& UDelta;G & DEG;<0) while the reaction was found to be endothermic (& UDelta;H & DEG;=152.2J mol(-1)) where randomness (& UDelta;S & DEG;=60.88J mol(-1)) increases at the solid-liquid interface.

A new Stemona alkaloid glycoside derivative, 6-hydroxy-5,6-seco-stemocurtisinoside (4), was isolated from the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Stemona curtisii Hook.f., together with stemocurtisine (1), (11Z)-1',2'-didehydrostemofoline (2) and 6-hydroxy-5,6-seco-stemocurtisine (3). Whereas, stemocurtisine (1), stemocurtisinol (5) and oxyprotostemonine (6) were isolated from the roots. Their structures were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy as well as MS experiments. The extract and the pure isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities and their larvicidal activities against the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti. The alkaloid 2 showed the strongest larvicidal activity with a LC50 value of 2.44 mu M. While the alkaloid 3 exhibited cytotoxicity against MCf-7 and KB cells (IC50 values of 62.52 and 18.82 mu M, respectively) and showed no significant cytotoxicity against Vero cells. Previous studies have suggested that there is a positive correlation between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and prostate volume (PV). A better understanding of the possible influence of PV on a ratio offree to total PSA (f/tPSA) may improve the diagnostic value of the prostate disease. The study group consisted of 342 men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). All patients underwent urinary tract ultrasonography and had tests carried out on PSA, serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and blood pressure. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess the associations between prostate volume and f/tPSA value. We found no obvious relationship between prostate volume and f/tPSA value when PSA >10 ng/ml but did observe a positive correlation when 4 ng/ml < PSA >10 ng/ml (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.0012;95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.0009-0.0248). With increasing prostate volume, multivariate analysis showed an obvious increase in f/tPSA value (HR: 0.0011;95% CI: 0.0007-0.0015) (p <= .0001). We confirmed that prostate volume could affect the f/tPSA levels in serum. There was an obvious positive correlation between prostate volume and f/tPSA level when PSA levels were between 4 and 10ng/dl. There was no significant correlation between prostate volume and f/tPSA value when PSA >10 ng/ml.

Three new compounds (1-3), together with six known compounds (4-9), were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Justicia gendarussa Burm.f. All of these known compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time. Their structures including absolute configurations were elucidated on the basis of HR-ESI-MS, NMR spectroscopic analyses, single crystal X-ray diffraction and comparison with the literatures. Compounds 1-9 were tested for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Compounds 5 and 8 showed the antioxidant activities with IC50 values of 28.61 +/- 1.56 and 22.55 +/- 1.38 mu M, respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 showed anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages with the IC50 values of 20.95 +/- 1.11 and 16.50 +/- 1.04 mu M, respectively.

Three undescribed iridoid glucosides and nine known compounds were isolated from Vitex rotundifolia L. f. Their structural elucidation was performed based on their spectroscopic data or acid hydrolysis followed by HPLC analysis and comparison of their NMR data with those reported in the literature. These iridoids were then evaluated for inflammatory effects through inhibition on NO production level in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The active compounds, rotundifoliin C, isonishindacin A, agnuside, and eurostoside, were further investigated for their anti-inflammatory mechanisms of action on expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 proteins. In addition, V. rotundifolia fractions also significantly inhibited LPS-induced IL-8 production, with IC50 values ranging from 9.81 to 54.31 mu g/mL. Rotundifoliin A, agnuside, VR-I (10-O-vanilloyl aucubin), and eurostoside showed inhibition rates of 55.5%, 94.6%, 55.6%, and 81.9% on IL-8 production at concentrations of 100 mu M, respectively, compared to those of control without sample addition. The therapeutic properties of the plant might give rise to develop the functional products to treat inflammatory diseases.

fritillaria karakocanensis (Liliaceae) is described as a new species from Turkey. It is morphologically similar to f. michailovskyi, f. reuteri and f. rhodocanakis, but differs from f. michailovskyi mainly by its longer stem, canaliculate and narrower leaves, papillose style, and the caducous tepals, from f. reuteri by its many bulblets, canaliculate leaves, longer lower leaves, fewer flowers, and longer tepals, and from f. rhodocanakis by its longer and narrower lower leaves, longer tepals, nectaries and style, and the obovoid capsule. A detailed taxonomic description, diagnostic characters, original photographs, geographical distribution, habitat and ecology, conservation assessment, and taxonomic comments regarding the new species are given.

Phytochemical research on the roots of Chloranthus henryi Hemsl. var. hupehensis (Pamp.) K. f. Wu afforded twenty-three terpenoids, including twenty-two sesquiterpenoids (1-22) and one diterpenoid (23). Their structures were identified by extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data. Among them, six sesquiterpenoids (2, 3, 13-16) were first obtained from the family Chloranthaceae, two sesquiterpenoids (4 and 5) were first reported from the genus Chloranthus, and all the twenty-three terpenoids were isolated for the first time from the investigated plant. Moreover, the chemotaxonomic significance of constituents was also discussed.
