Hardware emulation based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform is vital to harness the power of quantum parallelism. As resource requirement grows exponentially in classical modeling quantum system, an optimum hardware architecture is crucial to emulate practical quantum circuits. Quantum Fourier transform (QFT) finds application in several critical quantum algorithms. In this work, experiments are conducted based on QFT to identify suitable qubit representation and hardware design technique. Experimental results show that 24-bit fixed point representation and serial architecture achieve optimal computation accuracy and resource utilization in QFT circuit emulation.

When attempting to make a design fit a set of the heterogeneous resources found in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), designers using High-Level Synthesis (HLS) may resort to approximate approaches. However, current FPGA-oriented approximate HLS tools do not allow specifying constraints on heterogeneous resources such as lookup tables, flip-flops, and multipliers, being instead error-oriented. In this work, we propose a resource-oriented HLS methodology with which designers can specify heterogeneous resource constraints and satisfy them while minimizing the output error, attaining average improvements, over error-oriented approaches, of about 34% and 2.2 dB for mean-squared error and peak signal-to-noise ratio error metrics, respectively.

Emerging applications in the wireless domain such as factory automation or extended reality require high reliable and deterministic communications. New scheduling mechanisms introduced in current state-of-the-art Wi-Fi (i.e. 802.11ax, 802.11be) offer better performance, but in many cases not sufficient to meet the requirements of the aforementioned applications. In this paper, we present a hardware implementation of Scheduled Time-Sensitive Transmission Opportunity (S-TXOP) over Wi-Fi. S-TXOP provides accurate time synchronization and time-aware scheduling to enable highly efficient deterministic wireless communications. We describe a field-programmable gate array software-defined radio S-TXOP implementation, and show numerical and experimental results supporting low cycle time transmissions with determinism.

In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been increasingly popularized across various fields, posing security challenges that necessitate effective detection methods. Most existing radio frequency (RF)-based UAV detection methods are data-driven, whose performance can be limited by the factors such as incomplete datasets, hardware constraints, etc. In this regard, we propose a data-free UAV detection method by analyzing the periodicity of UAV signals in this paper. First, the short-time Fourier transform is employed to cast the originally captured signals into the time-frequency domain, where both the image transmission signal (ITS) and the flight control signal (FCS) of UAVs can be extracted. Then, the signal encodings of both ITS and FCS are developed by evaluating energy accumulations with the specially designed sliding window functions. As such, the Pearson correlation coefficients of UAV signals among different time segments can be calculated to assess the periodicity of ITS and FCS, which can be utilized for UAV detection. The proposed method eliminates the necessity for extensive prior knowledge of UAV signal datasets, encompassing bandwidth, duration, and frequency details. Moreover, we implement our methodology on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), underscoring its practical applicability, and the experiments are carried out to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to the deep learning-based methods.

Smart Antennas can adaptively adjust their radiation pattern to form nulls towards the interference sources and form maximum radiation towards the desired users. This paper presents an assessment on the effectiveness of an adaptive beamforming algorithm for an electrically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) smart antenna system by comparing resultant radiation patterns after beamforming process, with and without a 10 dBm interference signal. An adaptive beamforming algorithm based on simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) was implemented in a vector signal transceiver (VST) with real-time signal processing field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based software defined radio (SDR) capability.

Due to the massive research attention of modular multi-level converter (MMC)-based power conversion in the high-voltage and medium-voltage applications, there have been great demands in rapid validation of its control and protection strategies. Real-time simulation is an eligible choice that can fulfill a fast, safe and low-cost validation in the early-stage development of the MMCs. However, the performance of the MMC real-time simulation relies on both the modeling accuracy and the simulation speed, which can be very cumbersome to meet simultaneously due to the enormous switches in the converter. In order to improve the simulation accuracy while retaining computing efficiency, in this paper, a novel device-level real-time simulation approach is proposed for MMC. By using the efficient network decoupling techniques and piecewise linear transient switch models, the nonlinear switching transient can be effectively integrated into the MMC real-time simulation. A three-phase five-level MMC is used as a case study and simulated in the National Instrument FlexRIO FPGA module. A 100 ns real-time simulation time-step is realized. The simulation results have shown a very good agreement with the results of Saber simulation tool. Moreover, by implementing the software-in-the-loop real-time simulation, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated.

A binary convolutional neural network (BCNN) accelerator using a nonvolatile field-programmable gate array (NV-FPGA) with only-once-write shifting is presented. During the basic operation of the BCNN, the feature maps and weights are read from the block RAM (BRAM) and serially transferred to processing elements. The use of only-once-write shifting makes it possible to greatly reduce write power consumption such serial data transfer in the NV-FPGA. Meanwhile, since the BCNN computing is composed of the nested loop, the memory access potentially has a temporal locality. This means that once the data is read from the BRAM, it can be reused among several layers. By focusing this feature and performing loop interchange, the number of memory access can be minimized and the idle time is maximized. If the BRAM is nonvolatile, wasted standby energy consumption during idle state is completely eliminated by the use of power gating technique. As a result, the proposed BCNN accelerator is 66.5% lower energy consumption than a conventional volatile-FPGA-based BCNN accelerator in typical digit recognition task with MNIST dataset.

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a subclass of deep neural network that has gained popularity in recent years. CNN has revolutionized the execution of tasks such as natural language processing, image classification, and voice recognition. However, the performance of CNNs is often limited by the hardware available for training large sets of data. Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) have been shown to achieve good performance with CNN-based applications, however, GPU is expensive and is not suitable for all applications. In recent years, and for various reasons researchers have shifted their focus to field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and even other edge devices like microcontrollers to execute CNN models. This paper provides a survey of a number of applications where FPGAs are used in the implementation of various CNN-based models. The survey provides the reader with a compact and informative insight into recent efforts in this domain.

This paper proposes an all digital speed and step size adaptive maximum power point tracker (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) power generation, supporting the power supply of vehicles. To harvest significant amounts of energy in this application the MPPT has to deal with fast changing irradiance and severe shading. It has to achieve high tracking speed while maintaining tracking errors below 1 %. The presented modified perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm meets these requirements by applying digital filtering to detect the settling of the input voltage automatically. This enables minimal sampling time for each situation and, hence, very fast convergence to the maximum power point (MPP). The developed algorithm has been implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and verified with an experimental setup. It achieves about 9 kHz average switching frequency while maintaining a tracking accuracy above 99.8 %.

Traditional License Plate Positioning (LPP) systems always utilize complex structures, resulting in low processing speed. In this paper, we propose an identification system for vehicle license plates based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The improved Sobel edge detection algorithm is applied to conduct image preprocessing, and the watershed algorithm is used to identify the plates. This leads to a simplified system structure and a higher speed for the plates identification. This system uses a camera to collect image information, the FPGA to conduct image reception and processing, and a monitor to display the identification results. After debugging and executing, the design is proved to be of high performance, and is capable of applying to practical engineering projects.
