fluid-structure interaction (FSI), which solves the coupling between solid and fluid, has more and more been adopted by researchers to better study interaction between the hydrodynamic and structural flexibility. In this paper we adopt FSI and study a model simplified from the pectoral fin of Koi Carp. Flexibility is a comprehensive assessment of soft structures, it not only relates to the material constitutive parameter, but also relates to the apparent morphology parameter. The Young's modulus and moment of inertia are two typical parameters. In this paper we first investigate the Young's modulus' effect on the propulsive performance, the fluid structures are analyzed and the motions are presented, then we discuss the moment of inertia, their thrust forces are compared. Results show that proper flexibility can greatly increase the thrust forces while too flexible fin's behavior is worse. Moreover, the bending stiffness, a uniform parameter combines the material property and morphology parameter, is explored. It is found out that even for the same bending stiffness, different couples of Young's modulus and moment of inertia will lead to different propulsive performance. These findings will provide a useful guidance for the design and manufacture of novel flexible underwater bio-mimetic vehicles.

Strongly coupled partitioned fluid-structure interaction problems require multiple coupling iterations per time step. The fluid domain and the structure domain are solved multiple times in each time step such that the kinematic and dynamic interface conditions on the fluid-structure interface are satisfied. Quasi-Newton methods have been successfully applied in case the fluid and structure solvers are considered as black boxes, i.e. only input and output information of the solvers are used by the coupling techniques. In this contribution a computationally inexpensive low-fidelity model is combined with a high-fidelity model in order to accelerate the convergence of the high-fidelity model. This is achieved by applying the manifold mapping algorithm on the fluid-structure interaction problem in order to minimize the fluid-structure interface residual. Originating from multi-fidelity optimization, the manifold mapping algorithm is applied for the first time in a simulation context, instead of an optimization context. The manifold mapping algorithm is applied on a standard fluid-structure interaction benchmark, namely the cylinder flap FSI3 case. A reduction of 48% in terms of high fidelity iterations is achieved compared with the inverse least squares Quasi-Newton algorithm, resulting in a 42% decrease in computational costs.

This work introduces an efficient approach to fluid-structure interaction featuring the coupling of modally reduced multibody system analysis with particle-based fluid mechanics. While the multibody system is computed with respect to a small set of generalized coordinates, the transformation to the full set of actual coordinates is done in the fully parallel framework of the fluid particle simulation. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated and validation is provided along with several numerical examples.

The paper presents a novel Lagrangian meshfree computational solver for simulation of hydroelastic fluid-elastic structure interaction (FSI) problems. An explicit Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, referred to as Riemann SPH, is adopted as the fluid model, and a SPH method within the Hamiltonian framework, namely Hamiltonian SPH (HSPH), is considered as the structure model. A two-way coupling between fluid and structure models is performed in a consistent manner, resulting in a coupled RSPH-HSPH hydroelastic FSI solver. For enhancement of accuracy and robustness of the proposed FSI solver, four refined schemes are incorporated for the fluid and structure models. These four refined schemes include (i) a novel dissipation limiter in the fluid's continuity equation for enforcing the volume conservation, (ii) a refined reconstruction of the quantities in Riemann SPH in the presence of a potential field, (iii) a modified velocity-divergence error mitigation term in the fluid's momentum equation for enhanced satisfaction of the incompressibility condition, and (iv) a Riemann diffusion term in the structural momentum equation for enhanced stability and robustness. Validations of the proposed FSI solver are carried out through a series of fluid, structure and FSI benchmark tests.

The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage tank is stored in specially engineered and constructed double-walled structure which are essential for receiving and safe storage of the liquid gas. The 160000m(3) LNG storage tank has 800mm thick post-tensioned concrete walls on the exterior and the inner tank is made of a special steel/nickel alloy to accommodate cold LNG. In this study, a finite element modeling method for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is proposed and the multi-physics coupling method of the fluid and structure is used to investigate the aseismic behavior of the 160000m(3) LNG storage tanks. By using this modeling method of FSI, a finite element model for the tank is established mainly by the fluid80 elements and SHELL181 elements based on software ANSYS. The characteristics of natural vibration for the LNG tank is obtained by taking the reduced method for modal analysis. The results show that there are generally three kinds of vibrational mode types including convective mode, circular multi-wave mode and impulsive mode. Several published experimental results have been used to verify the multi-physics coupling method and the results are almost identical with the computational results. As one of the applications of the FSI method, the dynamic responses of the LNG tank structures under seismic excitation can be obtained considering the influences of pile-soil interaction, liquid level of LNG, the site classification, direction and intensity of earthquake, and the leakage of LNG liquid. The results of research can provide a reference for the design and construction of LNG tank structures.

This paper proposed a numerical approach called improved FE-BE (finite element-boundary element) method to solve the fluid-structure interaction problems of plate-like systems. In order to avoid the mesh of both faces of the thin plates, some dumb structures were added to make the plate systems closed. Thus the conventional FE-BE method can be adopted to solve this problem. The dynamic response equation of the inner region can be obtained by the FE method, and the acoustic added mass and damping coefficients of the exterior region can be obtained by the BE method. Then the final fluid-structure interaction equation can be easily solved. Numerical results of some examples are computed to demonstrate the validation of the present method. The comparison of numerical results and reference solutions shows that the proposed method is acceptable for solving the fluid-structure interaction of plates.

