Sensorineural hearing impairment is associated with decreased speech perception due to increased intraspeech spectral masking. For persons with moderate bilateral sensorineural loss, binaural dichotic presentation using a pair of complementary comb filters can reduce the effects of increased intraspeech spectral masking and thereby improve speech perception. It has been earlier shown that use of comb filters based on auditory critical bandwidths, with magnitude responses designed for perceptual balance of loudness and linear phase responses, resulted in a significant improvement in speech perception without adversely affecting localization of broadband sound sources. An fpga-basedimplementation of these 513-coefficient filters with sampling frequency of 10 kHz is carried out for use in binaural hearing aids. implementation using a 16-bit codec and 15-bit integer filter coefficients used 47%, 34%, and 53% of combinational functions, logic registers, and logic elements, respectively, available on "Altera Cyclone II EP2C70F896C6" fpga. The resulting magnitude responses have a close match to the offline floating-point implementation.

Sensorineural hearing loss, caused by damage to the cochlea in the inner ear or to the auditory nerve, is associated with reduced dynamic range and increased spectral and temporal masking and results in degraded speech perception. For listeners using binaural hearing aids, spectral splitting of the speech signal can be used to reduce the effects of increased intraspeech spectral masking thereby improving speech perception. It has been reported that a pair of linear-phase comb filters, with auditory critical bandwidth based complementary magnitude responses selected for perceptual balance of loudness, resulted in a significant improvement in speech perception without affecting localization of broadband sound sources. The paper presents an investigation for fpga-basedimplementation of these comb filters for use in binaural hearing aids. It is shown that a processing architecture employing sequential multiply-accumulate operations results in an efficient implementation.

This paper presents a hardware implementation approach for the feature extraction of MRI images using wavelet transform. In this paper wavelet based texture feature extraction method has been proposed. Which has mainly two steps (i) The input MRI image is decomposed into different frequency sub band images using 2-D Discrete Wavelet Transform, (ii) by using Segmentation based Fractal texture analysis (SFTA) the extraction of texture features are done from the decomposed Low frequency image. For evaluating the Performance of this proposed technique the comparison with GLCM and Haralick's texture feature are done in terms of MSE and classification accuracy. This paper proposes an edge-map generation technique for pupil detection in near infrared (NIR) images and its hardware implementation. The proposed edge-map generation technique is based on generating two different edge-maps of same eye image using Gaussian filtering, image binarization and Sobel edge detection operations and then combining them to a single edge-map using intersection operation on binary images. This technique reduces the false edges drastically in the edge-map of eye image, which is desirable for accurate and fast pupil detection. Field programmable logic array (fpga) based hardware implementation of the proposed technique is presented, which can be used in iris localization system on fpgabased platforms for iris recognition application. This paper presents a phase compensated novel signal conditioner for a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) and its fpga based implementation. The LVDT output signal is a double-sideband suppressed-carrier amplitude-modulated (DSB-SC-AM) waveform, where the LVDT sinusoidal excitation is the carrier signal and the LVDT core position is the modulating signal. The proposed signal conditioner locates the carrier peaks in the LVDT output signal and provides a direct digital demodulation of the same at the said instants. Since the carrier component at the sampling instants equals the carrier amplitude, a simple gain scaling converts the read data to the LVDT core position measurement. The peak sensitive demodulation is insensitive to sensor induced phase lag and does not require external phase compensation network. This conditioner has better dynamic response than existing LVDT signal conditioners. Its overall error figures are also comparable with those of the existing solutions.

Specific architectures for different low level vision modalities have been developed and described using reconfigurable hardware. Each of them tries to solve a single low level vision problem: optical flow, disparity, segmentation, tracking, etc. We introduce a novel architecture that includes multiple processing engines in a massively parallel low level vision processing engine of very high complexity and performance. Our design is able to process input images and extract at the same time different visual features such as multi-scale stereo, optical flow and local contrast descriptors such as local orientation, energy or phase. The latest hardware design techniques have been employed in order to achieve the presented system with more than 2000 basic processing elements running in parallel. We have based our system in a Harmonic filter image decomposition model based on Gabor-like filters. It has been validated in multiple scenarios in previous works and it allows sharing hardware resources among different vision modalities on the same chip. In this paper we present an fpga based implementation of this intensive processing engine as well as the designing techniques employed. The circuit processes input frames of 512x512 pixels at 28 frames per second.

This paper deals with carrier synchronization problem in coherent communication system, such as BPSK and QPSK. First, this paper surveys and analyzes currently existing carrier synchronization algorithms and relevant receiver structures. After an analysis of those methods, a novel algorithm called feedback compensation is proposed, including the receiver structures based on this new synchronization algorithm. This new algorithm can not only simplify the signal processing stage but also decouple the demodulator and carrier synchronization module. At last, fpgaimplementation results are presented and discussed.
