This study addresses the critical need to evaluate carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP)'s performance in pre-notched concrete beams under cyclic loading-a scenario common in aging infrastructure subjected to dynamic loads. While prior work focused on monotonic loading, this research bridges the gap by analyzing the cyclic response, providing foundation for seismic retrofitting and fatigue-prone structures. The beams are enhanced with steel and CFRP in terms of bonded internal reinforcement and unbonded external post-tensioning (EPT). To this end, twenty beams were simulated using a concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model in ABAQUS to assess the flexural response of both reinforcement materials in terms of flexural capacity, damage pattern, and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD). The cross-sectional dimensions of all beams are 100 x 150 mm, with a 900 mm loaded span. A parametric analysis was conducted to monitor the impact of the reinforcement, notch-to-depth, and shear span-to-depth ratios on the flexural performance. The results reveal that CFRP can significantly enhance the flexural performance of pre-notched concrete beams, providing a flexural capacity that is 190-270% higher than that of steel bars. Furthermore, CFRP outperformed steel in controlling damage initiation and propagation, achieving a CMOD of 20% compared to steel bars. Eventually, the finite element modeling results showed good agreement with the corresponding experimental and analytical results, with discrepancies of less than 20%. The research outcomes could aid designers in making more informed decisions regarding strengthening and repairing applications in the building sector.

The current investigation focuses on developing a finite element (FE) model using ansys parametric design language (APDL) for fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete (GPC). In this study, fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag based GPC were used, and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) was considered for strengthening the T-beam. To overcome the issue of providing fiber-reinforced polymer on the soffit of existing beams, the study was done on the effect of GFRP on the flexural strength of the side-bonded flexure-deficient T-beam. GFRP was provided in three layers through the application of epoxy. All the specimens were tested under a two-point load to determine flexural strength. The FE model was validated through the experimental results we obtained in the laboratory. The validated models were used for further parametric studies of T-beams with varying compressive strength, steel reinforcement ratio, and GFRP laminate size. The findings illustrated that finite element modeling is effective in predicting the structural response of T-beams constructed with GPC, ensuring accurate results.

This paper presents a detailed finite element formulation to examine the static bending behavior of a four-layer beam construction. The two outermost layers consist of functionally graded materials (FGM), whilst the two interior levels are constructed of homogeneous materials. A sliding interaction transpires among all four layers when an external force is applied. Shear connections are included in the model to avert possible movement between these layers. The Timoshenko beam theory and two-node beam element are used to formulate mathematical and mechanical equations. The computational program is executed via MATLAB software. Then, verification instances are supplied to validate the precision of the deployed computational program. Parametric evaluation is performed to evaluate the influence of geometric and material properties on the static bending behavior of the beam. The results of the paper illustrate the attractive nature of the proposed model. Moreover, several interrelated concerns, including buckling analysis, dynamic analysis, and structural optimization, may be inferred from this paper.

The performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt mixtures can be further improved by adding a variety of fibers available. Addition of fibers provides a cost-effective solution against increasing the dosage of SBS modified asphalt mixtures. Therefore, in this research three different types of fibers-basalt fiber, polyester fiber and lignin fiber-were added to SBS-7% bitumen binder and their performance was compared with SBS-7% mixture without any fibers. The performance was compared using laboratory tests, including indirect tensile strength tests and dynamic shear rheometer. Indirect tensile strength of all the mixtures was evaluated at various loading rates from 10 MPa/s to 70 MPa/s. Furthermore, stiffness moduli of mixtures were evaluated at frequency rages of 5 Hz, 3.5 Hz, 1.9 Hz and 1.2 Hz. finite element simulations were conducted using the Burger's logit model, and microstrain analysis was performed to evaluate rutting and fatigue damage. The results show increased performance in terms of gained tensile strength and complex shear modulus for fiber-modified mixtures. Among the fiber-modified mixtures, basalt fiber outperforms other mixtures. PF and LF exhibit almost similar performances. Basalt fiber mixture outperforms the SBS-7% mixture by 25% and 28% in terms of rutting and fatigue damage, respectively.

The electrochemical performance of carbon-based supercapacitors containing ionic liquid electrolytes was investigated through calibrated impedance spectroscopy and finite element modeling (FEM). To ensure precisely calibrated complex impedance measurements over a wide frequency range the measured pouch cells were mounted in a pressure fixture with stable terminal contacts, and a two-term impedance calibration workflow was applied. For the physical interpretation of the measurement results, FEM was used. Experimental findings demonstrated a clear dependency of the capacitive behavior on the electrode material, where cells with activated carbon electrodes showed lower impedance compared to cells with graphene electrodes. For FEM, we used a volume-averaged approach to study the effect of the electrode structure on the EIS response of the cells. The simulated impedance results showed a good agreement with experimental data in the middle- to high-frequency regions, ranging from 10 Hz to 10 kHz. Deviations from the ideal Warburg impedance were observed at lower frequencies, suggesting nonlinearity effects of the porous structure on ion transport mechanisms. FEM analysis was performed for both graphene and activated carbon electrodes showing a steeper transition region for activated carbon electrodes, indicating a reduced diffusion resistance for electrolyte ions.