A comparative study of interpolation algorithms on non-matching meshes for PFEM-FEM fluid-structure interactions

In simulations involving fluid-structure interactions, the partitioned coupling approach allows calculating the fluid flow and the structural displacement using different solvers, which are coupled by a structure-to-fluid algorithm. This partitioned scheme can result in non-conforming meshes at the solid-fluid interface, especially when the fluid and the structure meshes contain elements of different characteristic sizes. In this context, a mesh-interpolation technique is required to transmit the nodal information from one mesh to the other. This paper focuses on comparing radial basis functions and k-nearest neighbours interpolations on fluid-structure interaction test cases. Indeed, those are fast and flexible techniques requiring no topological information other than relative distances between nodes, allowing a straightforward transfer of nodal data between non-conforming meshes. This feature is particularly favourable in the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM), where remeshing procedures result in significant changes of the finite element discretisation at the fluid-structure interface. Accordingly, our contribution compares the interpolations in a PFEM/FEM partitioned scheme, using 2D and 3D benchmark problems.

Role of fluid-structure interactions in mechanosensation during hovering flapping flight

Insect wings, known for their intricate structure and function, inherently deform during flapping motion. These deformations can be classified into chordwise cambering, spanwise bending, and root-to-tip twisting, arising from non-uniform venation distribution, aerodynamic loading, and wing inertia. Crucially, such deformations play a vital role in enhancing both aerodynamic performance and mechanosensory function. To investigate the complex interplay between wing structure, unsteady aerodynamics, and mechanosensation, we developed a fully coupled threedimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver. This framework integrates an in-house Navier-Stokes equations solver for resolving the flow field with the open-source Vega FEM code to solve the solid structure dynamics. Our FSI simulations reveal that venation structures significantly enhance aerodynamic efficiency by enabling complex deformation patterns. Wings with moderate stiffness (reduced stiffness K = 3.94) values strike an optimal balance between lift generation and energy efficiency, outperforming both rigid and excessively flexible configurations (6 % higher lift generation and 89 % higher power efficiency, compared to rigid wings). In contrast with uniform wings, at K = 3.94, wings with venation structure generate 8 % less lift but the power efficiency is 25 % higher. Additionally, the time history of strain energy density closely mirrors the trend of aerodynamic forces, suggesting that local strain energy sensed by embedded mechanosensors could potentially predict aerodynamic forces. This finding highlights a direct functional link between unsteady aerodynamics and sensory feedback in insect wings. These results underscore the critical roles of wing stiffness, venation structures, and unsteady aerodynamics in shaping both the aerodynamic and sensory performance of insect-inspired wings. Coupled systems occur when two domains governed by dissimilar physics interact dynamically, resulting in strong two-way coupling between the domains. Research into these systems has become increasingly prevalent due to the wide variety of physical examples that exhibit these characteristics, as well as recent advancements in computational capability and parallelism. A notable example of coupled systems occurs in fluid-structure interaction (FSI), in which a deformable solid is surrounded by and/or immersed in a fluid. These systems exhibit strong, two-way coupling between the fluid and solid domains that require the development of expanded computational methods to solve. While current methods have provided the basis for the solution of these types of problems, optimizations are needed to solve realistic FSI problems. Existing overset mesh technology has been incorporated into an ALE based fluid-structure interaction (FSI) code, producing a novel approach for investigating fully-coupled FSI phenomena. In particular, the Suggar++/DiRTlib overset mesh technology has been implemented into a partitioned FSI solver based on OpenFOAM and an in-house structural code. The impetus of this solver has been to address some of the problems that occur in complex FSI simulations, most notably concerns with the mesh motion experienced in large deformation cases. The overset solver intends to simplify mesh generation, maintain mesh quality throughout the simulation, and provide similar performance to current approaches. This thesis provides verification of the overset FSI solver and presents the effects of overset methods on FSI *** is presented through the method of manufactured solutions on the disparate solver components and mesh refinement studies are performed on the coupled code. Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Influence of fluid-structure interactions on the Dynamic Characteristics of a Flexible Tank

Purpose This study investigates the impact of two-way fluid-structure interactions (FSIs) on the dynamic behavior of flexible liquid storage tanks. A hybrid approach, integrating the finite volume method (FVM) with the finite element method (FEM), referred to as FVM/FEM, was employed to simulate the behavior of flexible water tank under seismic loading. Methods The fluid domain was modeled using FVM, while the structural domain was represented through FEM. The FVM/FEM model offers essential insights into modeling two-way FSI, allowing evaluation of two-way FSI effects on the dynamic characteristics of a tank with flexible and rigid walls. The accuracy of the coupling FVM/FEM method was confirmed through comparison with previous studies and design codes, focusing on natural frequency, liquid sloshing, and hydrodynamic pressure measurements. Results Results indicated that the frequencies of flexible tank walls differ from those of rigid walls, particularly in terms of the hydrodynamic pressure exerted by liquid motion. The peak hydrodynamic pressure on thick-walled tanks, when considering FSI, was 38.2 kPa, a minimal deviation of 0.2% from the ACI standards (38.12 kPa) and 5.47% from EC8 (36.11 kPa). The analysis further revealed that incorporating two-way interaction in thin-walled tanks increases the deviation from ACI and EC8 standards to 12.2% and 16.8%, respectively. Conclusion A "threshold value" was identified to differentiate between flexible and rigid tanks;beyond this threshold, thicker tanks experience lower hydrodynamic pressure, whereas thinner tanks show the opposite effect. The study confirms a strong correlation between the numerical results and the analytical, published, and experimental data.
