Facilitated model predictive power control of DFIG driven by NNPC inverter for wind energy system

This study introduces a novel model predictive control approach designed for a four-level Nested Neutral Point Clamped inverter interfaced with a doubly fed induction generator. A simplified model utilizing stator voltage orientation is employed to accurately track the active and reactive power references of the generator, maintain the voltage equilibrium of the flying capacitors and reduce the frequency of the commutation. A comprehensive comparative analysis is performed in Matlab/Simulink to evaluate the conventional and previous methods against the suggested approach, thereby validating the viability of the advanced strategy. Simulation outcomes show that the offered approach offers superior dynamic and static control performance, especially regarding transient response time, total harmonic distortion of the stator current, root mean square error of power ripple, and fluctuations in flying capacitor voltages. The application of the C2000 microcontroller TMS320F28379D within a hardware-in-the-loop framework confirms the practical applicability of the suggested control strategy.

This study proposes a finite-state model predictive controller to regulate the load current and balance the DC-link capacitor voltages of a four-leg neutral-point-clamped converter. The discrete-time model of the converter, DC-link, inductive filter, and load is used to predict the future behavior of the load currents and the DC-link capacitor voltages for all possible switching states. The switching state that minimizes the cost function is selected and directly applied to the converter. The cost function is defined to minimize the error between the predicted load currents and their references, as well as to balance the DC-link capacitor voltages. Moreover, the current regulation performance is improved by using a two-step prediction horizon. The feasibility of the proposed predictive control scheme for different references and loads is verified through real-time implementation on the basis of dSPACEDS1103.

In this paper, a modification is proposed in the conventional finite control set model predictive controller (FCS-MPC) applied in the three-phase voltage source inverter's (VSI's) output current control with resistive-inductive (RL) load. It comprises the introduction of the novel type of hysteresis-based comparator in the cost function evaluation implemented with a single-step prediction horizon, which represents an improvement when compared to existing solutions. In this way, effective reduction of the VSI output voltage high switching frequency is achieved, by implementing a simplified predictive current control algorithm. Also, an effective disturbance estimator algorithm is proposed, which enables the operation of a hysteresis FCS-MPC with RL load and with unmeasurable external disturbances. Simulation and experimental tests are used in the paper to prove the effectiveness of the proposed solution, showing the extent of the impact that the chosen cost evaluation comparator hysteresis value has on the resulting average power converter switching frequency, for the model predictive control current controller operating with the zero steady-state error.

Adaptive active damping method of grid-connected inverter based on model predictive control in weak grid

The LCL-type grid-connected inverter based on finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is suitable for weak grids because of its good robustness and fast dynamic response. However, in an FCS-MPC-based system, the variable switching frequency causes the spread of the inverter-side current harmonic spectrum. Thus, the grid-side current may be distorted because the harmonics are amplified to the grid side due to the resonance peak of the LCL filter. To solve the above problem, this paper proposes an adaptive active damping (AD) method to eliminate the resonant effects. First, the system based on an MPC controller is regarded as a closed-loop system of the grid-side current, and the resonance peak is suppressed effectively by an AD, which consists of a virtual resistor and a virtual capacitor. Second, to balance the resonance suppression and dynamic performance of the system under weak grid conditions, the grid impedance is measured and the optimal AD values for different grid impedance are calculated online. Compared with the fixed-value AD, the proposed method has better resonance suppression and higher bandwidth. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control strategy are verified by simulations and experiments.

Six-phase drive-based integrated onboard battery charger for electric vehicles considering zero-sequence circulating current elimination

The concept of the integrated onboard battery charger (IOBC) provides electric vehicles (EVs) with access to the integration of the drivetrain and the charger. In this paper, an IOBC based on a six-phase drive is studied. In the charging mode, the IOBC is equivalent to a paralleled three-phase voltage source rectifier (PTP-VSR) with common ac and dc sides. Such operation leads to a zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC), which causes current waveform distortion and the resultant power loss. This paper proposes a novel ZSCC elimination strategy, which is in principle tied to finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC). By modifying the control set (CS), the ZSCC can be naturally circumvented without increasing the complexity of the control system. Furthermore, an enhanced phase-locked loop (EPLL) based on the second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) is proposed, by which, only sampling a line voltage is required. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy and EPLL are experimentally validated.

