Very-low-complexity concurrent error detection for transform-based filters

A very-low-complexity concurrent error detection technique for filters implemented in the frequency domain using the fast Fourier transform and the overlap-add method is presented. The proposed approach checks the first or last sample of every output block by comparing it with the equivalent value calculated in the time domain. The check requires only one additional multiplication per output block. Thus, the computational complexity of the check is negligible. It is shown that the method is capable of detecting a significant percentage of errors.

Automatic detection of active sweat pores of fingerprint using highpass and correlation filtering

A new technique is introduced for the automatic extraction and location of active sweat pores in a fingertip image. The combined technique includes highpass filtering followed by correlation. Results are presented for a fingertip image obtained using a high-resolution micro-capture camera. This automated method of detecting active sweat pores will help to implement liveness detection in existing fingerprint sensors.

Uniformly most powerful invariant detection in spherically invariant random vector distributed clutter

This study deals with the problem of detecting a radar target with unknown complex amplitude in the presence of clutter modelled as a spherically invariant random vector (SIRV). It is proved that, under a quite mild technical condition, the normalised matched filter (NMF) is the uniformly most powerful invariant (UMPI) detector in SIRV disturbance. The developed proof is based on the theory of total positive functions of order two.

Fractal-shaped UWB bandpass filter based on composite right/left handed transmission line

An ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter is presented, with excellent passband performance and improved out-of-band sharpened rejection. It is constructed with Koch island-shaped stepped impedance lines and a composite right/left handed transmission line synthesised by etching a Koch fractal-shaped ring slot in the ground plane and a series capacitive gap in the conductor strip. The equivalent circuit model of the proposed structure is presented and the electrical parameters are also extracted. The UWB filter is designed and implemented to experimentally demonstrate the enhanced performance. Numerical and measurement results show that good performance, such as low return and insertion loss over the UWB passband and sharpened rejection skirts outside the UWB passband, is achieved. Furthermore, the structure is compact in size.

In this study, the problem of designing regular robust l(2)-l(infinity) filter for a class of linear singular discrete-time systems with norm-bounded uncertainties is investigated. A class of regular linear filters is fully analysed, then necessary and sufficient conditions of robust admissibility are established. Guaranteed l(2)-l(infinity) performance of the filtered system is provided and expressed in terms of the solution of strict linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The cases of full- and zeroth-order realisable filter are derived as limiting cases of design. Numerical examples are worked out to illustrate the theoretical development.

Real-time implementation of mixture particle filter for 3D RISS/GPS integrated navigation solution

An optimised real-time realisation of a mixture particle filter (PF) integrated 3D navigation system for land vehicles based on Global Positioning System (GPS) and Reduced Inertial Sensors System (RISS) is introduced. The PF is a nonlinear filter that can handle errors and uncertainties. Although a mixture PF decreases the number of particles compared to a sampling/importance resampling (SIR) PF, the implementation on embedded systems needs further optimisation to run at higher rates. Introduced is an optimised real-time implementation of a mixture PF on a 600 MHz ARM processor. The optimisation is based on fast median-cut clustering to reduce the complexity of search in the weighting step. The proposed real-time system was tested on a real mobile robot trajectory, showing fast and accurate performance.

Adaptive sharpening of depth maps for 3D-TV

Depth maps, which can be represented as greyscale images, are used to aid rendering of novel views in three-dimensional (3D) video systems. However, compressing them using existing video codecs, such as H.264/AVC, leads to low quality rendered views. Presented is a sharpening method based on adaptive bilateral filtering to eliminate certain artifacts observed in compressed depth maps to improve the quality of rendered views. Experimental results demonstrate that significant rendering quality improvements of up to 1.9 dB can be achieved with the proposed method.

Square-root second-order extended Kalman filter and its application in target motion analysis

In this study, a new non-linear filter based on second-order extended Kalman technology and square-root Kalman algorithm is proposed and applied to the problem of target motion analysis (TMA). By orthogonalising the state vectors with the square root of covariance matrix, the authors reduce the computational complexity in the second-order extended Kalman algorithm, and then we deduce a second-order extended Kalman algorithm based on square-root Kalman technology, which is more numerically stable and can guarantee positive and semi-definiteness of the state covariance. The authors apply the new algorithm to a TMA problem, and prove with both numerical simulation and actual experimentation that their algorithm performs well in the significant non-linear systems.

Real-time design of space/spatial-frequency optimal filter

A two-dimensional (2D) optimal filter for highly nonstationary 2D signal estimation is developed. It is based on the real-time results of space/spatial-frequency (S/SF) analysis, on the correspondence of the filter's region of support (FRS) to the signal's local frequency (LF) and on the real-time LF estimation algorithm, proposed here. The filter permits multiple FRS detection in the observed 2D signal point, enabling very efficient real-time filtering of nonstationary multicomponent FM signals, highly concentrated in the S/SF space and exposed to the high white noise.

Local map update for large scale SLAM

A technique for simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) for large scale scenarios is presented. This solution is based on the use of independent submaps of a limited size to map large areas. In addition, a global stochastic map, containing the links between adjacent submaps, is built. The information in both levels is corrected every time a loop is closed: local maps are updated with the information from overlapping maps, and the global stochastic map is optimised by means of constrained minimisation.
