feature-oriented programming (FOP) is a programming technique to implement software product lines based on composition mechanisms called refinements. A software product line is a set of software systems that share a common, managed set of features satisfying the specific needs of a particular market segment. The literature reports various software metrics for software product lines developed using object-oriented and aspect-oriented programming. However, after a literature review, we observed that we lack the definition of FOP-specific metrics. Based on this observation, this paper proposes a set of eight novel metrics for feature-oriented programming. These metrics were derived both from our experience in FOP and from existing software metrics. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed metrics by applying them to a software product line.

feature-oriented programming (FOP) is a programming technique based on composition mechanisms, called refinements. It is often assumed that feature-oriented programming is more suitable than other variability mechanisms for implementing Software Product Lines (SPLs). However, there is no empirical evidence to support this claim. In fact, recent research work found out that some composition mechanisms might degenerate the SPL modularity and stability. However, there is no study investigating these properties focusing on the FOP composition mechanisms. This paper presents quantitative and qualitative analysis of how feature modularity and change propagation behave in the context of two evolving SPLs, namely WebStore and MobileMedia. Quantitative data have been collected from the SPLs developed in three different variability mechanisms: FOP refinements, conditional compilation, and object-oriented design patterns. Our results suggest that FOP requires few changes in source code and a balanced number of added modules, providing better support than other techniques for non-intrusive insertions. Therefore, it adheres closer to the Open-Closed principle. Additionally, FOP seems to be more effective tackling modularity degeneration, by avoiding feature tangling and scattering in source code, than conditional compilation and design patterns. These results are based not only on the variability mechanism itself, but also on careful SPL design. However, the aforementioned results are weaker when the design needs to cope with crosscutting and fine-grained features. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose an approach to perform data flow testing of feature-oriented programs. In our approach, we use a data flow model to represent flow of data across the mixin layers and classes. The model is represented as a control flow graph named composed control flow graph (CCFG). The CCFG depicts flow of control between various program statements. Then, we define different levels of testing to test a feature-oriented program inside a mixin layer and across mixin layers. Then, we compute def-use pairs for each variable in the program and design test cases randomly to exercise each def-use pair.

Family-Based and Product-Based Development of Correct-by-Construction Software Product Lines

Software product lines provide systematic software reuse to implement whole product families efficiently. Therefore, they are increasingly used to handle the growing demand of custom-tailored software variants including safety-critical systems as a domain of application. The requirements for safety-critical systems are generally higher and often demand for behavioral correctness to reduce the risk of dangerous situations in-field. However, the high variability of software product lines is still a big challenge for formal methods in general. We argue that the stepwise development approach correctness-by-construction is beneficial compared to post hoc verification approaches in dealing with the growing variability. Correctness-by-construction uses a set of refinement rules to incrementally create a correct program from a formal specification. In previous work, we already introduced variational correctness-by-construction to develop correct-by-construction software product lines in a product-based way. In this article, we extend our approach in three directions. First, we propose a feature-based specification technique matching the fine-grained specifications of correctness-by-construction. Second, we propose a family-based development approach to show the correctness of the product line as an alternative to the previous product-based approach. Third, we present our usability-improved tool VARCORC implementing our approach. In the evaluation, we compare the product-based development approach to the family-based approach using two case studies implemented with VARCORC.

The incremental advancement of sensor technology has positively impacted the field of activities of daily living (ADL) recognition and monitoring in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) environments. People in AAL environments interact by means of electronic devices (e.g., sensors, actuators, mobile phones, tablets, wearable technologies) to accomplish their ADL, which can be analysed to identify such as ADL and monitor the behaviour of inhabitants in AAL. In this paper, we present the trends on this area in the context of Pervasive Healthcare. To do so, we propose a categorization of ADL, along with the monitoring approaches based on sensing and context-awareness technologies. Moreover, we present an overview of evaluation models on the extent of performance of ADL.