PurposeThis study aimed to develop a semi-automatic workflow for medical image segmentation and finite element (FE) modeling. The workflow was subsequently used to investigate the temporal evolution of the localized mechanical strain in the rat coronal suture during normal growth. MethodsThe subject-specific FE models were created based on in vivo longitudinal micro-computed tomography images acquired from n = 4 rats (AUP00003759, 11/04/2021). The FE models were created through a semi-automatic workflow that consisted of a semi-automatic segmentation of the rat cranial sutures, a simplified full skull model, and the detailed coronal suture model. Simulated intracranial pressure loading was implemented, and the localized equivalent, maximum principal, and minimum principal strains were estimated at volumes of interest (VOIs) selected along the suture-bone interface. ResultsThe semi-automatic segmentations were consistent among operators with a coefficient of variation of 1.8% and showed good agreement compared to the manual segmentation, with maximum differences of 4.1% and 2.0% in terms of suture volume and surface area, respectively. The estimated strains evolved with a trend increasing from 7 to 9 week and 9 to 11 week time intervals and decreasing from 11 to 16 week time interval for all VOIs. The results showed that strains at VOIs significantly changed (p < 0.05) over time. The concave regions of the suture experienced the highest magnitude of strains. ConclusionThe presented research has developed an appropriate semi-automatic FE workflow capable of evaluating temporal changes in mechanical strain of cranial sutures during growth, and was utilized to demonstrate transient and location-specific changes in the rat coronal suture.

Atomistic and finite element modeling of mechanical properties and energy dissipation mechanisms in 3D aerosolization-based Voronoi graphene foams

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene materials exhibit significant potential for application due to their multifunctional properties, which merge the intrinsic characteristics of 2D graphene with added porosity and unique 3D structural morphologies. In particular, 3D closed-cellular network graphene demonstrates remarkable stiffness while maintaining super-elasticity, outperforming most previously reported carbon-based foams. However, the mechanical properties and energy dissipation mechanisms of these 3D closed-cellular network structures remain poorly understood. To address this, we propose an innovative approach using computational synthesis to construct 3D Voronoi graphene models. Molecular dynamics (MD) and finite element (FE) simulations were then employed to investigate the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of these 3D Voronoi structures. The results show that the power indices for Young's modulus, tensile strength, and compressive plateau stress as functions of relative density align closely with the theoretical values for ideal closed-cell foams (1, 1, and 2), indicating that the Voronoi structure exhibits a stretching-dominated deformation behavior. Young's modulus of the experimental 3D closed-cell graphene precisely follows the fitting function of the continuum model, validating the accuracy of our 3D Voronoi structural morphologies and the significance of our simulation work. Cyclic loading simulations were also conducted to assess the energy absorption and recovery capabilities of 3D graphene. The findings suggest that lower relative densities result in reduced energy dissipation due to less damage at cell boundaries and effective stress relief through bending and folding. In contrast, higher relative densities lead to increased energy dissipation due to higher stress concentrations and associated damage. The accurate prediction and measurement of residual stress is highly important for service reliability of welded engineering components. In this study, the residual stress distribution of 316H double V-groove welded joint was simulated using finite element method (FEM) and measured by neutron diffraction technique. The measured and simulated results of residual stress after heat treatment are consistent in the overall trend. The post-weld heat treatment causes the residual stresses in different zones of the weldment to redistribute and greatly reduce overall. From the heat-affected zone to the base metal, the tensile stress along the x direction gradually decreases, the compressive stress along the y direction gradually increases, and the stress along the z direction remains very low level. The residual stresses measured by neutron diffraction technique are calculated by fitting the {311} diffraction peaks. The effect of crystal plane selection on the measured residual stress is also discussed.

3D finite element modeling of Femtosecond Laser Trabeculotomy

ObjectivesFemtosecond laser image guided high precision trabeculotomy (FLigHT) is a novel open-angle glaucoma treatment. The procedure non-invasively creates aqueous humor (AH) drainage channel from the anterior chamber (AC) to Schlemm's canal (SC) through the trabecular meshwork (TM) to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP). The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D finite element model (FEM) of the FLigHT procedure and to simulate clinical results for different drainage channel cross-sectional ***, a FEM model of the average intact glaucomatous eye was constructed. Biometric data published in the literature were used to construct the geometry of the model, including the AC, TM, SC, and collector channels (CCs). The TM and CCs were modeled as porous material, with given permeability, to approximate the outflow resistance found in these tissues in-vivo. The permeability of the TM and CCs was estimated by comparing iterative FEM simulations with published clinical FLigHT IOP data. For that, the model was modified to simulate the FLigHT treatment of glaucoma by applying a block-like channel connecting the AC to the SC. Channel size was varied from the clinically utilized size of 200 mu m x 500 mu m down to 50 mu m x 50 mu m to investigate the effects of channel size on resultant *** model revealed that the minimum achievable IOP after FLigHT is the preoperative pressure in SC. It is independent of TM permeability;rather, it depends on CC permeability, AH inflow rate, and episcleral venous pressure. In addition, simulations predicted that a channel size of 100 mu m x 100 mu m is sufficient to obtain the maximum achievable IOP reduction.
