Design method for FIR-based Hilbert transform filters suitable for broadband AM-SSB

A new synthesis approach to the design of finite impulse response (FIR) filters with a close approximation to the Hilbert transform for AM-SSB generation of wideband signals is discussed. It is shown that the new method can reduce the vestigial sideband by up to 59% compared with that obtained with a conventional FIR filter design method.

Quantisation noise control in perceptual audio coding using low selectivity filter banks

The problem of computing, in a subband audio coder, the maximum quantisation noise power that can be injected in each band to ensure transparent coding when low selectivity filter banks are used, is addressed. A low complexity strategy, taking into account the frequency responses of the synthesis filter bank, is proposed for achieving an overall distortion due to quantisation noise always below the masking threshold (provided by a psycho-acoustic model) for any length prototype filters.

Image retrieval using VQ-based local Gabor feature

A new method of retrieving images from large image databases is proposed. The method is based on vector quantisation (VQ) of local texture information extracted by a Gabor wavelet filter bank at interest points automatically detected in an image. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a trademark image database and compared with the performance of some existing methods.

Some new properties are derived for the state-transition matrix (A(kl)(mn)) of an linearly periodically time-varying (LPTV) 2D filter (period (M, N)) that are useful in the analysis of LPTV 2D state-space structures. In particular, a simple method is presented to decompose A(kl)(mn);and analytic expressions are derived for the z-transform of both A(kl)(mn), and its sub-sampled counterpart, A(kl)(mM+p,nN+q).

Adaptive probability estimation based on IIR filtering method

A technique for adaptive estimation of source symbol probabilities is introduced, based on an infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering method. Symbol probabilities are estimated efficiently by means of exponential weighting, and used in conjunction with arithmetic coding. Experimental results indicate that better compression is achieved than with other comparable probability estimation methods.

By exploiting the PR function as a postfilter, a new adaptive structure is proposed that removes the effects of the PR zeros and shows drastic improvement in performance over the prefilter approach.

Low-cost digital adaptive antenna architecture combined with low-sidelobe beam synthesis

The explosion of growth seen in the past decade in the mobile telephony market has meant that the electronic components used in the manufacture of mobile terminals are now mass produced, with a commensurate fall in unit cost. By exploiting the functionality of such components in phased array antenna design a truly low-cost phased array antenna can be realised. An array antenna architecture is presented that exploits low-cost component technologies. A low-cost architecture for enabling an adaptive, or smart, capability is developed. By separation of the beamforming function and spatial adaptive processing function into two separate signal paths an undersampling technique can be used to provide low-cost spatial processing. The performance of an adaptive processing algorithm is investigated for a radar application. Simulations applied to array element patterns measured on a 16-element linear array demonstrate the performance of the antenna in sidelobe suppression and interference cancellation/spatial filtering. A penalty function approach for sidelobe suppression is applied and is shown to enable flexibility between adaptive cancellation of interference and overall sidelobe level.

Nested median filtering for detecting T-wave offset in ECGs

Capabilities of a nonlinear signal decomposition method based on nested median filters for electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis are demonstrated. This method is comparable to linear scale-space filtering in terms of computation cost but outperforms it with regard to detection accuracy of characteristic points of ECGs (e.g. the T-wave offset). Obtained results are validated on the CSE database of ECGs.
