The Implementation of an Adaptive Electromagnetic Active Vibration Absorber for Multi-frequency Broadband Vibration Control

PurposeMulti-frequency vibration is challenging to control owing to the presence of multiple harmonic frequency components within a broad frequency band. This work aims to develop an adaptive electromagnetic active vibration absorber specifically designed for multi-frequency broadband vibration *** work begins by establishing the structure and dynamic model of the proposed active absorber. Two optimization objectives suitable for the dynamic output force are presented, and structural optimization design is then performed. To overcome the limitations of the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm in damping multiple narrowband disturbances, an improved adaptive control approach is proposed based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithm and reference signal self-reconstruction *** results demonstrate that the vibration responses at the natural frequency as well as under multi-frequency excitation can be rapidly and significantly attenuated. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed adaptive AVA are experimentally *** adaptive active control system that integrates the DWT algorithm and the reference signal self-reconstruction technique can achieve the suppression of multi-frequency harmonic excitations with unknown disturbances or sources within a broad frequency band through frequency division control.

Maximum versoria criterion applied to hybrid active noise control algorithm for the impulsive noise

In the conventional hybrid active noise control (CHANC) algorithm, the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm is used in both feedforward and feedback structures. However, the fxlms algorithm does not process the reference signal and the error signal before updating the weight vector, which leads to the inadequate robustness of the CHANC algorithm in the impulsive noise environment. To solve this problem, the maximum versoria criterion is incorporated into the HANC (MVC-HANC) algorithm in this paper. Firstly, the MVC-HANC algorithm employs a novel nonlinear function to compress the error signal. Secondly, the proposed algorithm uses the modified sigmoid function to constrain the reference signal. To further improve the noise attenuation performance, the MVC-HANC algorithm uses a novel exponential function to adjust the step-size adaptively. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has the better attenuation performance than the conventional HANC algorithm.

On the adaptive synchronous control of a large-scale dual-shaker platform system

There is an ever-increasing requirement for higher power vibrating platforms to test large-scale structures. Whilst this may be achieved with a single shaker, this is an expensive option. An alternative solution is to drive a platform with two or more smaller shakers. To do this effectively, however, requires the identical amplitude and phase response of the shakers. In practice, due to manufacturing tolerances and uneven loading, this is not possible without a control system. The design and implementation of such a system is the objective of this paper. An adaptive fxlms algorithm is used in the synchronous control of a dual-shaker system, considering the dynamic coupling between the shakers. A simulation is presented to verify the effectiveness of the control algorithm before the control system is integrated with practical a dual-shaker system driving a vibrating platform. It is shown that there are significant differences between the controlled and the uncontrolled system, demonstrating the efficacy of the control approach.

This paper focuses on identifying the secondary path (SP) in feedback active noise control (FBANC) systems during online operation. In FBANC, it's not feasible to install a reference microphone for capturing the reference signal needed for the (adaptive) active noise control (ANC) filter. Consequently, an appropriate reference signal is required to be electronically generated, necessitating an accurate estimation of the SP. The accuracy of SP estimation (SPE) directly impacts the stability and noise reduction capabilities of ANC systems. Building upon prior work that utilized two adaptive filters;one for ANC and another for SPE;this paper presents a method with a similar structure. The key idea in this paper is to tailor a generalized sigmoid function for developing a variable step-size (VSS)-based adaptive algorithm for (adaptive) ANC filter. The proposed method exhibits improved noise reduction performance as well as good SPE performance, as evidenced by the detailed numerical results provided in the paper.

We analyze the learning curves of the active noise control with a time-varying primary path using a statistical mechanical method. The cross-correlation between the element of a primary path and that of the adaptive filter and the autocorrelations of the elements of the adaptive filter are treated as macroscopic variables. We obtain simultaneous differential equations that describe the dynamical behaviors of the macroscopic variables under the condition that the tapped-delay line is sufficiently long. We analyze the case where the primary path has the Markovian property. As a result, we show that an optimal step size exists.

A Robust Feedback Active Noise Control System With Online Secondary-Path Modeling

In this letter, a robust feedback active noise control (FBANC) system with an online secondary-path modeling (OSPM) subsystem is proposed for suppressing sinusoidal noise signals. First, a decoupling scheme is proposed by using of an adaptive linear prediction filter (LPF) that takes the FBANC residual noise as its input and separates the remaining sinusoidal noise from the broadband noise that includes an inherent additive noise within the primary noise as well as a broadband component due to an auxiliary white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The remaining sinusoidal noise (LPF output) is used effectively not only to update the FIR controller but also to scale the AWGN, while the broadband noise (LPF error) serves as a desired signal for the OSPM. In this way, the hostile coupling between the FIR controller and the OSPM subsystem is significantly mitigated, leading to both faster system convergence and improved noise reduction performance (NRP). Second, a simple and practical scheme for refreshing the proposed FBANC system is also developed to enhance its robustness against even abrupt changes with the SP and/or the primary noise signal. Extensive simulations with synthetic and real secondary paths and noise signals are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed FBANC system.

