An eXtended Finite Element Method/Lagrange multiplier based approach for fluid-structure interaction

This paper presents a new fixed grid fluid-structure interaction scheme that can be applied to the interaction of most general structures with incompressible flow. It is based on an eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) based strategy. The extended Eulerian fluid field and the Lagrangian structural field are partitioned and iteratively coupled using Lagrange multiplier techniques for non-matching grids. The approach allows the simulation of the interaction of thin and bulky structures exhibiting large deformations. Finally, qualitative examples and a benchmark computation demonstrate key features and accuracy of the method. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Numerical Prediction of fluid-Elastic Instability in Normal Triangular Tube Bundles With Multiple Flexible Circular Cylinders

Prediction of fluid-elastic instability onset is a great matter of importance in designing cross-flow heat exchangers from the perspective of vibration. In the present paper, the threshold of fluid-elastic instability has been numerically predicted by the simulation of incompressible, unsteady, and turbulent cross flow through a tube bundle in a normal triangular arrangement. In the tube bundle under study, there were single or multiple flexible cylinders surrounded by rigid tubes. A finite volume solver based on a Cartesians-taggered grid was implemented. In addition, the ghost-cell method in conjunction with the great-source-term technique was employed in order to directly enforce the no-slip condition on the cylinders' boundaries. interactions between the fluid and the structures were considered in a fully coupled manner by means of intermittence solution of the flow field and structural equations of motion in each time step of the numerical modeling algorithm. The accuracy of the solver was validated by simulation of the flow over both a rigid and a flexible circular cylinder. The results were in good agreement with the experiments reported in the literatures. Eventually, the flow through seven different flexible tube bundles was simulated. The fluid-elastic instability was predicted and analyzed by presenting the structural responses, trajectory of flexible cylinders, and critical reduced velocities.

Free vibration and dynamic response of a fluid-coupled double elliptical plate system using Mathieu functions

A three-dimensional analytic model involving products of angular and radial Mathieu functions is developed for the exact free vibration analysis and transient acousto-structural response of two parallel elliptical plates, coupled with an internal bounded inviscid and compressible fluid medium, and under general external transverse loads of arbitrary temporal and spatial variations. Extensive numerical data are presented in an orderly fashion for the first ten symmetric/anti-symmetric system natural frequencies as a function of fluid layer thickness parameter for selected plate aspect ratios. Also, the occurrences of frequency veering phenomena between various modes of the same symmetry group and the interchange of associated mode shapes in the veering region are noted and discussed. Moreover, selected fluid-coupled structural deformation mode shapes are presented in vivid graphical form and the issue of mode localization is examined. The Laplace transform with respect to the time variable is subsequently invoked and a linear system of coupled algebraic equations is ultimately obtained, which is truncated and then solved by implementing Durbin's Laplace inversion algorithm accompanied with special solution convergence enhancement techniques for eradication of spurious oscillations (Gibbs' phenomenon). Numerical simulations are conducted for the displacement time histories of water-coupled double aluminum plates of selected aspect ratios and fluid depths, subjected to external loads of practical interest (i.e., an impulsive point load, a concentrated pulse load, and a uniformly distributed blast load). Validity of the results is established through computations made by using a commercial finite element package as well as by comparison with the data available in literature. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Stability Analysis and Transient Response of Electrostatically Actuated Microbeam Interacting With Bounded Compressible fluids

This paper studies the stability and transient response of electrostatically excited microbeam interacting with bounded compressible fluid. At first, employing Fourier-Bessel series, the related eigenvalue problem of the coupled system is solved. Investigating the change in the free vibration properties of the system, a parametric study is done, accounting for changing physical properties and geometric dimensions of the bounded fluid. Then, considering the step response of the coupled system, pull-in time and voltage and also attraction zones of the microbeam are derived. It is shown that, beside the electrical property of the contained fluid, its inertial property could also change the transient response significantly. fluid added mass by increasing the period of the free vibration response in stable condition also changes the pull-in time. In addition, it is found that the attraction zones of stable fixed points vary for different contained fluids that could change the sensitivity of the microbeam to uncertainty in the initial condition. A hybrid immersed boundary and material point method for simulating 3D fluid-structure interaction problems

