Single channel 224 Gbit/s (56-GBaud) PAM-16 transmission using linear digital pre-distortion

With linear digital pre-distortion (DPD) and 8-bit digital to analogue converter (DAC), a single channel 224 Gbit/s (56-GBaud) 16-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-16) signal is experimentally transmitted over a 100 m standard single-mode fibre (SSMF) for the first time using intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD). The 3 dB bandwidth of the whole system is around 22 GHz, which is far below the bandwidth of the 56-GBuad PAM-16 signal. The strong inter-symbol interference caused by the limited system bandwidth is pre-compensated by the proposed linear DPD technique. The experimental results indicate that the linear DPD process can effectively avoid the noise enhancement by the aggressive feed-forward equalisation at the receiver, and also improves the system performance at the cost of additional finite impulse response filter at the transmitter.

Iterative Fourier filtering approach for phase-retrieval holography based on autocorrelation theorem

The Misell algorithm is an effective phase-retrieval holography method for measuring the surface error of large reflector antennas. However, it is investigated experimentally to have a low accuracy at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To decrease the great sensitivity to noise of Misell algorithm, a new iterative Fourier filtering approach based on autocorrelation theorem is proposed. The iterative Fourier filtering approach is used to remove some of the imperfection present in far-field amplitude data. The computer simulation results of Shanghai Sheshan-25m-telescope model show that the proposed approach improved the accuracy of Misell algorithm at low SNR obviously.

Image quality assessment employing joint structure-colour histograms as quality-aware features

Image quality assessment is of fundamental importance for various image processing applications. A novel method is presented in which the joint occurrences of statistical local representation by log-Gabor filters and texture analysis by local tetra patterns and histograms of colour are considered as quality-aware features. Then the dissimilarities of these features between the distorted and reference images are quantified and mapped into quality score prediction by utilising a support vector regression. Extensive experiments on LIVE, CSIQ and TID databases show that the proposed method is remarkably consistent with human perception and outperforms many state-of-the-art methods, and also it is robust across different distortion types and different databases.

Circularly polarised filtering monopole antenna based on miniaturised coupled filter

This Letter proposes a circularly polarised (CP) monopole antenna with filtering function, which is achieved by integrating a miniaturised coupled filter based on the bent-loop resonators. The circular-polarisation is obtained by using the falcate-shaped patch as the radiation part, and the existence of the coupled filter in the feeding line would not affect the CP radiation performances. Both numerical simulation and experimental demonstration are performed for the designed CP filtering antenna, and good agreements are obtained. The designed antenna with dimension of 70 x 75 mm(2) exhibits good frequency selective performances for the return loss, gain and axial ratio at 2.45 GHz with measured impedance matching bandwidth (vertical bar S-11 vertical bar < 10 dB) of 0.23 GHz. Such CP filtering antenna is a good candidate for the emerging application area, e.g. wearable biotelemetric devices.

The problem of quality assessment of screen content images from two respects is addressed, the edge-preserving filter based free energy and structural degradation model. For screen content images which always contain texts, edge information plays an important role in the process of evaluating the screen images quality. Inspired by this, the edge-preserving filter based free energy entropy and structural degradation model were combined to extract the quality features and accordingly the statistical model of screen content images was established. Experimental results prove that the proposed method can produce highly consistent with human perception, particularly superior to state-of-the-art full-and no-reference quality metrics on the SIQAD database dedicated to the quality assessment of screen images.

Empirical mode decomposition based on instantaneous frequency boundary

A method for the adaptive signal decomposition by using the frequency boundary information is proposed. This is achieved by the high-order derivative operation that could extract the frequency-domain boundary between the highest frequency portion and the rest parts of signal by using the proper order value and a subsection filtering method based on fast Fourier transform. Simulations show that the proposed method performs better in frequency resolution, modal aliasing than empirical mode decomposition, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD).

Motion compensation on baseline oscillations for distributed array SAR by combining interferograms and inertial measurement

Distributed array synthetic aperture radar (DASAR), in which multiple distributed antennas are mounted on a crosstrack, has applications that include multibaseline interferometry, multiple-input multiple-output SAR, and tomography. However, this flexible imaging geometry requires accurate measurement of the movements of each antenna. High-precision navigation systems are commonly used, but configuring a separate navigational system for each antenna is challenging and costly. In this study, the authors proposed a novel motion compensation scheme for DASAR that combines inteferograms and inertial measurement. The authors fabricated a rigid baseline (RB) and multiple flexible baseline (FB) configuration, fitted with a large and accurate position and orientation system and with multiple smaller, low-precision inertial navigation systems (INS) for motion measurement. The authors introduced a new robust algorithm based on a function relating RB and FB interferometry, and used this to estimate the relative movements. Finally, a Kalman filter was designed to integrate the results of databased estimation and inertial measurement. This combined the strengths of data estimation for slow movement and inertial measurement for fast movement. The results of both simulations and airborne experiments confirmed the success of this novel approach in allowing a small INS to be used for motion compensation in DASAR applications.

Alternative framework for the iterated unscented Kalman filter

The iterated version of a family of non-linear Kalman filters, named the unscented transform (UT) based unscented Kalman filters (UKF), are revisited. Two existing frameworks of the iterated UKF are analysed and some shortcomings of them are pointed out. A new framework is proposed based on the statistical linear regression (SLR) perspective of the UT and the framework of the iterated extended Kalman filter (IEKF). The virtue of the proposed framework is twofold: first, the observation equation is linearised strictly following the SLR perspective implying that the regression error is also considered;second, it strictly follows the framework of the IEKF implying that in each iteration, the linearised equation is used to correct the a priori estimate rather than the latest estimate. A simple but illustrative benchmark example is simulated to check the feasibility of the proposed framework, and the results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework.

PIAPF for manoeuvring target tracking in the presence of multiplicative noise

In this study, a prediction-interval-based adaptive particle filter (PIAPF) is developed to track a manoeuvring target in the presence of multiplicative measurement noise. In PIAPF, input augmentation technique is utilised to estimate the state variables of target and unknown inputs (manoeuvres) simultaneously. To cope with unknown sudden changes of system state variables (caused by manoeuvres), the covariance matrix of the importance density function is adaptively adjusted based on the prediction interval of the output estimation. In addition, a theorem is developed which confirms that the output estimation error is upper bounded by a given probability. The likelihood function of the non-stationary state-dependent error of sensors, which is modelled as multiplicative noise, is then obtained for weight calculation of PIAPF. The proposed PIAPF is then used to track a manoeuvring target in a wireless sensor network with distance-measuring sensor nodes. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PIAPF in terms of tracking accuracy and computational load.

Event-triggered non-fragile H∞ filtering of linear systems with a structure separated approach

Considering filter gains with additive interval variations, this study is devoted to the non-fragile H-infinity filtering of linear systems with an event-triggered transmission. To take into account the influence of these variations thoroughly, a structured vertex separator is adopted to alleviate the computation burden. Combining the Finsler lemma, conditions of designing the non-fragile filter to ensure the required H-infinity performance are formed by linear matrix inequalities. Compared to the norm-bounded method to handle the variations, the proposed method could provide less conservative results. Simulations are executed to show the validity of the proposed method.
