Joint spatial registration and multi-target tracking using an extended probability hypothesis density filter

An extended probability hypothesis density filter for translational measurement registration and multi-target tracking (MTT) is proposed. The number and states of the targets and the biases of the sensors are jointly estimated by this method without the data association. The sequential Monte Carlo method is used to implement the proposed algorithm considering non-linear and non-Gaussian conditions. Monte Carlo simulation results show that the proposed method (i) outperforms, although computationally a little more expensive than, the standard PHD filter which does not involve the process of spatial registration;(ii) outperforms the multi-sensor joint probabilistic data association (MSJPDA) filter which is also extended in this study for joint spatial registration and MTT when the clutter is relatively dense.

Sparsity regularised recursive least squares adaptive filtering

The authors propose a new approach for the adaptive identification of sparse systems. This approach improves on the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm by adding a sparsity inducing weighted l(1) norm penalty to the RLS cost function. Subgradient analysis is utilised to develop the recursive update equations for the calculation of the optimum system estimate, which minimises the regularised cost function. Two new algorithms are introduced by considering two different weighting scenarios for the l(1) norm penalty. These new l(1) relaxation-based RLS algorithms emphasise sparsity during the adaptive filtering process, and they allow for faster convergence than standard RLS when the system under consideration is sparse. The authors test the performance of the novel algorithms and compare it with standard RLS and other adaptive algorithms for sparse system identification.

Incremental object matching and detection with Bayesian methods and particle filters

This study is about object matching, that is, a problem of locating the corresponding points of an object in an image. Conventional approaches to object matching are batch methods, meaning that the methods first learn the object model from a training set of example images that contain instances of the object, and then use the learned object model to match instances of the same object (or object class) in unseen test images. Such batch learning often leads to computationally heavy learning, at least when the images are incorporated sequentially into the system and large memory requirements. In computer vision, little work has been done in developing incremental object learners. Especially, an incremental object-matching method has to the best knowledge of the authors - never been introduced. In this paper, the authors present such a method. Our technique finds the corresponding points of similar object instances, appearing in natural greyscale images with arbitrary location, scale and orientation, by processing the images sequentially. The approach is Bayesian and combines the shape and appearance of the corresponding points into the posterior distribution for the location of them. The posterior distribution is recursively sampled with particle filters to locate the most probable corresponding point sets in the image being processed. The results indicate that the matched corresponding points can be used in forming a representation of the object with which instances of the object in novel test images are successfully detected.

Reconfigurable baseband processing architecture for communication

The development of multiple communication standards and services has created the need for a flexible and efficient computational platform for baseband signal processing. Using a set of heterogeneous reconfigurable execution units (RCEUS) and a homogeneous control mechanism, the proposed reconfigurable architecture achieves a large computational capability while still providing a high degree of flexibility. Software tools and a library of commonly used algorithms are also proposed in this paper to provide a convenient framework for hardware generation and algorithm mapping. In this way, the architecture can be specified in a high-level language and it also provides increased hardware resource usage. Finally, we evaluate the system's performance on representative algorithms, specifically a 32-tap finite impulse response (FIR) filter and a 256-point fast Fourier transform (FFT), and compare them with commercial digital signal processor (DSP) chips as well as with other reconfigurable and multi-core architectures.

Highly selective and tunable microwave photonic filter using parallel Fabry-Perot filters for universal mobile telecommunications system noise and interference suppression

The authors propose a highly selective and tunable microwave photonic filter based on parallel Fabry-Perot filters with fibre Bragg gratings for delay. The filter is suitable for noise and interference suppression in universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) base stations. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of these filters in UMTS applications, and also show flexibility in their frequency response. Tunability of the filter has been employed for UMTS channel selection and grating length has been tuned in order to achieve appropriate delay. The filter provides a very high selective performance (in the frequency range of 1937-1976 MHz and a very high-quality factor of 494) with very high sidelobe suppression (>36 dB) in the stop band with lesser number of components. Tunability and reconfigurability of the proposed filter was obtained by changing the grating length. In this way, easy implementation of simple, compact and cost-effective filter has been demonstrated.

