A model-based approach to evaluation of the efficacy of fec coding in combating network packet losses

We propose a model-based analytic approach for evaluating the overall efficacy of fec coding combined with interleaving in combating packet losses in IP networks. In particular, by modeling the network path in terms of a single bottleneck node, described as a G/M/1/K queue, we develop a recursive procedure for the exact evaluation of the packet-loss statistics for general arrival processes, based on the framework originally introduced by Cidon et al., 1993. To include the effects of interleaving, we incorporate a discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) into our analytic framework. We study both single-session and multiple-session scenarios, and provide a simple algorithm for the more complicated multiple-session scenario. We show that the unified approach provides an integrated framework for exploring the tradeoffs between the key coding parameters;specifically, interleaving depths, channel coding rates and block lengths. The approach facilitates the selection of optimal coding strategies for different multimedia applications with various user quality-of-service (QoS) requirements and system constraints. We also provide an information-theoretic bound on the performance achievable with fec coding in IP networks.

The use of forward error-control (fec) coding has emerged as a promising approach for real-time transport over ATM networks: for cell-loss recovery. The use of a n fec-based transport protocol over networks with bandwidth constraints, however, is not obvious since fec coding introduces overhead which can possibly cause a dditional cell losses which, furthermore, tend to occur in bursts. In this work, an overall performance evaluation of fec coding is provided by incorporating th e effects of channel coding on the cell-loss characteristics of the network, It is shown that fec coding with proper selection of channel coding rate can significantly improve the throughput at a multiplexer even under correlated cell-loss situations. We also develop and illustrate an information-theoretic approach for incorporating the effects of fec coding into well-established queueing theory calculations. This is achieved by solving separately the channel-coding problem for the modeled transmission channel and the queueing problem for the network. Th e performance of some specific coding designs are shown to approach the information-theoretic predictions with increasing complexity and/or delay.

An integrated fec coding scheme for ATM transmission over regenerative satellite networks

The application of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) on both wireless and satellite networks requires system adaptation. This adaptation has to improve the overall system's performance, and achieve high quality-of-service classes approaching that for fibre-optic communications. In this paper, a new integrated forward-error-correction (fec) coding scheme is introduced for ATM transmission over regenerative satellite networks. The proposed fec scheme is a concatenation of two Reed-Solomon codes tailored for the header and payload parts of the ATM cell. This integrated coding scheme is shown to significantly improve the cell loss ratio as compared to the standard CRC code used in the ATM cell header. We obtain both upper and lower performance bounds for the concatenated code and check their accuracy when compared to exact system's performance. Both analytical and simulation results show that a cell loss ratio and bit-error rate (BER) of 10(-25) and 10(-7) can be, respectively, achieved with minimum delay requirements on the SATCOM link. Finally, an approximation for the system's throughout is obtained. It is shown that using a hybrid selective-repeat automatic-repeat-request (SR-ARQ) with the RS code, a large throughput of approximately 0.843 can be achieved at BERs lower than 10(-7) for data services. In this paper, we propose an adaptive maximum-likelihood (ML) sequence estimator with RLS channel estimation, which is assisted by forward error control (fec) coding. The reliable symbols reconstructed in the fec decoder are used as the feedback signal to the RLS channel estimator. The scheme is compared with decision feedback equalization (DFE) with RLS algorithm, which is assisted by fec coding. Computer simulations show that in frequency-selective fast fading mobile radio channels, the proposed scheme performs better at moderate Doppler frequencies. It is suitable for four-phase modulation data transmission at the rate of several 10 kb/s in 900 MHz band or in the 1800 MHz band.

This paper introduces an effective software-based fec redundant packets generating algorithm. The algorithm is based on Reed-Solomon coding over Galois Field. By operating on words of packets and performing polynomial multiplication via lookup tables, software coding efficiency is achieved to satisfy the needs of most of computer network applications. The approach to generate lookup tables is detailed.

Reliable video delivery has become one of the crucial issues in wireless video communications. Based on different error resilient property of forward error correction (fec)and Wyner-Ziv (WZ), we propose a scheme which combines these two technologies. Experimental results demonstrate the scheme can possess their both advantages and have an improvement in the average peak signal to noise ratio(PSNR).

The performance of meteor burst communication using adaptive data-rate modulation is analysed. The transmitted data-rate is a function of the channel state, and is varied in a such way that the probability of bit error is kept constant. Unlike other performance analyses, the message consists of data-packets, thus allowing more realistic ARQ protocols to be analysed. The performance of the system is given in terms of average throughput, probability of successful message completion in a given time span and average waiting time for different message lengths, with or without coding.

Smart versus dumb antennas - Capacities and fec performance

We compare two approaches to use multiple transmit antennas in an fec coded wireless system: Smart antennas use an antenna array to direct a beam in the direction of the dominant transmission path in order to obtain an antenna gain. Another approach is to use multiple transmit antennas for diversity using space-time block codes. Since no knowledge of the channel is required at the transmitter we denote this approach as dumb antennas. Using equivalent single-input channel models we compare smart and dumb antennas in terms of BER performance and channel capacity and discuss under which conditions it is preferable to use multiple transmit antennas for transmit diversity or for beamforming.

An HD Radio broadcast signal is uniquely defined by its service mode. Several service modes have been available to AM and FM broadcasters for nearly two decades. Only recently have various HD Radio stakeholders begun requesting additional backward-compatible options for improved robustness and capacity. Even non-backward-compatible improvements could be introduced for all-digital, international, and new North American data applications. This paper proposes a new set of service modes developed in response to these emerging market demands and opportunities. To enhance flexibility, each new service mode may employ one of three quadrature amplitude modulation formats, allowing broadcasters to trade robustness for capacity. Since all new service modes feature frequency diversity between lower and upper sidebands, as well as time diversity between main and backup components, they are collectively referred to as lower-upper-main-backup (LUMB) service modes. This multidimensional diversity scheme offers fast tuning and enhances signal robustness in the presence of selective fading, interference, blockages, and other channel outages.

Impulse radio-ultra wideband (IR-UWB) communication technique Is considered as a strong candidate for short range biomedical wireless sensor networks (BWSN). Coexistence with other systems In the ISM band Is Important, where norrowband interference (NBI) can become a threat to this system. This paper proposes a method to Increase robustness or IR-UWB system In the existence or NBI. This method takes the advantage of using both fec coding and frequency interleaving technique. One of the features of the proposed system is that It performs well in an environment with unknown NBI. Comparisons between single-band and multi-band signaling schemes are given. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-band scheme performs well in existence of NBI and provides about 3.5 dB gain In comparison to single-hand scheme with the same configuration, where the NBI to AWGN energy ratio equals 30 dB.