The grid-connected inverter is a key device in the renewable energy power generation system and large-scale energy storage system, which the operational stability and reliability are the basis for the efficient and safe application of electrical energy. A real-time fault diagnosis method of a three-phase for grid-connected application combining a mixed logic dynamic (MLD) model and finitecontrol set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is proposed. This paper not only realizes the open circuit fault diagnosis and location of the switching devices in the main power circuit, but also discusses the threshold issues and post-fault operations. The advantage of the proposed method is that it directly uses the control data and measurement signals of the controller without extra sensors and calculation, which will shorter the fault diagnosis time and occupy less calculation resource of the main processor. Simulation results illustrate the quickness of the fault identification and accurate position with robustness to the interference of the diagnosis method. Finally, the effectiveness of the diagnosis method was verified by a 1500 W experimental prototype in a laboratory.

This paper proposed an efficient model predictive control strategy for a three-level T-type inverter connected to a doubly fed induction generator. A dynamic model is utilized to track the power reference, preserve the DC-link voltage balancing and reduce the inverter switching frequency and common-mode voltage. Unlike the traditional finite control set model predictive control, the stability of the closed-loop system and computational burden reduction are concurrently accomplished as the main contribution to the proposed strategy. At each sampling period, the proposed algorithm only considers the candidate control inputs which satisfy the stability condition taken from a suitable control Lyapunov function for evaluating the optimization problem. Due to model uncertainties and discrete set control input voltages, an attractivity set is employed to determine the stability and converge of the system. Therefore, the lower computation time of the optimization problem is the potential benefit compared with the conventional method. Simulation investigation with different operating conditions of a 2 MW wind turbine is carried out by MATLAB/Simulink. The achieved results confirm the stability guarantees while reducing the computational burden and obtaining the same control performances in comparison with the conventional method.

finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has the ability to achieve multi-objective optimization, but there are still many challenges. The key to realizing multi-objective optimization in FCS-MPC lies in the design of the cost function. However, the different dimensions of penalty terms in the cost function often lead to difficulties in designing weighting coefficients. Incorrect weighting coefficients may result in truncation errors in calculations of DSPs and FPGAs, thereby affecting the algorithm's control performance. Therefore, this article focuses on a system driving an induction motor with a three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter, and selects stator current and switching frequency as penalty terms in the cost function. An improved method is proposed to unify the dimensions of both penalty terms in the cost function. By unifying the dimensions of the penalty terms, a simple design of weighting coefficients can be achieved. Subsequently, to balance the inverter's switching frequency and the dynamic response performance of the motor, a composite cost function is further proposed. Finally, the rationality of the proposed method is validated through simulation and experimental platforms.

The classic model predictive control leads to a variable switching frequency which could produce resonances in the input filter of the matrix converter, affecting the performance of the system. This paper proposes two methods to mitigate the resonance of the input filter to solve this issue. The first method consists in a hybrid combination of model predictive current control with instantaneous reactive power minimization and an active damping method which consists in emulating a virtual resistor in parallel to the input filter's capacitor. The second method imposes a sinusoidal source current instance to minimize the instantaneous reactive power at the input side. Both methods can be further enhanced with fixed switching frequency operations. Simulated results confirm the feasibility of the proposal demonstrating that the performance of the system is improved with source and load currents showing a significant reduction in the harmonic distortion produced by the filter resonance.

MPC-based microgrid control with supplementary fault current limitation and smooth transition mechanisms

This study presents a control strategy for a microgrid that consists of multiple distributed generators (DGs), for both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation, where every DG is interfaced to the main grid via a voltage sourced inverter (VSI). finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is used as the primary controller to regulate the output power of each DG (in the grid-connected mode) or the voltage of the point of DG coupling (in the islanded mode of operation). In the grid-connected mode, direct power model predictive control (DPMPC) is implemented to manage the power flow between each DG and the main grid. In the islanded mode, voltage model predictive control (VMPC), as the primary control, and droop control, as the secondary control, are employed to control the output voltage of each DG and system frequency. The controller is equipped with a supplementary current limiting technique to limit the output current of each DG in case of overcurrent scenarios. The control approach also enables a smooth transition between the two modes. The performance of the control strategy is investigated and verified using PSCAD/EMTDC software platform.
