As a general-purpose simulation framework, HLA has been widely used in the field of distributed interactive simulations. Based on the systematical description of three major components of High Level Architecture (HLA) and using a combination way of theory and practice, the paper focused on the application of federation development and execution process Model (FEDEP) method in tactical communication simulation training federation. Combining with the FEDEP process model, key steps of federation target, conception model, development, integration and test and etc of tactical communication simulation training were designed, which lied good foundation for realization and federation-level reuse of tactical communication simulation training federation.

A form of design guidance is offered through a process that applies Axiomatic Design Theory to Component-Orientation. Axiomatic Design has been proposed by Do and Suh for object-oriented software development. Our approach leverages divide-and-conquer and find-integrate techniques that support service-based development as an alternative to developing code from scratch. Using this process, missing or conflicting components can be identified, and missing components can be defined. The effectiveness of our proposed system is demonstrated through an example based on High Level Architecture (HLA) simulations. Our Component-Oriented approach utilizing axiomatic design theory has been adapted to HLA federation development and execution process (FEDEP). As one of the Component-Oriented approaches proposed, FEDEP is able to obtain interoperability and reusability of available components, namely Federates. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The trailblazer project was created to examine the application of a federation of simulations to joint experimentation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Trailblazer federation. The paper is organized by the steps of the federation development and execution process (FEDEP). The FEDEP is a systems engineering process for the development of federations of simulations using the High Level Architect (HLA) and was used as the roadmap for development of the Trailblazer federation. Lessons learned are presented for each step of the FEDEP, and a summary presents overall observations on the usefulness of the FEDEP and the HLA in the joint experimentation domain.
