Connection between multichannel prediction error filter and spectral factorisation

A decorrelation technique is used to derive the matrix of causal filters which will reduce any multichannel correlated and coloured data to the underlying set of uncorrelated unit variance white innovation signals. This filter matrix has a stable causal inverse which forms one part of the spectral factorisation of the data set, as used in multichannel Wiener filtering.

Pulse compression filter generating optimal uniform range sidelobe level

A uniform sidelobe level represents an optimum performance criterion in the design of pulse compression waveforms. A new form of pulse compression filter for polyphase codes is presented which generates a flat uniform sidelobe pattern similar to those obtainable from Barker codes. The sidelobe levels are decided solely by the length of the phase codes, which can be set arbitrarily. Their use involves a small loss and degradation in range resolution, but excellent Doppler tolerance.

The authors propose a solution to the problem of demodulation of a frequency modulated speech signal using an extended Kalman filter. They discuss the justification for, and generation of, the third-order model and compare the results to those obtained through using a simple single pole message model quoted extensively in the literature.

Proposal for transparent cascading of 3:4 up and subsequent 4:3 down conversion filtering

A proposal is described which is based on a 3:4 FIR Nyquist up conversion filter and a corresponding 4:3 FIR Nyquist down conversion filter that on cascading result mathematically in the identity operator. The proposed filters are applied horizontally to critical video signals. Experimental results show that, despite the limited numerical precision of filter coefficients and filter calculations, an almost (55 dB) transparent cascade can be achieved. The small amplitude errors are in the order of +/- 1 unit and found to be invisible when the pictures are displayed on a grade 1 studio monitor of standard TV resolution. Additionally, a high subjective quality for up converted pictures is achieved and maintained over several cascades.

Digital algorithm for maximisation of symmetric ambiguity functions and application to signal time-delay estimation

Ambiguity functions are usually symmetric around their maximum. In such a case, a consistent estimator of their median value can also detect their maximum. A digital algorithm searches for the zero-crossing point of the Hilbert transform of the estimated function samples. The performance of such a method is analysed by a reduced Taylor expansion, depending on the second-order statistics of the estimated ambiguity samples. The accuracy is explicitly provided in the case of time-delay estimation between random Gaussian signals, corrupted by Gaussian noises. The optimal length of an FIR implementation of the Hilbert filter is also discussed with reference to the generalised cross-correlation method.

Radio frequency interference (RFI) suppression in SAR images often requires a great amount of computation. The authors describe how significant computational savings can be achieved by integrating the RFI suppression stage, implemented with a least-mean-squared (LMS) adaptive filter, with the range compression stage of the range/Doppler SAR processing algorithm.

Efficient implementation of class of isotropic quadratic by using Walsh-Hadamard transform

A method is proposed for th efficient implementation of a class of second-order Volterra filters where their quadratic kernels are recursively constructed from a set of isotropic subkernels (ISKs). The quadratic kernel of this class of filters can be factorised into a diagonal form by a Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) and be implemented using a transform-and-multiply structure. An algorithm for determining the quadratic ISK kernel for the nonlinear prediction of speech signals is presented.

High quality digital PAL decoding for single frames

A software-based method for obtaining high quality colour single frames from a PAL signal is described. A two-dimensional finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter extracts the subcarrier from the composite source. Chrominance demodulation is by orthogonal free-running subcarriers followed by vector rotation of the U and V components by reference to the demodulated burst vector. The system is also applicable to NTSC.

The joint probabilistic data association filter is used for angle tracking of multiple moving targets. To improve the performance, in terms of data association, this filter uses power measurements, in addition to angle measurements. These measurements are provided by the MUSIC algorithm. The tracking performance of the algorithm is assessed by Monte Carlo simulations using different trajectories.
