This article provides a novel control strategy for a single-phase multilevel hybrid active power filter (HAPF) with LCL-filter coupling applied for reactive power compensation and harmonics mitigation with finite control set mode predictive control (FCS-MPC). The proposed strategy was designed aiming to reduce the control complexity and computational burden, which is important when considering the application of FCS-MPC to multilevel converters. The proposed method avoids the application of cascaded controllers in the current control loop, considering only the system model for the calculation of the references. Tests performed in a 7.5 kVA laboratory prototype demonstrate the technique capability to maintain unity power factor at the source, keep the source current within THD standards and reduce the computational time in almost 30% when compared to the application of cascaded controllers in the current reference calculation.

This paper applies finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for dynamic reactive power compensation using a hybrid active power filter (HAPF). The FCS-MPC uses a model based on LCL-filter equations to predict the system behavior and optimize the control action. In fact, the application of FCS-MPC in grid-connected converters with LCL-Filter is quite recent. This algorithm is a very promising control technique for power electronics converters and its use for reactive power control of hybrid filter has not been reported in the literature yet. This paper uses the FCS-MPC in a multivariable structure along with an adaptive notch filter to damp resonance. The main purpose is to improve the dynamic response of the HAPF. Simulation as well as practical results prove the feasibility of FCS-MPC application in HAPF reactive power control. The dynamic response of the equipment was significantly improved and represents the main contribution of this paper. As a result, the FCS-MPC allows tracking fluctuations and abrupt changes in load reactive power.

A typical battery energy storage system consists of a combination of battery packs and a grid-tied power conversion system. The control algorithm of the power conversion system plays an important role when interfacing the DC energy stored in battery packs with the conventional AC grid to generate an obedient bidirectional power flow. finite control set model predictive control is believed to be one of the most effective choices for controlling power conversion systems. However, the performance of such a control strategy heavily depends on the accuracy of the predictive model. Parameter mismatch in the model leads to prediction error, which deteriorates the overall power quality performance of the power conversion system. Therefore, this paper studies a robust finite control set model predictive control method based on a discrete disturbance observer to eliminate the negative effects caused by model inaccuracy and uncertainty. The stability issue of the additional observer is discussed from the perspective of closed-loop poles. Parameter scan is performed to provide assistance in designing the feedback matrix. Finally, simulations and experimental results obtained from a downscaled prototype rated at 4.2 kVA are conducted as a validation of the presented control algorithm.

In this paper, a new method to reduce the steady state torque tracking error of finite control set model predictive torque control for switched reluctance motor drives is proposed. The steady state tracking error is considered as one of the main shortcomings of the conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC). This can happen due to parameter uncertainties or when the multiple objectives are achieved by a single function with weighting factors. In the conventional model predictive torque control for SRM, the control action is obtained by a multi-objective cost function designed to track a reference torque while minimizing the phase currents over the prediction horizon. The optimal switching state which minimizes the cost function is selected and applied at each switching instant, which results in the steady state torque tracking error. In this paper, a compensation term is added to the reference torque at each sample instant to minimize the torque tracking error. The compensation term is calculated based on the estimated average torque tracking error in the previous sample times. Simulations on a three phase, 12/8, 2.3 kW SRM show promising results with the proposed method as compared to the conventional FCS-MPC.

Combining the model predictive control method with the mathematical model of grid connected inverter, a finite control set model predictive control method of grid-tied inverter is proposed. This control method abandons a large number of nonlinear control links and PWM modulation links in the traditional control method, establishes the discrete mathematical model of the inverter, and evaluates the output current of the inverter online. The grid-tied inverter model is built on MATLAB / Simulink simulation platform, and the control algorithm is verified. The results show that the finite set model predictive control achieves the expected effect, and has good steady-state and dynamic characteristics and robustness, and the control method is simple and easy to realize digitization.