Adaptive scalar and vector median filtering of noisy colour images based on noise estimation

To address the problem of removing impulsive noise with different density from colour images, a new filtering algorithm is proposed based on noise estimation as well as adaptive scalar (SMF) and vector median filter (VMF). Two-level noise estimation scheme is adopted for noise detection, where the first-level estimation is based on maximum and minimum intensity value of each colour channel, and the second-level estimation uses weighted directional operators. For noise restoration, the uncorrupted pixels are remained unchanged, and the corrupted pixels of low-to-medium density are restored by the double weighted VMF, where the term double weighted means that the pixels' spatial distance and magnitude value are weighted together for the vector ordering in the computation of vector median filtering. In addition, the corrupted pixels of high density are restored by the SMF based on M estimator and the neighbourhood processed pixels. According to the estimated noise density, the proposed SMF and VMF are switched adaptively. The experimental results show that the new algorithm can filter the noise effectively while protecting the image colour, contrast and fine details well for the impulsive noise of different density (even as high as 99%).

Fast recursive Gauss-Newton adaptive filter for the estimation of power system frequency and harmonics in a noisy environment

This study presents a new recursive Gauss-Newton method-based adaptive filter for estimating the time-varying amplitude, phase, and frequency of fundamental and harmonic components of power system voltage or current corrupted by noise. The coefficients of the adaptive filter are obtained from unconstrained optimisation of an error function weighted by a variable forgetting factor, and using suitable approximation of the recursive Gauss-Newton algorithm for reducing computational complexity. To improve the tracking speed and accuracy of the filter, the forgetting factor is tuned iteratively. This approach is very much suitable for a large variety of applications in the distributed generation control and protection, synchronised phasor measurement of voltage and current signals using phasor measurement units, power electronic converters etc. Several computational issues like the time-varying nature of the power system voltage and frequency parameters, noise and distortion, presence of decaying dc and inter-harmonics are considered to evaluate the fast operation and robustness of the proposed approach.

Digital fractional delay implementation based on fractional order system

This study presents a design method of the digital fractional delay operator z(-m) for 0 < m < 1, in a given frequency band of interest, using digital infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The design technique is based on the approximation of the fractional order systems. First, analogue rational function approximation, for a given frequency band, of the fractional power pole (FPP) is given. Then the forward difference generating function is used to digitise the FPP to obtain a closed-form IIR digital filter, which approximates the digital fractional delay operator z(-m) for 0 < m < 1. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method. The proposed technique has also been used to design a comb filter. The results obtained have been discussed and compared with some of the most recent work in the literature.

Particle filter to track multiple people for visual surveillance

A particle filter (PF) has been recently proposed to detect and track colour objects in video. This study presents an adaptation of the PF to track people in surveillance video. Detection is based on automated background modelling rather than a manually generated object colour model. Furthermore, a labelling method is proposed to create tracks of objects through the scene, rather than unconnected detections. A methodical comparison between the new PF tracking method and two other multi-object trackers is presented on the PETS 2004 benchmark data set. The PF tracker gives significantly fewer false alarms owing to explicit modelling of the object birth and death processes, while maintaining a good detection rate.

General framework of the construction of biorthogonal wavelets based on Bernstein bases: theory analysis and application in image compression

The authors present a general framework of the construction of biorthogonal wavelets based on Bernstein bases along with theory analysis and application. The presented framework possesses the largest possible regularity, the required vanishing moments and the passband flatness of frequency response of filters. Based on this concept, the authors establish explicit formulas for filters of biorthogonal wavelets with arbitrary odd lengths. Meanwhile, a new family of parametric filters with symmetry is constructed. The choice of filter bank in wavelet compression is a critical issue that affects image quality. In this study, an optimal model of FIR aiming at image compression is brought forward, and the optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filters can be obtained correspondingly through sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and genetic algorithm (GA). The authors demonstrate the performance of the new family of filters given in this study for image compression with very encouraging results.
