Bipolar transversal filters with large sidelobe suppression implemented using WDM technologies

A new RF-photonic transversal filter based on wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) technologies is reported. The tap-amplitudes of the bandpass filter were designed to be antisymmetric and arbitrarily reconfigurable. For 20-tap filters centred at 4.8 GHz, a sidelobe suppression of >30 dB, passband widths <470 MHz, and a linear insertion phase are demonstrated.

Convolutive blind signal separation by estimating mixing channels in time domain

Unlike conventional blind signal separation (BSS) methods estimating unmixing channels, an improved BSS method by estimating mixing channels in time domain is presented. Compared to the unmixing channels with IIR characteristics the mixing channels can be approximated by FIR filters with fewer time delays, and the proposed method demonstrates superior performance for the same training data.

Low-bandwidth binaural beamforming

An efficient beamforming scheme for wireless binaural hearing aids is proposed that provides a trade-off between the transmission bit rate and the amount of noise reduction. It is proposed to transmit only the low-frequency part of the signal from one hearing aid to the other, which is used in a binaural beamformer to generate the low-frequency part of the output. The high-frequency part is generated by a monaural beamformer using only the locally available microphone signals. The trade-off can be attained by adjusting the cutoff frequency of the lowpass filter. For speech sources with a 8 kHz bandwidth in the presence of an interfering source, it is shown that good performance can be achieved with a cutoff frequency of 4 kHz.

Complexity analysis of morphological area openings and closings with set union

Area openings and closings are basic connected morphological operators that remove connected components which fail an area criterion. They are widely used in image filtering ( e. g. for noise reduction) and segmentation and can be implemented efficiently using union-find-based algorithms. The authors show that the computational complexity of morphological area openings/closings based on disjoint set union is of order O(N) when N/lambda, where lambda is an area threshold and N the image size, is sufficiently large, as in most practical applications.

Low complexity dynamically regularised RLS algorithm

Proposed is a low complexity dynamically regularised recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filtering algorithm based on dichotomous co- ordinate descent iterations. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced to O(N-2), N being the filter length, compared to O(N-3) for a directly regularised RLS algorithm. Field programmable gate array implementation shows that the proposed algorithm is hardware efficient.

Improved particle filter for nonlinear system state

A particle filter based on the similarity of the observation path is presented. When the likelihood has a bimodal nature, the particle filter leads to more accurate state estimates than SIR, APF, RPF and GPF.

Compact ultra-wideband antenna with dual bandstop characteristic

A simple and compact ultra-wideband microstrip-fed planar antenna with dual bandstop characteristic is presented. By using a U-slot defected ground structure ( DGS) in the feedline, a stopband of 600 MHz ( from 5.45 to 6.05 GHz) for band rejection of WLAN is achieved. To obtain another stopband, an arched slot is etched on the radiating patch. Experimental results show that the designed antenna, with a compact size of 30 x 24.5 mm, has an impedance bandwidth of 2.8 - 11 GHz for voltage standing wave ratio ( VSWR) less than 2, except two frequency stop-bands of 3.5-4.25 GHz and 5.45-6.05 GHz. Moreover, the antenna has good omnidirectional radiation patterns in the H-plane.

Dual microphone-based speech enhancement by spectral classification and Wiener filtering

An efficient speech enhancement algorithm based on spectral classification and Wiener filtering is proposed. Under the assumption that the location of the target source is known, the spectral classification in the frequency domain is performed by the time delay and the magnitude ratio between dual microphone inputs. Then, the Wiener filter is applied to enhance noisy speech. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the speech quality and the recognition accuracy significantly.

Distributed impairment compensation for dispersion and nonlinear effects using backward propagation in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) environment is demonstrated. Dispersion compensation is achieved using complex infinite-impulse-response filtering, which significantly reduces the computational load compared to using finite-impulse-response filtering.