Recently, the control of multiphase electric drives has been a hot research topic due to the advantages of multiphase machines, namely the reduced phase ratings, improved fault tolerance and lesser torque harmonics. finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is one of the most promising high performance control strategies due to its good dynamic behaviour and flexibility in the definition of control objectives. Although several FCS-MPC strategies have already been proposed for multiphase drives, a comparative study that assembles all these strategies in a single reference is still missing. Hence, this paper aims to provide an overview and a critical comparison of all available FCS-MPC techniques for electric drives based on six-phase machines, focusing mainly on predictive current control (PCC) and predictive torque control (PTC) strategies. The performance of an asymmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine is compared side-by-side for a total of thirteen PCC and five PTC strategies, with the aid of simulation and experimental results. Finally, in order to determine the best and the worst performing control strategies, each strategy is evaluated according to distinct features, such as ease of implementation, minimization of current harmonics, tuning requirements, computational burden, among others.

Multiphase brushless direct current (BLDC) motors can meet the increasing demand for higher reliability in motor drives applicable in electric vehicles by integrating fault diagnosis to a fault-tolerant (FT) control method. To achieve this goal, a modified FT finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is proposed in this paper. The dead beat control is used to predict the reference voltage applied by the inverter. A sensitivity analysis is done to show the effect of model uncertainty on the controller performance. In addition, a simple, fast and general open switch and short circuit fault detection (FD) method in voltage source inverter (VSI) is presented. The FD method is capable of detecting open switch, open phase, and short circuit faults without any auxiliary variable. Moreover, it is robust to both speed and load transients in a motor drive. To validate the presented theory, experimental results are conducted on a five-phase BLDC motor drive with outer rotor in wheel structure. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a constant switching frequency finite control set model predictive control applied to the boost converter of a photovoltaic system. The controller consists of two control loops: the outer voltage control loop employs the voltage reference generated by the MPPT and the system model to calculate the inductor predicted current reference for the converter, in order to minimize the error in the voltage at the terminals of the panel. The inner current control loop minimizes the current error to obtain a cost function calculated from the current variation rates in the inductor for the two possible states of the switch. The resulting equation gives the converter's duty cycle, thus ensuring constant switching frequency. The obtained results are compared with a two-pole two-zero controller using an experimental setup presenting a reduction in the settling time, steady-state error and overshoot, attesting the controller performance.

Online multi-parameter estimation of interior permanent magnet motor drives with finite control set model predictive control

This study presents an online multiparameter estimation scheme for interior permanent magnet motor drives that exploits the switching ripple of finite control set (FCS) model predictive control (MPC). The combinations consist of two, three, and four parameters are analysed for observability at different operating states. Most of the combinations are rank deficient without persistent excitation (PE) of the system, e.g. by signal injection. This study shows that high frequency current ripples by MPC with FCS are sufficient to create PE in the system. This study also analyses parameter coupling in estimation that results in wrong convergence and propose a decoupling technique. The observability conditions for all the combinations are experimentally validated. Finally, a full parameter estimation along with the decoupling technique is tested at different operating conditions.

A Modified finite control set model predictive control for 3L-NPC Grid-Connected Inverters Using Virtual Voltage Vectors

In order to improve the performance of a 3-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) grid-connected inverter with finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC), this paper proposes a modified FCS-MPC algorithm based on the rearranged control set (MFCS-MPC). By adding synthetic virtual voltage vectors to rearrange the finite control set (FCS) of the 3L-NPC inverter, the frequency spectrum of output leg voltage becomes concentrated, which is benefited for decreasing total harmonic distortion (THD) of grid currents and makes it easier to design output filters for the grid-connected inverter. Moreover, based on switching state sequences of virtual voltage vectors, the modified predictive model of the proposed method is established considering capacitor voltage difference. Besides, according to the location of the reference output voltage vector, a preselection step is incorporated into MFCS-MPC to narrow the control set for predictions, which avoids evaluating all candidate voltage vectors in the control set, and hence, the online computational burden is significantly reduced. A prototype of 3L-NPC grid-connected inverter is established to validate the proposed MFCS-MPC method and the experimental results show that this method has excellent static and dynamic performance, with a low THD for a wide range of modulation indexes.
