In this paper, a novel adaptive energy and spectrum efficient inverse power control method that is based on the truncated filtered-x LMS (fxlms) algorithm is introduced. By truncated power control we mean power control where transmission is interrupted if the channel state deteriorates to bad enough. Inverse power control minimizes the interference that a cognitive radio (CR) creates to licensed users and allows more users to share the spectrum. To further reduce the transmission power and consequently the interference, truncation in power control is used. The performance of the system is improved and the amount of needed transmitted energy is smaller. Based on numerical analysis this new method offers energy efficient transmission, helps to minimize interference to the primary users, and allows even more users to share the same spectrum.

Noise pollution, in particular road traffic noise, is a growing concern. In general, noise reduction can be achieved at the source of noise emission, or by using anti-propagation or insulation measures. Measures at source are often the cheapest approach. This paper contributes to the development of enhanced environmentally-friendly vehicles by proposing an effective tire/road interaction noise mitigation method based on Active Noise Control (ANC). ANC methods can reduce the noise directly at the tires/road contact points by installing actuators (i.e. loudspeakers) inside the vehicle fenders. The proposed method will also reduce the noise propagating inside the vehicle and will hence eliminate the needs for passive noise reduction measures. As a result, the weight of the vehicles can significantly be reduced, thus requiring less resources for production and leading to an efficient fuel consumption during operation.

The virtual sensing technique allows the active noise control (ANC) system to work with error microphones that are placed far from the desired zone of quietness (ZoQ). Conventionally, a training stage is required to obtain the auxiliary filters with the temporary error microphones placed in the ZoQ. When the characteristics of the primary noise changes, the auxiliary filters have to be retrained. As a result, the conventional virtual sensing technique can only be used when the frequency band of the primary noise remains unchanged. In order to solve this limitation, this paper proposes a selective virtual sensing technique for the multi-channel feedforward ANC system. The selective virtual sensing technique obtains a bank of auxiliary filters in the subband structure. Based on the frequency-band-matching mechanism, a linear combination of the auxiliary filters is calculated and used in the realtime control stage. Experimental results show that the selective virtual sensing technique achieves better noise reduction performance than the conventional virtual sensing technique when the frequency band of the primary noise fluctuates.

Selective active noise control (SANC) is a method to select a pre-trained control filter for different primary noises, instead of using conventional real-time computation of the control filter coefficients. SANC has the advantage of improving the robustness of control filter while reducing the computational complexity. This paper presents a practical strategy in choosing a suitable control filter based on the frequency-band-match mechanism implemented in a partitioned frequency domain filter structure. Both simulation and real-time experiment are carried out validate the noise reduction performance of the SANC compared to the conventional fxlms algorithm.

This paper addresses identification of the cancelation path (CP) during the online operation of the feedback-type active noise control (ANC) systems. In the feedback-type ANC, a reference microphone cannot be installed to pickup the reference signal for the (adaptive) ANC filter. Therefore, an appropriate reference signal must be electronically generated. This requires availability of a good estimate of the CP. Furthermore, estimation accuracy of CP affects the stability and noise reduction of the ANC systems. The method proposed in this paper develops upon a previous work where two adaptive filters were used, one as ANC filter and the other as a cancelation path modeling filter (CPMF). The proposed method essentially comprises a similar structure as that of the previous method. The key objective here is to improve upon the slow convergence of CPMF. This in turn improves the noise reduction performance as demonstrated by numerical results presented in this paper.

The paper concerns active control of impulsive noise. The most famous filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm for active noise control (ANC) systems is based on the minimization of variance of error signal. The impulsive noise can be modeled using non-Gaussian stable process for which second order moments do not exist. The fxlms algorithm, therefore, becomes unstable for the impulsive noise. Among the existing algorithms for ANC of impulsive noise, one is based on the minimizing least mean p-power (LMP) of the error signal, resulting in FxLMP algorithm. The other is based on modifying;on the basis of statistical properties;the reference signal in the update equation of the fxlms algorithm. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is a modification and combination of these two approaches. Extensive simulations are carried out, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. It achieves the best performance among the existing algorithms, and at the same computational complexity as that of FxLMP algorithm.

We theoretically obtain the learning curves of the fxlms algorithm on the basis of statistical mechanical analysis. Cosines of angles between the coefficient vectors of an adaptive filter, its shifted filters, and an unknown system are treated as macroscopic variables. Assuming that the tapped-delay line is sufficiently long and exactly calculating the correlations between the past tap input vectors and the coefficient vector of the adaptive filter, we obtain simultaneous differential equations that describe the dynamical behaviors of the macroscopic variables in a deterministic form. We analytically solve the equations and show that the obtained theory quantitatively agrees with computer simulations. In the analysis, neither the independence assumption, the small step-size condition, nor the few-taps assumption is used.

This paper concerns about the theoretical stability of the adaptation process performed by the Filtered-x Least Mean Square (fxlms) algorithm in active control of acoustic noise. A dynamic model for the Variance of Residual Acoustic Noise (VRAN) is developed and it is shown that the stability of this model is a sufficient condition for the stability of the adaptation process. The basic rules governing the VRAN root locus are developed, based on which an upper-bound for the adaptation step-size is derived. This upper-bound can apply to a general case with an arbitrary secondary path, unlike the traditional upper-bound used in adaptive filter theory, which was derived only for pure delay secondary paths.

The filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm for active noise control (ANC) systems requires filtering of the reference signal via the cancellation path modeling (CPM) filter. The CPM filter may be available from the offline experiments. However, in many practical situations the online estimation of CPM filter may be needed due to the possible time-varying nature of the cancellation path. This paper investigates estimation of cancellation path during the online operation of the fxlms-based feedback-type ANC system. The key idea in the proposed approach is to employ a gain-controlled probe noise mixed with the cancelation signal. The gain-factor for the probe noise is adjusted such that a large-level probe signal is used during the transient state of the ANC system. This improves the convergence of the cancellation path estimation process. As the ANC system converges, the level of the probe noise is reduced to achieve a good noise reduction performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
