A sign subband adaptive filter (SSAF) for acoustic echo cancellation is proposed, which is derived by minimising the L(1)-norm of the subband a posteriori error vector subject to a constraint on the tap-weight vector of the filter. In addition, a variable regularisation parameter (VRP) is introduced to improve the performance of the SSAF. Simulation results are presented to verify the good robustness of the proposed VRP-SSAF against double-talk.

In this reported work, novel microstrip lowpass filters featuring wide stopband and high attenuation have been developed. These filters are composed of multiple open stubs and short-end coupled lines. By properly selecting the electrical lengths of the open stubs and short-end coupled lines, transmission zeros can be generated in the vicinity of harmonics and a wide stopband can be obtained. Detailed design procedures are provided;moreover, agreement between measured and theoretically predicted results demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed filter.

A novel approach for eye detection is proposed, where an eye filter considering textural characteristics of eye regions and non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF)-based image reconstruction is utilised. The eye filter for detecting pairs of eye candidate points is utilised. To detect the exact eye position, all pairs of the eye candidates are evaluated by a cost function, which minimises the NMF-based image reconstruction error. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method achieves better performance of eye detection than existing methods under various environments such as head pose, facial expression and illumination conditions.

The digital signalprocessing (DSP) algorithms developed for digital filters and the perfectly matched layer (PML) formulations are incorporated with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to model open region double-negative (DNG) meta-material electromagnetic problems. In the proposed approach, the dielectric parameters of each FDTD unit cell are interpreted as an infinite impulse response digital filter which can be implemented efficiently using the transpose direct form II. A numerical example carried out in a two-dimensional domain is included to show the validity of the proposed formulation.

The wavefront curvature error in one stationary bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image focused via the polar format algorithm (PFA) is analysed and a space-variant filtering method for wavefront curvature correction is proposed. The nonlocal means (NLM) filter is one of the most popular denoising approaches and there have been many improvements regarding its weight function and parameter optimisation. However, those improvements have not removed artifacts such as the false texture pattern, which occurs when the smoothing parameter in the weight function is small. The smoothness in the flat region and the sharpness in the texture region without the artifacts can be ensured by accurately estimated weights, which can be calculated with sufficient similar patches. In this reported work, a NLM algorithm with weight update is used to exploit the weights from relatively similar locations as well as the weights from the centre location. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performed well.
