A nonlinear interference canceller structure, which combines a nonlinear adaptive filter with a memoryless nonlinear limiter, is investigated. A more realistic narrowband interference model is used in which the interference is considered as a digitally modulated signal. Simulation results indicate that the nonlinear interference canceller offers significant advantages over conventional nonlinear filters.

An adaptive filtering algorithm for artefact removal in block coded images is presented. Based on an analysis of block artefacts in the frequency domain, the edge image is notch filtered and then used for a neighbourhood analysis. A space-variant filter is applied to the coded image adaptively, dependent on a frequency analysis.

The authors describe an extension to the interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm using a fuzzy logic framework. Each Kalman filter is considered to be locally valid, applicable over a region of the target acceleration space defined by the filter conditioning value. The validity of each Kalman filter is determined using fuzzy sets and an estimate of the target acceleration. With suitable choice of the fuzzy set overlap, only a subset of models close to the acceleration estimate need be evaluated. Simulation results are included for a typical manoeuvring target scenario which illustrate the effect of different forms of fuzzy sets. These confirm that the approach compares favourably with IMM in terms of both estimation accuracy and computational load.

A numerically simple filter fcr reducing ringing noise in transform coded images is proposed. The filter adapts to the local image characteristics and has been specifically designed to amend the current deblocking filter in H.263. It is shown that by adding the proposed filter both subjective and objective image quality improve.

A novel post-processing technique is presented which reduces DCT noise patterns in block coded images. The proposed technique first estimates the DCT noise patterns across the image, then reduces this particular distortion by appropriate filtering. The simulation results show that the proposed technique provides good subjective qualities.
