All optical switching devices based on kerr-effect, where light switches light, are enjoying renewed interest. The dream of ultra compact devices operating at very low power and integrable on a chip is entering the realm of reality thanks to the advent of photonic crystal, enabling high Q/V ratio. We show that marrying photonic crystal and a new class of highly non linear material, Chalcogenide glasses, is a very promising way to achieve an all-optical chip. We describe the fabrication techniques we have developed for manufacturing two-dimensional Chalcogenide photonic crystal. Different types of photonic crystal resonances are investigated. Coupling technique to chalcogenide based photonic crystal waveguides and cavities via tapered nanowires is thoroughly described. We demonstrate resonant guiding in a chalcogenide glass photonic crystal membrane using a fano probe technique. We observe strong resonances in the optical transmission spectra at normal incidence, associated with Fano coupling between free space and guided modes. We obtain good agreement with modeling results based on three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations, and identify the guided modes near the centre of the first Brillouin zone responsible for the main spectral features.

We present a transfer matrix analysis of a 2-D filter to study its frequency response functions. The (M x N) array consists of N independent columns of micro-ring resonators side-coupled to two channel bus waveguides, with equal spacing between columns and each column consisting of M coupled resonators. We show that the bandgap, of the 2-D structure is a superposition of the non-overlapping bandgap of the two I-D arrays. This non-overlapping property can be used to realize the "near-ideal" filter with flat and sharp passband, negligible sidelobes in the stop bands, and linear phase response over 80% of the passband. The existence of defect mode in linear and lossless ring resonator arrays is also demonstrated. The defect can be introduced by removing one ring or by making one ring bigger or smaller. Defect states within the photonic bandgaps behave like either donor or acceptor modes similar to other photonic crystals. The results based on transfer matrix model shows reasonable agreement with finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations.

This paper presents an evaluation of the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) and of the waveguide method (WG) for the simulation of typical hyper NA imaging problems. In contrast to previous comparisons of rigorous mask modeling methods, which were restricted to the assessment of few near fields, diffraction efficiencies, or aerial images C, at fixed imaging configurations, we compare the methods in terms of CPU-time and memory requirements, their capability to predict parameter dependencies and more global lithographic process characteristics such as process windows and through-pitch behavior.

Polarization-resolved second-harmonic spectra are obtained from the resonant modes of a two-dimensional planar photonic crystal microcavity patterned in a free-standing InP slab. The photonic crystal microcavity is comprised of a single missing-hole defect in a hexagonal photonic crystal host formed with elliptically-shaped holes. The cavity supports two orthogonally-polarized resonant modes split by 60 cm(-1). Sum-frequency data are reported from the nonlinear interaction of the two coherently excited modes, and the polarization dependence is explained in terms of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of the host InP.

We report a new computational method based on the recursive Green's function technique for a calculation of light propagation in photonic crystal (PC) structures. The method computes the Green's function of the photonic structure recursively by adding slice by slice on the basis of the Dyson's equation, that relaxes memory requirements and accelerates the computational process. The method can easily account for the infinite extension of the structure both into the air and into the space occupied by the photonic crystal by making use of the so-called "surface Green's functions". This eliminates the spurious solutions (often present in the conventional finite-difference time domain methods). The developed method has been applied to study surface modes in semi-infinite photonic crystals and their application in surface-state cavities and waveguides. Namely, we demonstrate that confining PC surface states may result in enhanced intensity of an electromagnetic field on the surface and very high Q factor of the surface state. This effect can be employed as an operational principle for surface-mode lasers and sensors. We also show a possibility of using surface states as a novel type of waveguides and discuss their applications as efficient light couplers and directional beamers.

Based on the matrix Padě approximation theory, the complex relative permeability tensor of magnetized dispersive media is described by a matrix function expansion with respect to jω in frequency domain. By substituting the operator of e/et into jω, the expansion is then transferred into the time-domain. In order to derive the formulation of the matrix expansion of complex relative permeability tensor in discretised time domain, a shifted operator in discretised time domain is introduced as a replacement of time differential operator e/et. Therefore the dispersion relation between B and H in discretised time domain can be obtained, which is then implemented to the gyrotropic medium, yielding the time iterative formulation for finite-difference time-domain computation. To verify the feasibility of the presented scheme, we apply the above-mentioned method to the electromagnetic scattering by a magnetized ferrite sphere. The computed result is in good agreement with the one obtained by recursive convolution technique. The analysis and example show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

In this study, we focus on near-field characteristics and surface plasmon (SP) induced by uniform- and nonuniform-size Ag nanoparticles in the mask layers of super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS). The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze scattering fields from the localized SPs of Ag nanoparticles. It has been found that the spatial extension of the evanescent field is very short along the thickness direction of the mask layers, and the three-dimensional coupling patterns of the evanescent fields from the nonuniform-size particles are the most irregular. The signal enhancement mechanism of a super-RENS disk is discussed.

A 4^th-order accurate unconditionally-stable IMS-FDTD method with low numerical dispersion

This paper presents a 4(th)-order accurate implicit multi-stage finite-difference time-domain (IMS-FDTD) method. The analysis of the stability shows that this IMS-FDTD method is unconditionally stable. In addition, its numerical-dispersion relation is derived and the analysis shows that its performance is better than those of conventional unconditionally-stable implicit FDTD methods and is even better than those of some conditionally-stable explicit FDTD methods, such as the Fang(2, 4)-FDTD method. FDTD analysis of a probe-fed dielectric resonator antenna in rectangular waveguide

Dielectric resonator antennas (DRA) are characterized for operation in a guided-wave environment with the ultimate goal of their use in modeling of waveguide-based DRA amplifier arrays for spatial power combining. Performance of a single probe-fed DRA element in rectangular waveguide is analyzed by varying design parameters of the DRA and the feeding probe to optimize the structure for the scattering characteristics (port matching and coupling). The effect of hard walls on the DRA behavior is also studied. The numerical analysis of waveguide-based DRA elements is based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and a coaxial probe is modeled by a thin wire approximation implemented in the FDTD algorithm. The numerical results are compared with those generated by using commercial software and exhibit a very good agreement.

The deformation and plasmon effects of silver natioparticles in a deformed AgOx-type super-resolution near-field structure are studied using the finite-difference time-domain method. The deformed AgOx-type super-resolution near-field structure (superRENS) provides an additional length (or path) that is longer than the length normal to the motion of the silver nanoparticles that are located at the far edge -of the bubble from the optical axis of the incident beam. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optical properties between the active layer and the incident light by varying polarization direction, wavelength, and the particle sizes of the silver nanoparticles in the near field zone.
