Improving robustness of filtered-x least mean p-power algorithm for active attenuation of standard symmetric-α-stable impulsive noise

The paper concerns active control of impulsive noise having peaky distribution with heavy tail. Such impulsive noise can be modeled using non-Gaussian stable process for which second order moments do not exist. The most famous filtered-x least mean square (fxlms) algorithm for active noise control (ANC) systems is based on the minimization of variance (second order moment) of error signal, and hence, becomes unstable for the impulsive noise. In order to improve the robustness of adaptive algorithms for processes having distributions with heavy tails (i.e. signals with outliers), either (1) a robust optimization criterion may be used to derive the adaptive algorithm or (2) the large amplitude samples may be ignored or replaced by an appropriate threshold value. Among the existing algorithms for ANC of impulsive noise, one is based on the minimizing least mean p-power (LMP) of the error signal, resulting in FxLMP algorithm (approach 1). The other is based on modifying;on the basis of statistical properties;the reference signal in the update equation of the fxlms algorithm (approach 2). In this paper we propose two solutions to improve the robustness of the FxLMP algorithm. In first proposed algorithm, the reference and the error signals are thresholded before being used in the update equation of FxLMP algorithm. As another solution to improve the performance of FxLMP algorithm, a modified normalized step size is proposed. Active Control of Structurally Radiated Sound from an Elastic Cylindrical Shell

A numerical and experimental study was presented on active control of structurally radiated sound from an elastic cylindrical *** analytical model was developed for the active structural acoustic control (ASAC) of the cylindrical *** global and local control strategies were *** optimal control forces corresponding to each control strategy were obtained by using the linear quadratic optimal control *** simulations were performed to examine and analyze the control performance under different control *** results show that global sound attenuation of the cylindrical shell at resonance frequencies can be achieved by using point force as the control input of the ASAC *** control performance can be obtained under the control strategy of minimization of the radiated sound ***,control spillover may occur at off-resonance frequencies with the control strategy of structural kinetic energy minimization in terms of the radiated sound *** levels of global sound attenuation can also be achieved in the on-resonance cases with the local control strategy,i.e.,minimization of the mean-square velocity of finite discrete *** ASAC experiment using an fxlms algorithm was implemented,agreement was observed between the numerical and experimental results,and successful attenuation of structural vibration and radiated sound was achieved.

This paper analyzes the effects of frequency error in internal signal generator for narrowband active noise control systems. Two stability conditions and the optimum step-size to achieve the minimum excess mean-square error are analyzed in the paper. The noise reduction is formulated as a function of frequency mismatch, step size, and phase error in the estimation of the secondary path. The theoretical analysis presented in the paper is verified by computer simulations.

This paper discusses a novel adaptive algorithm termed variable step size and variable leakage factor filtered-x least-mean-square (VSSVLfxlms) algorithm for applications in active vibration control (AVC). For such applications, the leaky filtered-x LMS (Lfxlms) algorithm has been considered for stability purposes. However, when the standard Lfxlms algorithm (with fixed leakage) is used, the control performance is strongly dependent on the selected leakage value. A similar result is noticed concerning the chosen step-size value. Thus, by using the proposed VSSVLfxlms algorithm better step-size and leakage values are obtained, improving considerably the control performance. The conjectures of this work are confirmed by implementing the referred algorithm in an experimental setup of an AVC system.

This paper presents a statistical analysis of the filtered-x LMS algorithm about the steady-state solution. Analytical models are derived for the mean weight-error vector and the mean square error behaviors which are simpler than existing models. The simpler models allow the determination of new convergence and steady-state results that should prove useful for design purposes. Simulation results display excellent agreement between theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo simulation results. Examples show that the new theory can be used to predict both transient and steady-state behaviors of the fxlms algorithm in active control of sound and vibration.

Analysis of narrowband active noise and vibration control systems using parallel adaptive notch filters

This paper analyzes narrowband active noise and vibration control (ANVC) systems using multiple second-order adaptive filters configured in parallel form with the filtered-x least mean square algorithm. Theoretical analysis of convergence of the algorithm is based on the autocorrelation and crosscorrelation matrices of the overall parallel structure. Analysis results show that extra harmonics are induced in the residual error because of using a single error signal to update all adaptive filters with different sinusoidal reference signals. An optimized filter-adapting method which uses bandpass filters to split the error signal into multiple bandlimited error signals according to frequencies of reference signals is proposed to improve the performance of narrowband ANVC systems in steady state. Computer simulations are conducted to verify analysis results and performance of the optimized narrowband ANVC system.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate a modified adaptive step-size algorithm and implement an active noise control (ANC) system. It is well known that there is a tradeoff between steady state error and convergence rate depending on the step size. This study shows that the new algorithm can track changes in the dynamic characteristics of the ANC system as well as produce a low steady state error. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the new algorithm to the basic least mean square (LMS) algorithm. Although there have been several studies of adaptive step-size algorithms, no quantitative analysis has yet been reported for real time active noise control application as far as the authors know. Experimental results are presented for a duct system. The results indicate that the new algorithm provides better performance than the fixed step-size filtered-X least mean square (fxlms) algorithm.
