Computationally efficient model predictive control for quasi-Z source inverter based on Lyapunov function

This paper proposes a computationally efficient model predictive control strategy for quasi-Z source inverter. Unlike the classical finite control set model predictive control method, besides the ability of computational cost reduction, the proposed method considers the stability of the closed-loop system in the control design. At each sampling period, only feasible switch control inputs that satisfy the stability condition derived from a control Lyapunov function are taken into account in the minimisation of the cost function. Therefore, the computation time of the optimisation problem is decreased compared with the conventional algorithm. A comparison of the classical model predictive control method is investigated by Matlab software in various operating conditions of the system. The achieved results verify the benefit of the proposed approach for dealing with the stability and computational burden over the conventional method while maintaining high control performance.

This paper investigates a finite-control set model-predictive control (FCS-MPC) algorithm to enhance the performance of a synchronous reluctance machine drive. Particular emphasis is placed on the definition of the cost function enabling a computationally light implementation while targeting good transient and steady-state performance. In particular, this work proposes the inclusion of an integral term into the cost function to ensure zero steady-state errors thus compensating for any model inaccuracies. A control effort term is also considered in the formulation of the cost function to achieve a high ratio between the sampling frequency and the average switching frequency. After a comprehensive simulation study showing the advantages of the proposed approach over the conventional FCS-MPC for a wide range of operating conditions, several experimental test results are reported. The effectiveness of the proposed control approach, including a detailed analysis of the effect of the load and speed variations, is thus fully verified providing useful guidelines for the design of a direct model predictive controller of synchronous reluctance motor drives.

In this paper a predictive control technique for an indirect matrix converter is proposed. The control strategy allows the output current control and the instantaneous reactive input power minimization of the converter without any weighting factor in the controller and, at the same time, the operation at fixed switching frequency. Simulation results validate the proposal under both steady and transient states.

This paper presents a five-level bi-directional flying capacitor DC-DC converter topology for energy management application in a DC microgrid. Unlike traditional two-level DC-DC converter, the presence of multiple flying capacitors in this topology brings the possibility of having a higher voltage-gain conversion ratio at enhanced efficiency. The existence of five voltage levels give the converter an advantage of having reduced voltage stress on its power switches and a low-sized inductor filter at its input. Additionally, the capability of having bi-directional power flow enables the converter to integrate energy storage devices such as the battery to a high voltage DC microgrid effectively. A finite control set - model predictive control (FCS-MPC) algorithm is formulated using the developed mathematical model in order to yield the multi-objective of bi-directional power flow and three flying capacitor voltage balancing. Furthermore, a DC microgrid comprising photo-voltaic (PV) system, load, and battery are considered to assess the effectiveness of the designed FCS-MPC algorithm under varying load and PV power injections.

Interleaved DC-DC converters are a popular choice due to their benefits of low current ripple, high efficiency, and flexibility. However, in applications such as electric vehicles where the load comprises a motor drive system consisting of another converter, using separate controllers for the converters can result in various issues, such as delays, higher complexity, and increased costs. To overcome these problems, a paper proposes a finite control set model predictive control method that can simultaneously control a 3-phase interleaved boost converter and a permanent magnet synchronous motor drive inverter. The paper suggests writing the governing equations of converters to find the relationship between them and create an integrated control system. The proposed control method's effectiveness is verified through simulation and compared against separate controllers. The results indicate that the proposed approach can achieve superior dynamic and steady-state responses, as well as greater efficiency and reliability.

The aim of this manuscript is twofold. Firstly, it presents an analytical approach to study a synchronous reluctance motor drive configured in open-end winding. The intention is to identify the potential benefits of the floating capacitor configuration over the classical single inverter supply in terms of enlargement of the constant power speed range. A deep investigation was carried out on how varying the floating capacitor voltage level allows to modify the torque-versus-speed characteristics, enabling the drive to work at favorable operating points with high power factor. Secondly, the potential of the predictive control is exploited for such multi-variable system avoiding the non-trivial tuning difficulties necessary when standard controllers are considered, and allowing two converters to be controlled with a single cost function. Simulation results prove the desired operations with high power factor and extended constant torque region while keeping good dynamic performance.

A predictive control algorithm specially developed for shunt active power filters aimed to compensate reactive power and current harmonics components is presented and analyzed. The proposed predictive control algorithm is implemented in a three-phase four-leg voltage-source inverter (4L-VSI). The use of a 4L-VSI allows the compensation of current harmonics, reactive power and neutral current harmonics generated by single-phase non-linear loads. A detailed mathematical model of the filter, including the effect of the power system equivalent impedance is derived and used to design the proposed predictive control algorithm. The proposed active power filter and associated control scheme performance and compensation effectiveness are demonstrated by simulation and with experimental results.

This paper proposes a predictive control technique for an indirect matrix converter. The proposed control strategy gives sinusoidal waveforms at both the input and output of the converter without any weighting factor in the cost function and, at the same time, giving operation at a fixed switching frequency. Simulation results with an unbalanced ac-supply validate the proposed method under both steady state and transient conditions.
