Efficient non-intrusive divergence detection techniques in an in-service non-intrusive measurement device

Efficient non-intrusive techniques that minimise divergence and enable optimal echo path modelling of noise-impaired speech telephony circuits are proposed. Original simulation results show a modelling misadjustment improvement of 28dB at an echo-to-noise ratio of 0dB over Is adaptation using conventional realtime least-mean-square digital adaptive filter systems.

Fullband-subband automatic switching scheme for stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation

A new combination of fullband and subband algorithms, with a particular automatic switching scheme, is proposed to obtain convergence rate improvement and complexity reduction for teleconferencing systems. The switching criterion of the proposed algorithm, based upon the autocorrelation function of the error signal, is introduced to avoid dependency upon signal-to-noise ratio. Simulation examples suggest that enhanced performance can be achieved at low computational cost.

Hybrid LMS-LMF algorithm for adaptive echo cancellation

The coefficients of an echo canceller with a near-end section and a far-end section are usually updated with the same updating scheme, such as the LMS algorithm. A novel scheme is proposed for echo cancellation that is based on the minimisation of two different cost functions, i.e. one for the near-end section and a different one for the far-end section. The approach considered leads to a substantial improvement in performance over the LMS algorithm when it is applied to both sections of the echo canceller. The convergence properties of the algorithm are derived. The proposed scheme is also shown to be robust to noise variations. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of the new algorithm.

Combining linear filtering and radial basis function networks for accurate profile recovery

The efficient method presented for the accurate approximation of signal profiles corrupted by noise is based on a principled combination of linear and nonlinear processing. The nonlinear processing is realised using a radial basis network which is designed, trained and validated within the strict time constraints set by instrumentation requirements, The quality of profile approximation and the decision to use either linear or nonlinear processing are set by confidence limits which, in turn, are set by the best estimate of current system noise. The approach is described in terms of a novel capillary electrophoresis instrument with all processing implemented on a dedicated DSP subsystem.

Algorithmically engineered fast multichannel adaptive filter based on QR-RLS

A fast version of the multichannel QR algorithm for RLS adaptive filtering, with channel filters of unequal length, is derived. This is achieved by applying the techniques of algorithmic engineering to a signal flow graph representation of the basic QR RLS algorithm. By virtue of this graphical approach, the derivation is relatively straightforward and circumvents the complex and notationally verbose matrix algebra usually involved in the derivation of fast RLS algorithms in general and the previously published, unequal-length, multichannel RLS lattice algorithm in particular.

Cumulant-based LP method for two-dimensional spectral estimation

A cumulant-based linear prediction (CBLP) method for two-dimensional (2-D) spectral estimation is presented. The main idea of the method is to compute the coefficients of two different single-quadrant prediction filters by applying the LP theory to a selected 2-D fourth-order mixed cumulant slice of the noisy signal. These coefficients are employed in formulating two different autoregressive spectral models. Both spectral models are combined to obtain the desired spectral estimate. The effectiveness of the proposed CBLP method is demonstrated through computer simulation.

Algorithm for detection of manoeuvring targets in bearings-only passive target tracking

The feasibility of modified gain extended Kalman filter using bearings-only measurements is explored for underwater applications. A much simpler version of the modified function is considered for the development of this algorithm. This algorithm estimates target motion parameters and detects target manoeuvre, using zero mean chi-square distributed random sequence residuals, in a sliding window format. The detection of target manoeuvre, in particular in highly nonlinear (high bearing-rate) scenarios, is explored. The performance of this algorithm is evaluated in Monte Carlo simulations, and results are shown for various typical geometries.
