Wavelet filtering algorithm for fan-beam CT

To date, all wavelet computed tomography (CT) work has been based on the assumption of a parallel-beam geometry. The authors directly formulate wavelet CT based on the fan-beam geometry, using recently developed theory for wavelet filtering in filtered backprojection. Experiments with clinical raw projection data demonstrate the feasibility and utility of the approach.

Design of optimal symmetric FIR receive filters

A method for designing optimal symmetric odd-length finite impulse response digital receive filters is proposed. The filter jointly minimises the mean power of intersymbol interference and additive noise or interference under the constraint that the filter coefficients are symmetric. The method yields exactly symmetric filters with the same performance as the earlier unconstrained design but with a lower computational complexity.

Nonlinear narrowband interference canceller in DS spread spectrum systems

A nonlinear interference canceller structure, which combines a nonlinear adaptive filter with a memoryless nonlinear limiter, is investigated. A more realistic narrowband interference model is used in which the interference is considered as a digitally modulated signal. Simulation results indicate that the nonlinear interference canceller offers significant advantages over conventional nonlinear filters.

The joint probabilistic data association filter is used for angle tracking of multiple moving targets. To improve the performance, in terms of data association, this filter uses power measurements, in addition to angle measurements. These measurements are provided by the MUSIC algorithm. The tracking performance of the algorithm is assessed by Monte Carlo simulations using different trajectories.

Time-varying complex spectral analysis via recursive APES

APES (Amplitude and Phase EStimation) is an adaptive FIR filtering approach introduced recently for complex spectral estimation. For stationary signals, APES can yield more accurate spectral estimates than the widely used Capon and FFT estimators. The authors present a recursive APES algorithm for time-varying spectral analysis, which is computationaly efficient and only involves FFT and simple matrix operations. The recursive APES algorithm is applied to ISAR (inverse synthetic aperture radar) imaging and feature extraction of targets with complex manoeuvring motion. Both numerical and experimental examples are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

High quality digital PAL decoding for single frames

A software-based method for obtaining high quality colour single frames from a PAL signal is described. A two-dimensional finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter extracts the subcarrier from the composite source. Chrominance demodulation is by orthogonal free-running subcarriers followed by vector rotation of the U and V components by reference to the demodulated burst vector. The system is also applicable to NTSC.

Fuzzy logic approach to manoeuvring target tracking

The authors describe an extension to the interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm using a fuzzy logic framework. Each Kalman filter is considered to be locally valid, applicable over a region of the target acceleration space defined by the filter conditioning value. The validity of each Kalman filter is determined using fuzzy sets and an estimate of the target acceleration. With suitable choice of the fuzzy set overlap, only a subset of models close to the acceleration estimate need be evaluated. Simulation results are included for a typical manoeuvring target scenario which illustrate the effect of different forms of fuzzy sets. These confirm that the approach compares favourably with IMM in terms of both estimation accuracy and computational load.

Algorithm for removing DCT noise patterns in block encoded images

A novel post-processing technique is presented which reduces DCT noise patterns in block coded images. The proposed technique first estimates the DCT noise patterns across the image, then reduces this particular distortion by appropriate filtering. The simulation results show that the proposed technique provides good subjective qualities.
