Impulsive noise reduction is a special problem raised in active noise control (ANC) systems. The filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm is a typical ANC method that has been successfully applied in practical applications. Some variants such as the logarithmic FILMS and modified FILMS algorithms have been proposed to deal with the impulsive noise for ANC. However, those methods require considerable computational loading in real-time applications. In this paper, a modified median fxlms method is proposed for its low complexity to avoid the effect of the impulsive noise. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better averaged noise reduction performance than the conventional fxlms and other order statistics based fxlms algorithms. In addition, the computational complexity stays the minimum requirement through using only the ordering operation, which is very suitable for the real-time implementation.

This paper deals with active noise control (ANC) in an enclosure on a broadband frequency range. It aims to compare two control strategies: (i) an adaptive control approach namely fxlms control, (ii) a robust Hoo control, in the SISO (single input single output) case. Only feedback scheme is considered and disturbance sources are assumed to be unknown. For the aim of a fair comparison focusing on the same frequency range of attenuation, a new fxlms algorithm with a weighting filter is proposed. Finally, achievable performances of each control are analyzed through simulation and experimental results driven on an instrumented setup. A multi-resolution filtered-x LMS algorithm based on discrete wavelet transform for active noise control

We have developed a new active control algorithm based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for both stationary and non-stationary noise control. First, the Mallat pyramidal algorithm is introduced to implement the DWT, which can decompose the reference signal into several sub-bands with multi-resolution and provides a perfect reconstruction (PR) procedure. To reduce the extra computational complexity introduced by DINT, an efficient strategy is proposed that updates the adaptive filter coefficients in the frequency domainDeepthi B.B using a fast Fourier transform (FFT). Based on the reference noise source, a 'Haar' wavelet is employed and by decomposing the noise signal into two sub-band (3-band), the proposed DWT-FFT-based fxlms (DWT-FFT-fxlms) algorithm has greatly reduced complexity and a better convergence performance compared to a time domain filtered-x least mean square (TD-fxlms) algorithm. As a result of the outstanding time-frequency characteristics of wavelet analysis, the proposed DWT-FFT-fxlms algorithm can effectively cancel both stationary and non-stationary noise, whereas the frequency domain fxlms (FD-fxlms) algorithm cannot approach this point. On active noise control systems with online acoustic feedback path modeling

The presence of strong acoustic feedback degrades the convergence speed of the active noise control (ANC) filter, and in the worst case the ANC system may become unstable. A fixed feedback neutralization filter, obtained offline, can be used to neutralize the acoustic feedback. The feedback path, however, may be time varying, and we may need continual adjustments during online operation of the ANC system. This paper proposes a new method for online modeling of the acoustic feedback path in ANC systems. The proposed method uses three adaptive filters;a noise control filter, a feedback path modeling (FBPM) filter, and an adaptive noise cancelation (ADNC) filter. The objective of ADNC filter is to remove the disturbance from the desired response of FBPM filter. In comparison with the existing method, which works only for predicable noise sources, the proposed method can work, as well, with the broadband noise sources. The computer simulations are carried out for narrowband (predictable) (case 1) and broadband (random) noise sources (case II). It is demonstrated that the proposed method performs better than the existing method in both cases.

Data-reusing-based filtered-reference adaptive algorithms for active control of impulsive noise sources

This paper deals with the adaptive algorithms for active noise control (ANC) systems being employed for the impulsive noise sources. The standard filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm;based on the minimization of the variance of the error signal;is well suited for attenuation of Gaussian noise sources. For the impulsive noise;modeled as a stable non-Gaussian process;however, the second order moments do not exist and hence the fxlms algorithm becomes unstable. The filtered-x least mean p-power (FxLMP) algorithm - based on minimizing the fractional lower order moment (FLOM) - gives robust performance for impulsive ANC;however, its convergence speed is very slow. This paper proposes two data-reusing (DR)-based adaptive algorithms for impulsive ANC. The Proposed-I DR algorithm is based on the normalized step-size fxlms (NSS-fxlms) algorithm, and the Proposed-II DR algorithm is based on the Author's recently proposed NSS generalized FxLMP (NSS-GFxLMP) algorithm. Extensive simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in comparison with. the existing algorithms. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Maximum versoria criterion applied to hybrid active noise control algorithm for the impulsive noise

In the conventional hybrid active noise control (CHANC) algorithm, the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm is used in both feedforward and feedback structures. However, the fxlms algorithm does not process the reference signal and the error signal before updating the weight vector, which leads to the inadequate robustness of the CHANC algorithm in the impulsive noise environment. To solve this problem, the maximum versoria criterion is incorporated into the HANC (MVC-HANC) algorithm in this paper. Firstly, the MVC-HANC algorithm employs a novel nonlinear function to compress the error signal. Secondly, the proposed algorithm uses the modified sigmoid function to constrain the reference signal. To further improve the noise attenuation performance, the MVC-HANC algorithm uses a novel exponential function to adjust the step-size adaptively. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has the better attenuation performance than the conventional HANC algorithm.

Adaptive signal processing algorithms for creating spatial zones of quiet

Available adaptive active noise control (ANC) algorithms can only minimize the noise level at a point that an error microphone is placed. Consequently, a zone of quiet around this microphone is produced as a byproduct. However, they cannot technically control or, even, monitor the noise level within the zone of quiet unless they use several sensors. They cannot also control the shape and the extension of the quiet zone by using only the error microphone. This paper develops a signal processing framework for the derivation of adaptive ANC algorithms that can directly create a controllable zone of quiet in monochromatic noise fields using a single error microphone. It is shown that by adding a filter to the standard ANC structure, a controllable zone of quiet is created. The transfer function of this filter is obtained using an accurate mathematical analysis. It is also shown that the extension of the zone of quiet can be controlled by tuning this filter. The implementation of the proposed system requires no additional hardware, rather than those required for traditional ANC systems. The validity of the results are discussed by using numerical analysis. Also, the performance of the proposed system is practically verified. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Analysis of narrowband active noise and vibration control systems using parallel adaptive notch filters

This paper analyzes narrowband active noise and vibration control (ANVC) systems using multiple second-order adaptive filters configured in parallel form with the filtered-x least mean square algorithm. Theoretical analysis of convergence of the algorithm is based on the autocorrelation and crosscorrelation matrices of the overall parallel structure. Analysis results show that extra harmonics are induced in the residual error because of using a single error signal to update all adaptive filters with different sinusoidal reference signals. An optimized filter-adapting method which uses bandpass filters to split the error signal into multiple bandlimited error signals according to frequencies of reference signals is proposed to improve the performance of narrowband ANVC systems in steady state. Computer simulations are conducted to verify analysis results and performance of the optimized narrowband ANVC system.

A robust evolutionary feedforward active noise control system using Wilcoxon norm and particle swarm optimization algorithm

The conventional filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm commonly employed for active noise control (ANC) is sensitive to disturbances acquired by the error microphone and yields poor performance in such scenario. To circumvent this problem, in this paper, a Wilcoxon fxlms (Wfxlms) algorithm is proposed and used in the design of an efficient ANC which is robust to outliers in the secondary path and immune to burst noise acquired by the error microphone. It is demonstrated through simulation study that under such situation the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional fxlms algorithm. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based robust ANC system, which does not require the modeling of the secondary path is also derived in the paper. Improved performance of the robust evolutionary ANC system over L2 norm based evolutionary ANC system is also shown. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