A numerical method is developed for solving the 31), unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in curvilinear coordinates containing immersed boundaries (IBs) of arbitrary geometrical complexity moving and deforming under forces acting on the body. Since simulations of flow in complex geometries with deformable surfaces require special treatment, the present approach combines a hybrid immersed boundary method (HIBM) for handling complex moving boundaries and a material point method (MPM) for resolving structural stresses and movement. This combined HIBM & MPM approach is presented as an effective approach for solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. In the HIBM, a curvilinear grid is defined and the variable values at grid points adjacent to a boundary are forced or interpolated to satisfy the boundary conditions. The MPM is used for solving the equations of solid structure and communicates with the fluid through appropriate interface-boundary conditions. The governing flow equations are discretized on a non-staggered grid layout using second-order accurate finite-difference formulas. The discrete equations are integrated in time via a second-order accurate dual time stepping, artificial compressibility scheme. Unstructured, triangular meshes are employed to discretize the complex surface of the IBs. The nodes of the surface mesh constitute a set of Lagrangian control points used for tracking the motion of the flexible body. The equations of the solid body are integrated in time via the MPM. At every instant in time, the influence of the body on the flow is accounted for by applying boundary conditions at stationary curvilinear grid nodes located in the exterior but in the immediate vicinity of the body by reconstructing the solution along the local normal to the body surface. The influence of the fluid on the body is defined through pressure and shear stresses acting on the surface of the body. The HIBM & MPM approach is validated for FSI problems

Multiphase modeling of dynamic fluid-structure interaction during close-in explosion

The modified ghost fluid method (MGFM) developed by Liu et al. (J. Comput. Phys. 2003;190:651-681) provides us a robust method to treat moving compressible gas-gas and gas-liquid interfaces. Recently, the MGFM was extended to treat compressible fluid-compressible structure interfaces, where the structure was assumed to be very thick or infinitely thick (Comput. Mech. 2007;40:667-681). In this work, the MGFM is applied to investigate the complex physics that occur during an underwater explosion inside a fluid-filled cylinder. Owing to the refraction of strong rarefaction waves at the fluid-structure interface and inside the thin cylinder wall, cavitation occurs next to the cylinder wall in the fluid;simultaneously, solid tension waves may appear next to the fluid-structure interface inside the structure. Both phenomena tend to cause the implicit double-shock approximate Riemann problem solver (the key component used to predict the fluid-structure interface status in the MGFM) to work less effectively in regions of low pressure and to be invalid when tension waves appear in the vicinity of the fluid-structure interface. To overcome these mentioned difficulties, the MGFM will be further developed in this work. Owing to the high initial pressure, short duration and high intensity of the shock load and cavitation reload, the compressibility of the structure becomes important, and the cylinder can be modeled as a compressible fluid-like medium. The hydro-elasto-plastic equation of state is, thus, used to describe the constitutive behavior of the compressible solid cylinder. A systematic study of the cavitation reload is conducted to examine the influence of the wall material, wall thickness, explosion distance, and explosion strength on the fluid and structural responses. Interface projection techniques for fluid-structure interaction modeling with moving-mesh methods

