filtered multitone (FMT) modulation divides the communication band into several subbands to shorten the span of symbols affected by multipath in underwater acoustic (UWA) communications. However, there is still intersymbol interference (ISI) in each subband of FMT modulation degrading communication performance. Therefore, ISI suppression techniques must be applied to FMT modulation UWA communications. The suppression performance of traditional adaptive equalization methods often exploited in FMT modulation UWA communications is limited when the effect of ISI spans tens of symbols or large constellation sizes are used. Turbo equalization consisting of adaptive equalization and channel decoding can improve equalization performance through information exchanging and iterative processes. To overcome the shortcoming of traditional minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization and effectively suppress the ISI with relatively low computation complexity, an FMT modulation UWA communication using low-complexity channel-estimation-based (CE-based) MMSE turbo equalization is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, turbo equalization is first exploited to suppress the ISI in FMT modulation UWA communications, and the equalizer coefficients of turbo equalization are adjusted using the low-complexity CE-based MMSE algorithm. The proposed method is analyzed in theory and verified by simulation analysis and real data collected in the experiment carried out in a pool with multipath propagation. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better communication performance with a higher bit rate than the FMT modulation UWA communication using traditional MMSE adaptive equalization.

With the vigorous development of the navigation industry, the VDES(VHF Data Exchange System) has received extensive attention from various research institutions. In order to solve the multipath fading problem in VHF wireless channel transmission, this paper integrates FMT (filtered multitone modulation) technology into VDES ground subsystem, redesigns the system time slot structure under the protocol framework, constructs the underlying communication link of VDES ground subsystem based on FMT. Simulation results show that the performance of the system using FMT technology is slightly better than that using OFDM technology, and the spectrum utilization and frequency offset resistance are improved. Research demonstrates that the introduction of FMT into VDES can effectively solve the multipath interference problem and has certain value for the practical application of VDES.

The multipath spread in underwater acoustic channels is severe and, therefore, when the symbol rate of the time reversal (TR) acoustic communication using single-carrier (SC) modulation is high, the large intersymbol interference (ISI) span caused by multipath reduces the performance of the TR process and needs to be removed using the long adaptive equalizer as the post-processor. In this paper, a TR acoustic communication method using filtered multitone (FMT) modulation is proposed in order to reduce the residual ISI in the processed signal using TR. In the proposed method, FMT modulation is exploited to modulate information symbols onto separate subcarriers with high spectral containment and TR technique, as well as adaptive equalization is adopted at the receiver to suppress ISI and noise. The performance of the proposed method is assessed through simulation and real data from a trial in an experimental pool. The proposed method was compared with the TR acoustic communication using SC modulation with the same spectral efficiency. Results demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the performance of the TR process and reduce the computational complexity of adaptive equalization for post-process.

The filtered multitone (FMT) modulation can be seen as a simple extension of the OFDM modulation. Indeed, it can be efficiently realized as a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)-based transceiver. However, to avoid a significant increase of its computational complexity the FMT has to be implemented with short prototype filters. In this paper we propose explicit expressions to compute such short prototype filters. The corresponding closed-form expressions of the prototype filter coefficients are obtained for two different optimization criteria: out-of-band energy and time-frequency localization. In both cases it is shown that these quasi-optimal results correspond to linear-phase prototype filters.

On the basis of analyzing the theory of filtered multitone modulation (FMT) and the characteristics of FMT's ISI, this paper presents a kind of subchannel blind equalization structure used in FMT system as well as a novel variable step size blind equalization algorithm (VS-MCMA) based on the modified constant modulus algorithm (MCMA) to alleviate the contradiction between MCMA's convergence speed and steady-state error. Simulation results indicate that comparing with the performance of MCMA, the subchannel blind equalization can perfectly eliminate ISI and the proposed algorithm can simultaneously improve convergence speed by one time and reduce the steady-state error.

We address the synchronization problem in a filtered multitone (FMT) modulated system. An FMT based system differs from the popular OFDM scheme in the deployment of sub-channel shaping filters. We assume a multiuser uplink scenario where sub-channels are partitioned among the active users. Users are asynchronous such that the received signals experience independent time offsets, carrier frequency offsets, and multipath fading. We propose to recover symbol/frame timing and carrier frequency for each active user by exploiting the sub-channel separability with an iterative procedure that uses training sequences. Two synchronization metries are described. Detection uses simple linear sub-channel equalizers with RLS training.

In this paper we analyze a recently proposed concatenated multitone system for application in the asynchronous multiple access channel (wireless uplink). We study the robustness of the scheme to the users' time offsets, carrier frequency offsets, and channel time/frequency selectivity. A comparison with multiuser OFDM and MC-CDMA is reported which shows that increased robustness and better performance can be achieved with the proposed scheme. It is based on the concatenation of an inner filtered multitone (FMT) modulator with transmission over multiple antennas, and an outer space-time cyclically prefixed discrete multitone (ST-CP-DMT) modulator. The inner modulator is used to efficiently realize frequency division multiplexing of the users by partitioning the FMT sub-channels among them. The outer modulator copes with the residual sub-channel intersymbol interference and it further implements a form of transmit diversity. Frequency and space diversity is exploited via direct sequence (DS) data spreading across the DMT tones.

Several modem communication systems are based on multicarrier transmission. In this contribution, some multicarrier transmission concepts are analyzed, which enable a reliable data transmission in spite of typical disturbances (intersymbol interference, interchannel interference, noise disturbances). Different equalizer strategies (e. g. data-directed equalization) in combination with different pulse shaping concepts (e. g. filtered multitone modulation and wavelet-packet modulation) are investigated under non-ideal channel conditions. The results show, that the equalizer has to take both disturbances (intersymbol and interchannel interference) in a multicarrier system into account, in order to obtain useful results.
