This paper shows an optimizing stream-level authentication approach for secure and robust multimedia delivery over wireless networks. The proposed approach can achieve the optimum end-to-end authentic quality with a lower overhead. The received packet of codestreams is really effective to decrease the distortion, when it is both decodable and verifiable. Therefore, according to the coding and verification dependencies, an authentication optimization model (AOM) is designed to minimize the distortion and overhead. An implementation on the JPEG2000 codestream is realized via using the proposed AOM. By utilizing forward error correction (fec) codes and hash chains, our approach can ensure that the verification dependencies are consistent with the coding dependencies. In other words, the proposed scheme does not cause quality degradations and it also reduce overhead redundancy. Experimental results demonstrate that our scheme achieves more optimizing end-to-end rate-distortion (R-D) performances at any packet-loss rate.

An efficient hybrid ARQ protocol for point-to-multipoint communication and its throughput performance

This paper presents a new point-to-multipoint communication protocol, the nonselective repeat (NSR) protocol for error control over broadcast channels [1], [2], It is a hybrid forward-error-correction (fec)/automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) scheme, based on the adaptive coding technique using incremental redundancy of Mandelbaum [3]. The fec code is a rate-compatible punctured and shortened Reed-Solomon (RS) code, used for error correction only. The scheme is most attractive in situations where error occurrences are almost independent between the recipients of the messages. The throughput performance of the NSR protocol is analyzed in terms of all the parameters involved. Analysis shows that NSR significantly out-performs all the existing pure ARQ broadcast schemes. It is also shown that, even with a large number of recipients, NSR achieves performance which stays close to the capacity of the broadcast q-ary erasure channel, where q = 2(m) and m is the size in bits of a transmitted packet. Furthermore, on slow Rayleigh fading channels, this protocol is expected to provide better throughput performance than other hybrid ARQ protocols.

A load-balancing scheme has a significant effect on the performance of the adaptive zone routing protocol, especially in an ad hoc network environment In order to analyze the effect on the distribution of input traffic among global paths in AZRP (Adaptive Zone Routing Protocol), the routing process is evaluated in terms of two additional local history tables to be maintained in each node: One for the forward error-control (fec) code rate and a second one for the required information rate with the neighboring nodes. Then the local routing process can then be simplified by creating an efficient load balancing rule. We then considered the load balancing as an optimization problem by using congestion parameter (CP). The solution to the optimization problem is interestingly in accordance to CP. Our simulation results show that AZRP with load balancing (B-AZRP) is so effective that the number of throughputs is increased significantly while the network resource can be utilized more efficiently than that in AZRP (Adaptive Zone Routing Protocol). We propose a load balancing for hybrid routing protocol as its name indicates: B-AZRP as an extended from Adaptive Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP) in [1, 2, and 3].

In this paper, problem of optimal sensor scheduling with limited power resources is considered. For a discrete-time linear process, we consider a more practical scenario where forward-error-correcting(fec) coding scheme is utilized. An approximate linearized communication model is introduced to formulate the relationship between the consumption of power and successful-decoding-probability. Different from the present literatures, it is our first attempt to propose an analytical method to figure out the optimal off-line schedules under continuous power space. Numerical examples and essential proofs are provided to demonstrate and highlight the correctness of proposed ideas.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a wireless communication method mostly used in rough indoor environments. In such environments Forward Error Correction (fec) is a popular method to improve the transmission quality. However, the common RFID protocol (EPCglobal) only provides error detection based on Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) codes. The replacement of this code with an arithmetically similar fec code improves the transmission and requires only minor changes to the protocol structure. A BCH code fulfills this requirement. Nevertheless, this code has the disadvantage that it uses only hard-coded bits for the decoding process. This work presents a BCH decoding using the Chase algorithm which also takes the soft information of the received sequence into account. It is shown that a coding gain of 1 dB is achievable in an RFID transmission application, compared to a transmission with a common BCH code. Also an estimation of the computational complexity when using the Chase algorithm is given as this complexity generally increases with this modification.

In this paper, we propose the punctured pilots for channel estimation in OFDMA systems. These are pilots additionally inserted, after puncturing the modulated OFDMA symbols, to enhance channel estimation performance, without lessening bandwidth efficiency. In addition, puncturing scheme of forward error correcting (fec) codes, especially focused on LDPC codes, is also proposed to prevent the performance degradation due to the codeword bits loss caused by punctured OFDMA symbols. Simulation results show that the enhanced channel estimation induces a lower bit error rate (BER) in harsh channel environments.