The stabilized space-time fluid-structure interaction (SSTFSI) technique developed by the Team for Advanced Flow Simulation and Modeling (T*AFSM) was applied to a number of 3D examples, including arterial fluid mechanics and parachute aerodynamics. Here we focus on the interface projection techniques that were developed as supplementary methods targeting the computational challenges associated with the geometric complexities of the fluid-structure interface. Although these supplementary techniques were developed in conjunction with the SSTFSI method and in the context of air-fabric interactions, they can also be used in conjunction with other moving-mesh methods, such as the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method, and in the context of other classes of FSI applications. The supplementary techniques currently consist of using split nodal values for pressure at the edges of the fabric and incompatible meshes at the air-fabric interfaces, the FSI Geometric Smoothing Technique (FSI-GST), and the Homogenized Modeling of Geometric Porosity (HMGP). Using split nodal values for pressure at the edges and incompatible meshes at the interfaces stabilizes the structural response at the edges of the membrane used in modeling the fabric. With the FSI-GST, the fluid mechanics mesh is sheltered from the consequences of the geometric complexity of the structure. With the HMGP, we bypass the intractable complexities of the geometric porosity by approximating it with an "equivalent", locally-varying fabric porosity. As test cases demonstrating how the interface projection techniques work, we compute the air-fabric interactions of windsocks, sails and ringsail parachutes.

Dynamic behaviour of a flexible yacht sail plan

A numerical investigation of the dynamic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) of a yacht sail plan submitted to harmonic pitching is presented to address both issues of aerodynamic unsteadiness and structural deformation. The FSI model - Vortex Lattice Method fluid model and Finite Element structure model - have been validated with full-scale measurements. It is shown that the dynamic behaviour of a sail plan subject to yacht motion clearly deviates from the quasi-steady theory. The aerodynamic forces presented as a function of the instantaneous apparent wind angle show hysteresis loops, suggesting that some energy is exchanged by the system. The area included in the hysteresis loop increases with the motion reduced frequency and amplitude. Comparison of rigid versus soft structures shows that FSI increases the energy exchanged by the system and that the oscillations of aerodynamic forces are underestimated when the structure deformation is not considered. Dynamic loads in the fore and aft rigging wires are dominated by structural and inertial effects. This FSI model and the obtained results may be useful firstly for yacht design, and also in the field of auxiliary wind assisted ship propulsion, or to investigate other marine soft structures. Modelling and simulation of the sea-landing of aerial vehicles using the Particle Finite Element Method

In this paper the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) is applied to the simulation of the sea-landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The problem of interest consists in modelling the impact of the vehicle against the water surface, analyzing the main kinematic and dynamic quantities (such as loads exerted upon the capsule at the moment of the impact). The PFEM, a methodology well-suited for free-surface flow simulation is used for modelling the water while a rigid body model is chosen for the vehicle. The vehicle under consideration is characterized by low weight. This leads to difficulties in modelling the fluid-structure interaction using standard Dirichlet-Neumann coupling. We apply a modified partitioned strategy introducing the interface Laplacian into the pressure Poisson's equation for obtaining a convergent FSI solution. The paper concludes with an industrial example of a vehicle sea-landing modelled using PFEM. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Homogenisation method for the modal analysis of tube bundle with fluid-structure interaction modelling

The present paper is concerned with the modal analysis of a two-dimensional tube bundle with fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modelling. The numerical modelling of FSI effects is performed with a homogenisation approach, using a method whose principles have been presented in a previous paper for the modal analysis of a nuclear reactor with internal structures and FSI modelling [J. F. Sigrist, D. Broc, Homogenisation method for the modal analysis of a nuclear reactor with internal structures modelling and fluid structure-interaction coupling, Nucl. Eng. Des. 237 (2007) 431-440]. The method is adapted here in the case of tube bundle and compared with the classical approach, based on a direct finite element discretisation of the coupled problem with all tubes modelling. The theoretical background of the method is recalled, the numerical implementation in a finite element code is exposed and a comparison of the '' homogenisation '' and '' coupled '' methods is proposed in the case of a 10 x 10 tube bundle. Calculation of eigenmode shapes, frequencies and effective masses with the two methods is performed;it is concluded that: (i) the computational time is significantly lowered when using the homogenisation method instead of the coupled method, since the problem size is reduced by 90%;(ii) the tube bundle dynamic is described in a space-averaged manner, which is sufficient to account for the main inertial coupling effects. Extension of the method to a three-dimensional case can now be considered;implementation of the method in a commercial finite element code is also currently investigated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B. V.
