This paper proposes a fault detection scheme for microgrids with grid-forming inverters. In this paper, a superimposed phase-current scheme with a voltage-restraint element is proposed which identifies the faults in an islanded microgrid with grid-forming inverters. In the proposed method, different factors including the implemented fault-ride-through strategy, the fault current limiting scheme, and the control structure of the grid-forming inverter are considered. Furthermore, the moving window concept is included, which considerably increases the detection speed. The severity and type of short circuit fault do not affect the functionality of the proposed method, and both symmetrical/asymmetrical short circuit faults are properly identified by the proposed scheme. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by applying different symmetrical/asymmetrical faults in a test system.

This paper presents a fast fault detection scheme based on mathematical morphology (MM), which is a nonlinear signal transformation tool in a time-domain, in order to avoid the damage on diodes of power electronic devices in low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution networks. The MM is utilized to extract abnormal features from fault currents when short circuit faults with capacitive discharging characteristic or high impedance faults (HIFs) with arcing phenomenon occur in the network. The presented scheme utilizes a dilation erosion difference filter (DEDF) and closing opening difference filter (CODE) for detecting capacitive discharging current from the AC/DC converter and arc current with repetitive extinction and re-ignition, respectively. The two filters work in a coordinated way to meet the critical fault detection time (CFDT) for preventing damages on diodes in the AC/DC converter and avoid unfavorable tripping by applying different length of structuring element (SE). The framework for using the proposed scheme including a guideline for selecting the SE for each filter is also presented to make the best use of the proposed scheme. The presented scheme is implemented using the electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) and computer simulations are conducted on a test last mile radial LVDC distribution network.

This paper addresses the diagnosis of open-switch fault in pulse-width modulation (PWM) power converter based on insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) used in doubly-fed induction generator-direct current (DFIG-DC) system. The fault diagnosis is carried out by analyzing the rotor currents within healthy and faulty operation conditions. In the new proposed configuration of DFIG connected to DC-bus, the diode rectifier is employed to connect the stator windings to the DC-bus and the PWM power converter is employed to connect the rotor windings to the DC-bus. The main goal of using a PWM power converter is to keep the stator voltage and frequency constant at rated values. In this regard, the various experimental results for open-circuit faults are obtained by using dSpace DS1104 control board. Some experimental results are obtained, proving the effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis approach such as low detection time and high robustness against false alarms.

Adaptive fault compensation for global performance tracking control of sensor faulty MIMO nonlinear systems with unmeasured states

In this article, the problem of global prescribed performance tracking control for multi-input multi- output (MIMO) nonlinear systems with sensor faults and unmeasured states is investigated. By constructing a state observer that incorporates an adaptive sensor fault compensation mechanism, the impact of the loss of sensor effectiveness is alleviated through the cubic absolute-value Lyapunov function analysis method. Based on several transformation functions and a time-varying scaling function, the tracking errors are restricted within the global prescribed performance without the constrained initial conditions. Considering the abrupt change in tracking errors due to the existence of sensor faults, a monitoring function to supervise the excessive loss of sensor effectiveness is designed. Furthermore, a novel reconfigurable controller can be constructed with the detected fault time instant and the global prescribed performance. The analysis demonstrates that all signals remain bounded and the tracking errors are maintained within the designed global prescribed performance regardless of sensor faults. Finally, the efficacy of the presented control scheme is demonstrated by the simulation results.

Multi-attribute Bayesian fault prediction for hidden-state systems under condition monitoring

Although Bayesian approaches have been utilized in engineering systems for health prognostics, very little work has been done using Bayesian methods for fault prediction of systems under multiple attributes. To address this issue, in this paper a novel multi attribute Bayesian control chart is presented for predicting failures of hidden-state systems by jointly considering two performance measures of system operation. The system actual status is represented by a three-state multivariate hidden stochastic process with a normal state, an abnormal state, and a failure state. The working states are unobservable and failure state is observable. Based on the built hidden-state model, a fault prediction scheme integrating both system availability and cost objectives is constructed via a multi-attribute Bayesian control chart to monitor and predict impending risks of the operational systems. The Bayesian control chart alarms when the probability of impending risks reaches a certain control limit, which is optimized and determined by a computational algorithm developed in a semi-Markov decision process framework. The proposed fault prediction scheme provides an appearing feature to jointly consider multiple attributes for hidden-state systems. A real case study of mechanical generators is presented and a comparison with other Bayesian and non-Bayesian methods is also given, which demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. A reliable fault detection algorithm for distribution network with DG resources