A DSL-Based Approach for Detecting Activities of Daily Living by Means of the AGGIR Variables

In this paper, we propose a framework for studying the AGGIR (Autonomie Gerontologique et Groupe Iso Ressources-Autonomy Gerontology Iso-Resources Groups) grid model, with the aim of assessing the level of independence of elderly people in accordance with their capabilities of performing daily activities as well as interacting with their environments. In order to model the Activities of Daily Living (ADL), we extend a previously proposed Domain Specific Language (DSL), by defining new operators to deal with constraints related to time and location of activities and event recognition. The proposed framework aims at providing an analysis tool regarding the performance of elderly/disabled people within a home environment by means of data recovered from sensors using a smart-home simulator environment. We perform an evaluation of our framework in several scenarios, considering five of the AGGIR variables (i.e., feeding, dressing, toileting, elimination, and transfers) as well as health-care devices for tracking the occurrence of elderly activities. The results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed framework for managing the tracked records correctly and, thus, generate the appropriate event information related to the ADL.

A software product line comprises a set of products that share a common code base, but vary in specific characteristics called features. Ideally, features of a product line are developed in isolation and composed subsequently. Product lines are increasingly used for safety-critical software, for which quality assurance becomes indispensable. While the verification of product lines gained considerable interest in research over the last decade, the subject of how to specify product lines is only covered rudimentarily. One challenge is composition;similar to inheritance in object-oriented programming, features of a product line may refine other features along with their specifications. In our work [1], we present a comprehensive discussion and empirical evaluation of how to specify product lines implemented by means of feature-oriented programming. In feature-oriented programs, implementation artifacts, such as methods, are distributed over the set of feature modules and subsequently composed together when the respective features are selected. Similar to this idea, contracts could be modularized, too, and are subsequently composed together with their respective methods. In particular, we investigate how refinement and composition of such specifications can be established and derive a notion of feature-oriented contracts comprising preconditions, postconditions, and framing conditions of a method (i.e., following the design-by-contract paradigm). While both design by contract and feature-oriented programming have been hot research topics for more than two decades, their combination had rarely been explored. When features refine methods, an important question is whether refinement of their contracts is inevitable or not. However, unlike method composition where only the order of features is relevant, it seems that contract composition has to be handled differently according to certain scenarios. Software product lines are increasingly used to handle the growing demand of custom-tailored software variants. They provide systematic reuse of software paired with variability mechanisms in the code to implement whole product families rather than single software products. A common domain of application for product lines are safety-critical systems, which require behavioral correctness to avoid dangerous situations in-field. While most approaches concentrate on post-hoc verification for product lines, we argue that a stepwise approach to create correct programs may be beneficial for developers to manage the growing variability. Correctness-by-construction is such a stepwise approach to create programs using a set of small, tractable refinement rules that guarantee the correctness of the program with regard to its specification. In this paper, we propose the first approach to develop correct-by-construction software product lines using feature-oriented programming. First, we extend correctness-by-construction by two refinement rules for variation points in the code. Second, we give a proof for the soundness of the proposed rules. Third, we implement our technique in a tool called VarCorC and show the applicability of the tool by conducting two case studies.

features are pieces of core functionality of a program that is relevant to particular stakeholders. features pose dependencies and constraints among each other. These dependencies and constraints describe the possible number of variants of the program: A valid feature configuration generates a specific variant with unique behavior. feature-oriented programming is used to implement features as program units. This paper introduces rbfeatures, a feature-oriented programming language implemented on top of the dynamic programming language Ruby. With rbfeatures, programmers use software product lines, variants, and features as first-class entities. This allows several runtime reflection and modification capabilities, including the extension of the product line with new features and the provision of multiple variants. The paper gives a broad overview to the implementation and application of rbfeatures. We explain how features as first-class entities are designed and implemented, and discuss how the semantics of features are carefully added to Ruby programs.
