Container transport is the major way of freight transportation. In order to assure the safe freight transportation and examine the cargo container non-intrusively for contrabands, the radiation detection technology has been utilized more during last decade. One of the challenging issues in the non-intrusive scanning technology is to improve the scanning speed which can improve the allowable speed of the target. This paper proposes implementation of fast non-intrusive scanning scheme through gamma ray detection using network of 40 field programmable gate array (FPGA) modules. The proposed system is implemented using four Spartan2, 50k gates (FPGA) modules. A real time radiographic image of container is obtained on computer screen, clearly showing the density of the contents of container. Each FPGA module acquires the 16 channel data simultaneously with sampling rate of 52 kilo sample per second (KSPS). The proposed speed of the target is limited to maximum of 46 m/min.

A Color Space Conversion Engine is a digital image-processing pipeline, which requires frequent reconfiguration of some, but not all of its stages. Therefore, it is a digital signal processing system that presumably can take advantage of dynamic partial reconfiguration. This paper describes the necessary design changes, testing, and performance analysis of a color space conversion engine implemented onto a field programmable gate array using dynamic partial reconfiguration. The analysis provides insight into the operational scenarios in which dynamic partial reconfiguration is advantageous or not.

In the present study, a data acquisition system for a GEM one-dimensional array detector is presented. The detector system is to measure the trajectory of photoelectrons produced by cosmic rays. The GEM array detector for the present project has 16 signal channels. The front-end unit provides timing signals from trigger units and energy signals from charge sensitive amplifies and pulse shapers. The timing signals and the energy signals are fed to the time-to-digital converter (TDC) units and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) units respectively. The TDC is to measure the time interval between time marks provided by the front-end unit for trajectory information. The measurement of the pulse height for particle energy information is using an amplitude to time convertor (ATC).

This paper describes the embedded system used to store and transfer large amounts of data in a multichannel data acquisition system for the GEM detector. The stored data is used for diagnostics purposes. System consists of an embedded mini ITX motherboard connected through the PCI Express (PCIe) link to a backplane FPGA. The backplane FPGA is connected through the SerDes/GTP links to (up to) 4 carrier boards. Each carrier board is connected to (up to) 4 FMC modules. System allows for a high speed data transfers between the ITX motherboard and the backplane or carrier modules. Due to high performance/reliability requirements, special care is taken for a proper data error correction/packet retransmission scenarios. There is also need for a proper communications diagnostics and a system addressing abstraction. Due to a distributed nature of described data acquisition system, data stored in DDR memory has to have a specific structure. This structure allows for a proper synchronisation of data between all the carrier boards.

This paper describes our 1.06um pulsed laser source which has the capability to generate pulses with tunable durations from picoseconds to nanoseconds. This is made possible through the use of a high speed field programmable gate array (FPGA) board to generate the required pulses/ any arbitrary waveforms. The FPGA codes are specially designed to generate very fast rise/fall times waveforms with the flexibility to vary both the pulse duration and pulse frequency in real time. These custom defined waveforms are then used to generate high intensity laser pulses when connected to a 1064nm fiber laser source. These tunable pulsed laser sources have potential industrial applications in precision laser micro machining, where the high thermal intensity of the laser pulses can be used to perform ablation, cutting, drilling or annealing of processed materials. Furthermore, by able to tailor the shape of the delivered laser pulses, this will lead to reduction in processing time, improves the efficiency of material removal and the quality of the end product. Our custom board can generate arbitrary tailored pulses as short as 200ps and the longest pulse is 200ns. The pulse repetition rate can be tuned from 20 kHz to 1MHz.

Classifying Microarray data, which are of high dimensional nature, requires high computational power. Support Vector Machines-based classifier (SVM) is among the most common and successful classifiers used in the analysis of Microarray data but also requires high computational power due to its complex mathematical architecture. Implementing SVM on hardware exploits the parallelism available within the algorithm kernels to accelerate the classification of Microarray data. In this work, a flexible, dynamically and partially reconfigurable implementation of the SVM classifier on field programmable gate array (FPGA) is presented. The SVM architecture achieved up to 85x speed-up over equivalent general purpose processor (GPP) showing the capability of FPGAs in enhancing the performance of SVM-based analysis of Microarray data as well as future bioinformatics applications.

A permanent magnet synchronous motor fuzzy control drive system based on field programmable gate array is proposed in this paper. This system has the high-precision control characteristic, which is hard for the traditional permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system to achieve. In this system a magnetic field oriented vector control with a zero excitation current is used, and three feedback loops consisting of current loop, velocity loop and position loop are used to build three fuzzy proportional integral controllers with fuzzy control method. The reliability and the dynamic of system performance can be improved by this method. The experimental results show that this system has advantages of high-precision control characteristic and enhancing the system robustness.

Sphere Decoding (SD) algorithm has emerged as a highly effective detection scheme for Multiple-Input Multiple-output (MIMO) systems. It offers a near maximum likelihood accuracy with reduced complexity. Despite this, there is a constant demand of even low complexity SD algorithms. This paper presents the FPGA implementation of Schnorr-Euchner SD algorithm with Early Termination (ET) scheme for uncoded multiple-input multiple output system. The ET scheme reduces the complexity of the decoder. The proposed decoder is designed for 4x4 Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) MIMO system. The trade-off between the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance and the computational complexity is discussed. To compute the computational complexity synthesis of the proposed design is done on Xilinx Virtex 5 XC5VLX30T and Spartan 6 XC6SLX25T. An exhaustive comparison on the basis of resources utilized and frequency (MHz) at which the design can run is done on both the FPGAs.
