A review of finite control set model predictive control for linear machines

Linear machines (LMs) have become excellent candidates for linear motion applications due to their abilities of generating thrust without any transmissions, and have been widely adopted in transportation, industries etc. Among the numerous control methods of LM drive systems, finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) method has been given special attention due to its clear concept, fast response performance, and ability to handle constrained multivariate non-linear control problems. It is widely used to improve the performance and efficiency of overall LM drive systems. Firstly, based on the three elements of FCS-MPC, the advantages and shortcomings of the FCS-MPC method in applications are fully investigated. The research status in FCS-MPC has been summarised, such as multistep MPC, parameters robustness improvement, fast optimisation, and multi-vector MPC. Then, the key issues in FCS-MPC such as delay compensation, parameters design, and stability analysis are discussed, and their typical research methods and current research status are explained. Finally, the future development trends of FCS-MPC in LM drive systems are discussed.

In this paper, the reference tracking and switching loss minimization problem of grid-tied inverters has been formulated as an integer least square (ILS) problem. It is considered an NP-hard and combinatorial problem due to the binary nature of switching status. A novel modification to the traditional non-recursive sphere decoding algorithm is being proposed in this research to address the implementation of long-horizon control with reduced computational burden. The proposed algorithm demonstrates a significant reduction in computation cost for long horizons resulting in energy minimization. The proposed method exploits the state-space model of the system to predict the sector in the space vector two-dimensional plane in which reference voltage could exist, thereby reducing the search space and time to search for the optimal solution. The proposed algorithm optimizes the utilization of controller resources compared to the conventional approach. The algorithm's performance has been validated through simulations and Hardware in loop verification, for the performance optimization of a three-phase grid-tied inverter coupled using RL filter.

Investigation of Variable Switching Frequency in finite control set model predictive control on Grid-Connected Inverters

finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been widely studied and applied to the power converters and motor drives. It provides the power electronics system with fast dynamic response, nonlinear system formulation, and flexible objectives and constraints integration. However, its variable switching frequency feature also induces severe concerns on the power loss, the thermal profile, and the filter design. Stemming from these concerns, this article investigates the variable switching frequency characteristics of FCS-MPC on the grid-connected inverters. An intuitive relationship between the switching frequency and the magnitude of the converter output voltage is proposed through the geometry analysis, where the switching frequency is maximized when the converter output voltage is around one-third of the DC bus voltage and decreasing when the output voltage moves away from this value. The impacts of this variable switching frequency property on the power loss and current harmonics are also analyzed. Simulation and experimental results both verify the proposed property. With this intrinsic property, FCS-MPC can autonomously achieve a less-varying temperature profile of power modules and an improved reliability compared with the conventional control strategy.

In this article, novel approach in implementing finite control set predictive control is introduced. Algorithm is implemented using general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit. Predictions are computed using parallel threads on the GPU. Optimal switching state is then selected in dependence on the cost function given by angular speed error and constraints on the current. The algorithm is tested in the PIL simulation using Simulink and Jetson Nano. The ability of the algorithm to ensure the reference tracking and keeping the current within its limits are discussed.

Conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) for multilevel converters can realize multi objective control and contain the nonlinear characteristics. However, conventional FCS-MPC may lead to high computational complexity and unwanted switching transition, which is not easy to implement. To solve the issues of computational burden and unwanted switching transition, this paper proposes the fast FCS-MPC for three-phase five-level nested neutral point piloted (NNPP) converter. According to the switching principle, the finite control subset of the effective candidates is obtained from all of the switching combinations, which significantly reduces the necessary iterations and computational complexity. The proposed fast FCS-MPC also avoids output level jump and unwanted switching transition. Moreover, the neutral-point voltage balance and reducing switching frequency are also taken into account in the cost function. Finally, the five-level NNPP converter simulation model is built. The simulation results verify the correctness of the proposed fast FCS-MPC.

Modern, advanced digital control approaches for (multi-level) Voltage Source Converters (VSC) such as the model predictive control (MPC) have been strongly investigated in the recent years. In this paper, we analyse a finite control set MPC approach, which has been implemented with an exhaustive search algorithm. Regarding the prediction model, a hybrid modelling approach is investigated, i. e. the complete plant model combines both, the discrete switching characteristics of the VSC as well as the DC-link, output filter and grid dynamics. To account for measurement and computational delays, a predictive compensation strategy is proposed. The overall control is implemented on an FPGA, taking advantage of its parallel processing capability. The major design philosophy of the VHDL implementation to face the high computational burden of the algorithm is discussed. Simulations and experimental studies have been carried out to benchmark various design parameters and validate the simulation.

Grid-connected inverter, as one of the core components of power system, plays an important role in renewable energy generation. Many control methods for inverters are widely studied. Among them, finite control set model predictive control (FCS MPC) has many advantages, such as fast transient response, simple implementation and convenience to consider nonlinear and constraints. However, FCS MPC also has some shortcomings, one of which is that the performance of predictive algorithm is easily affected by the system model. The performance of the traditional FCS MPC algorithm is susceptible to model errors and parameter variations. To solve this problem, an adaptive FCS MPC algorithm is designed in this paper. The single-phase inverter with LCL filter is selected as the control plant. Since the use of sensors will increase the cost of system, how to reduce the number of sensors is also researched. The traditional FCS MPC and proposed adaptive FCS MPC algorithm with fewer sensors are simulated respectively. The effectiveness of proposed method is confirmed by the results.

In this paper, a virtual-flux finite control set model predictive control (MPC) strategy for dual three-phase interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (DTP-IPMSM) is proposed. The technique is based on the conventional predictive current control, but it maps the measured variables into a virtualflux domain, thus simplifying the prediction stage. The technique uses a flux-based cost function to track the estimated reference flux. The flux tracking cancels out to guarantee an improved current tracking, and thus, a better torque ripple. The proposed technique is validated through simulation of a 100 kW DTP-IPMSM in Matlab/Simulink. Results evidenced a reduced current control error, thus improving the torque tracking up to 38.9 % when compared to the conventional inductance based model predictive control.