Piezoelectric adaptive active vibration suppression for wind-tunnel model support sting

Due to flow separation and turbulence, the slender cantilever aircraft model support system is prone to low-frequency and large-amplitude resonance in the wind tunnel tests, resulting in a decrease in test data quality, a limited test envelope, and even threatening the safe operation of the wind tunnel. A piezoelectric active damping system based on the filtered-x least mean square algorithm is proposed to effectively suppress the vibration of the wind-tunnel model support sting. Firstly, a modified variable step least mean square algorithm is proposed to address the issue that the fixed-step algorithms limit each other in terms of convergence speed and steady-state error. Following that, a variable step filtered-x least mean square algorithm based on reference signal reconstruction is developed, and the corresponding feedback controller is designed to perform the ground tests of the piezoelectric active damping system for the wind-tunnel model support sting. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence speed and lower steady-state error than the traditional algorithms, as well as strong anti-noise and adaptive control abilities that significantly improve the active vibration suppression effect of the wind-tunnel model support sting.

Adaptive active vibration control for composite laminated plate: Theory and experiments

In this paper, an analysis model of adaptive active vibration control system of composite laminated plate using macro fiber composite (MFC) piezoelectric patches is presented, and the experimental testing is carried out. Electromechanical coupling equations of the composite laminated plate are established by considering the influence of the mass and stiffness of MFC piezoelectric patches. The adaptive active vibration control scheme for composite laminated plate based on the filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm is proposed. The accuracy of the present analysis model is validated by the results of experimental test and finite element method (FEM). It can be found that the vibration responses nearby the first and second natural frequencies of the composite laminated plate can be rapidly and greatly suppressed by the adaptive active control system and experimental test. Moreover, the dynamic responses of the composite plate under multi-frequency excitation and random excitation can be fast controlled by the presented adaptive active control system. The novelty of this work is that a theoritical analysis model of adaptive closed-loop control system based on the MFC piezoelectric patches is presented for vibration suppression of composite laminated plate, and the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive active model are validated by experimental testing.

A survey on filtered-x least mean square-based active noise control systems with emphasis on reducing computational complexity

Active noise control (ANC) is gaining ever-increasing attention owing to its powerful ability to attenuate low-frequency noise. The computational complexity of an ANC system may directly affect its computational efficiency, control performance, and hardware costs. Therefore, the focus of this paper is mainly on discussing the development of ANC systems with emphasis on reducing computational complexity. The ANC systems are classified into two groups of narrowband and broadband systems. The computational complexity analysis is provided to show the computational merit of each system with respect to the conventional ANC systems. In addition, numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the convergence speed and noise reduction performance of the considered systems. The results show that, in the narrowband ANC systems, the LFE-NANC, CFX-NANC and BFX-NANC systems enjoy better overall performance in terms of the computational complexity, convergence speed and steady-state error, and in the broadband ANC systems, the DF-BANC system has the lowest computational complexity but cannot effectively attenuate the broadband noise with high spectral dynamics, whereas the DS-BANC and MDS-BANC systems can. This study provides in-depth insight into current typical low-complexity ANC systems.

MIMO Multi-Frequency Active Vibration Control for Aircraft Panel Structure Using Piezoelectric Actuators

Undesirable vibration of aircraft panel structures has a significant impact on the safety of their occupants and the operational reliability of various systems. The traditional time-domain controller based on the parallel multi-frequency filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) control algorithm is simple and effective. However, the mutual influence of convergence steps and the induced harmonic components will limit its performance. An improved parallel multi-input multi-output multi-frequency fxlms (MIMOMF-fxlms) algorithm is proposed, considering the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control requirement of the aircraft panel structure active vibration control (AVC) system and its inevitable channel coupling phenomenon. The feedback error signal and the control channel model are processed by frequency division in the MIMOMF-fxlms algorithm, so that the fxlms algorithm of each control channel runs independently, effectively avoiding mutual interference between convergence steps and the generation of induced harmonic components. Simulation and experimental research on multi-frequency AVC of the panel structure model is performed using a new type of piezoelectric stack actuator. The test results show that the proposed controller reduces the vibration level of each observation point by more than 98%, and the vibration responses of the first two-order frequency component are significantly suppressed, which also has strong adaptability and anti-noise ability.
