Fast and accurate measurement of harmonic parameters employing hybrid adaptive linear neural network and filtered-x least mean square algorithm

This study proposes a novel algorithm for fast and accurate measurement of fundamental, harmonics, sub- and inter-harmonic parameters of a distorted current signal with additive noise. A novel hybrid technique called adaptive linear neural network and filtered-x least mean square (ADALINE-FXLMS) algorithm is employed for amplitude and phase estimation. The ADALINE-FXLMS algorithm is the advancement of ADALINE least mean square (ADALINE-LMS) algorithm. With the help of this proposed algorithm, the adaptive step-size parameter is expanded up to the upper-bound limit that results in further improvement of system stability. The convergence behaviour of the mean square errors for the noisy input signal is derived in details. By applying the proposed algorithm, the dynamic and steady-state response are analysed with different signal-to-noise ratio values. The simulated results obtained from the proposed algorithm are compared with the results generated by the variable step-size ADALINE-LMS algorithm in order to demonstrate the tracking capability. Finally, a laboratory prototype model is developed to justify the efficacy of the analytical results. The motivation of applying the proposed hybrid algorithm is due to its successful implementation in a real-time environment, faster convergence and simplicity structure.

Enhanced high dynamic-range image rendering using a surround map based on edge-adaptive layer blurring

Many tone-mapping methods have developed efficient tone compression and local contrast enhancement techniques for high dynamic-range imaging. Local tone mapping enhances the image quality to reveal the details;however, it causes artefacts such as halos. Halo artefacts appear around the edges of an image and lead to deterioration in the overall image quality. Detail-base separation and multi-scale methods have been developed to reduce halo artefacts. Detail-base separation methods divide the image into a detail layer and base layer using an edge-preserving filter and process each layer independently. Multi-scale methods alleviate artefacts such as halos, noise, and awkward global toning using a weighted sum of single-scale images. These methods have several inherent problems including the complexity of the edge-preserving filter and multi-processing redundancy. Therefore, in this study, a novel surround map is presented to resolve halo artefacts and enhance local details in single-scale processing.

Context-based prediction filtering of impulse noise images

A new image denoising method for impulse noise in greyscale images using a context-based prediction scheme is presented. The algorithm replaces the noisy pixel with the value occurring with the highest frequency, in the same context as the replaceable pixel. Since it is a context-based technique, it preserves the details in the filtered images better than other methods. In the aim of validation, the authors have compared the proposed method with several existing denoising methods, many of them being outperformed by the proposed filter.

Efficient filtering structure for spline interpolation and decimation

An efficient structure for spline-based fractional delay filtering for interpolation/decimation is introduced. Inspired by the Newton structures for Lagrange interpolation, it requires less than half the number of operations of a typical Farrow implementation. Moreover, it displays better frequency response characteristics than Lagrange-based filters. To obtain this structure, a matrix form of the Farrow transfer function is proposed and used to derive state-space transformations between the Lagrange-Farrow structure and its Newton counterpart. These transformations are then applied to the spline polynomial, giving rise to the efficient Newton-like spline filtering method.

An incremental least-mean M-estimate algorithm is proposed for distributed network, which minimises a robust M-estimator-based cost function against impulsive noise via the gradient descent method. Moreover, based on the same frame for implementation, an incremental distributed least-mean p-power algorithm is presented for combating impulsive noise. Simulations verify the superiority of the proposed algorithms in the presence of impulsive noise relative to some existing incremental distributed algorithms.

Sparse SM-NLMS algorithm based on correntropy criterion

A sparse set-membership normalised least mean square (SM-NLMS) algorithm with a correntropy penalty is proposed and its performance is investigated for estimating a sparse echo channel. The proposed sparse SM-NLMS algorithm is derived by minimising an unconstraint cost function that utilises the correntropy on the weight vector as well as the sum of a symmetric and positive definite matrix constrained Euclidean norm of the differences between the instantaneous error and the upper bound of the SM filtering. Simulation results over a sparse echo channel show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the existing algorithms with respect to the steady-state misalignment.

Robust spatiotemporal stereo against image motion and temporal disparity variation

When there exists camera motion as well as scene motion, the position and disparity of a pixel in an image sequence temporally vary with time. Such image motion (IM) and temporal disparity variation (TDV) degrade the performance of spatiotemporal stereo matching. In this Letter, a robust spatiotemporal similarity measure that addresses IM and TDV is proposed. To this end, an irregular spatiotemporal window whose temporal windows are located by a TDV value and optical flows is designed. In addition, a spatiotemporal guided filter-based aggregation technique using temporal weights based on temporal proximity and flow reliability is presented. To handle a large number of labels effectively, a search range reduction method for finding a probable label set is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields consistent and accurate disparity maps under IM and TDV.

A new methodology for interference/jamming suppression employing a spatial filter measurement matrix (SFMM) is presented. Different from the previous Capon beamforming method, the proposed method is not dependent on accurate prior information of targets' directions-of-arrival (DOAs). The proposed SFMM suppresses the noise and interferences outside the searching area, thus apparently improves detection performance. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SFMM.

The processing of signals defined over domains modelled as graphs is becoming a fast emerging area of research. A graph filter bank allows for the wavelet transform on graph signals that is similar to the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for regular domain signals. Localisation is an important property of the transform and the most localised DWT is with the Haar wavelets. Spectral graph filters that are highly localised is constructed. These filters can be considered as the counterparts to the Haar filters in DWT.

Compact filtering slot antenna with frequency agility for Wi-Fi/LTE mobile applications

A reconfigurable filtering slot antenna (filtesnna) for Wi-Fi/LTE mobile systems is proposed. The reconfigurable filtesnna is based on integrating a switchable bandpass filter inside the feeding line of a slot antenna structure. This design is achieved by using an open/short-ended inter-digital E-shaped patch via two integrated pin diodes within its structure. The proposed filtesnna has a small size of 0.25 lambda(0) x 0.1 lambda(0) (lambda(0) is the free-space wavelength at 2.1 GHz). The filtesnna is designed at centre frequencies of 2.1/2.4 GHz with measured 10 dB return loss impedance bandwidths from 2.03 to 2.17 GHz or 2.37 to 2.51 GHz when the diodes are ON or OFF, respectively. A prototype of the reconfigurable filtesnna has been fabricated and measured. A good adaptation is acquired between the simulated and the measured results.