The natural disaster though may have less probability, but their impact can be extreme. For instance, windstorms can result in not only single instantaneous impact, but on multiple locations in the power grid. In such situations, detection of faults in active distribution networks (ADNs), having integration of different types of distributed generation (DG) resources, further escalates the challenging task for existing conventional techniques. The reliability of existing detection schemes is further compromised in case of high impedance faults (HIFs). This paper presents a unified approach for reliable detection of both low-impedance and high-impedance faults, while maintaining the discrimination against non-fault events. In the proposed detection algorithm, the fault detection index is calculated using a newer version of empirical mode decomposition (EMD), i.e., improved complete ensemble EMD with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN). The performance is demonstrated for detection of multiple faults occurrence at different locations in the ADN. It is shown that with selection of uniform threshold value for all the relays in the network, only the dedicated primary and back-up relays operate reliably at the time of fault conditions. The scheme exhibits accurate, fast and reliable operation as compared to available works in the literature.

Sample entropy-based fault detection for photovoltaic arrays

Despite the growing deployment of photovoltaic (PV) systems, they are still facing challenges in developing the proper control and protection schemes. One of the main protection challenges of PV arrays is their low fault currents under low-irradiance, low-mismatch, and high-impedance faults. In addition to these conditions, the operation of the maximum power point tracking algorithm may lead to the faults within the PV array remain undetected, resulting in potential fire hazards and power loss. This study presents a fault detection scheme based on monitoring the output power of the PV array. Using the sample entropy-based complexity, the irregularity of the time series of the normalised fault-imposed component of PV power is quantified as the fault detection criterion. The proposed protection scheme is capable of distinguishing the line-to-line, line-to-ground, and open-circuit faults from the weather disturbances and partial shadings. Also, it does not require the training dataset and the prior information about the PV array and is effective for both grid-connected and islanded PV systems. Extensive time-domain simulation results demonstrate high accuracy of the proposed fault detection scheme.

Novel fault detection schemes for sequence time-domain reflectometry (STDR) and spread-spectrum time-domain reflectometry (SSTDR) are proposed, which improve, the detection performance of far faults without increasing the computational complexity by positioning a sign detector at the front of the time correlator. Simulation results demonstrate that the detection performances of the proposed schemes for far faults are considerably better than those of the conventional ones regardless of sequence lengths and reference types.

In current semiconductor and TFT-LCD factories, periodic sampling is commonly adopted to monitor the stability of manufacturing processes and the quality of products (or workpieces). As for those non-sampled workpieces, their quality is usually monitored by such as a fault-detection-and-classification (FDC) server. However, this method may fail to detect defected products. For example, a workpiece with all the individual manufacturing process parameters being in-spec may still result in out-of-spec product quality. Under this circumstance, unless this certain defected workpiece is selected for sampling by chance, it cannot be detected by simply monitoring the manufacturing process parameters collected from the production equipment To solve the abovemendoned problem, this research proposes a product quality fault detection scheme (FDS), which utilizes the classification and regression tree to implement a model for identifying the relationship between process parameters and out-of-spec products. Through this model, each set of normal manufacturing process parameters can be real-time and on-line examined to detect failure or defected products.

Motion fault detection and isolation in Body Sensor Networks

Significant amount of research and development is being directed on monitoring activities of daily living of senior citizens who live alone as well as those who have certain motion disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. A combination of sophisticated inertial sensing, wireless communication and signal processing technologies has made such a pervasive and remote monitoring possible. Due to the nature of the sensing and communication mechanisms, these monitoring sensors are susceptible to errors and failures. In this paper, we address the issue of identifying and isolating faulty sensors in a Body Sensor Network that is used for remote monitoring of daily living activities. We identify three different types of faults in a Body Sensor Network and propose fault isolation strategies using history-based and non-history based approaches. The contributions of this paper are: (i) faulty sensor node identification in a small number of deployed body sensors (accelerometers);and (ii) identification of a faulty sensor node using a statically or dynamically bound group of sensor nodes that is sharing similar sensor signal patterns.
