Usually, ID finitedifference based on the Taylor series expansion theorem is used to approximate the spatial ideal partial-differential operator (IPDO) using conventional FDTD methods. Such a treatment is simple, but its severe numerical dispersion is untenable. In this paper, a kind of 3D isotropic finitedifference (IFD) is introduced and a new FDTD method, called IFD-FDTD, is presented. A numerical-dispersion analysis shows that it is superior to Yee's conventional FDTD method. In addition, through the analysis of stability, it is found that its stability, condition is the same as that of Yee's FDTD method. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of microcavities in circular photonic crystal slabs are studied in this paper. It is shown that high quality factors can be obtained for such microcavities. For a cavity with three inner layers of air holes missing, Q factor larger than 105 can be obtained. It is also worth noting there exists resonant modes with high quality factors, even for the defect-free circular photonic crystal slab, due to gradual change of the average effective index. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to analyze band structures in two-dimensional Kerr-nonlinear photonic crystal slabs. A triangular lattice of circular air rods was considered. Results show red-shifting of the band structure due to the nonlinearity and the incident intensity. The red-shift of the band gap between the first and the second bands is maximal when the air rod radius is in the range 0.2a to 0.25a, where a is the period.

This study focuses on evanescent fields induced by silver nanoparticles in the mask layer and in the interfaces in an AgOx-type super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS). The finite-differencetime-domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze the scattering fields from the localized surface plasmons of silver nanoparticles. It has been found that the spatial extension of the evanescent field is very short along the thickness direction of the layers, and the 3-dimensional coupling patterns of the evanescent fields from the individual particles are irregular. The study also found that the intensity of the evanescent fields is dependent on the silver concentration.

Resist-surface bound air bubbles have been identified as a possible defect mechanism in immersion lithography. The general expectation is that the bubble will primarily cause local dose reductions, but no detailed simulations on this effect have been published. The work described in this paper is a first attempt to do so: we have simulated the effect of bubbles on 1:1 dense Line/Space patterning. Our results confirm that the major effect of the presence of a bubble is indeed underexposure - or in most cases even non-exposure - of the pattern in the area occupied by the bubble, but it also identifies a few more subtle characteristics of bubble-induced defects which can help identify defects observed on immersion wafers as being caused by a bubble. Apart from the simulation results, we also show a few experimentally observed immersion defects, which we believe are indeed generated by a bubble.

Photonic crystal microcavities are defined by the spatial arrangement of materials. In the analysis of their spatial temporal mode distributions finite-differencetime-domain (FDTD) methods have proved its validity. The output of the FDTD can be seen as the realizations of a multidimensional statistic variable. At the same time, fabrication tolerances induce an added and unavoidable variability in the performance of the microcavity. In this contribution we have analyzed the modes of a defective photonic crystal microcavity. The location, size, and shape of the cylinders configuring the microcavity are modelled as having a normal distribution of their parametric descriptors. A principal component analysis is applied to the output of the FDTD for a population of defective microcavities. The relative importance of the defects is evaluated, along with the changes induced in the spatial temporal distribution of electromagnetic field obtained from the calculation.

In this letter, we propose a novel optical modulator based on GaAs photonic crystals and investigate its optically properties numerically by using the finite-difference time-domain method. The position of the cutoff frequency can be varied by free carriers injection, and the band gap shift can be observed. Band gap shift is used to modulate light. Bing several micrometers length, low insertion loss, and large extinction ratios, the modulator can be used in ultra-small and ultra-dense photonic integrated circuits.

We present a new approach in the design of a photonic crystal bandpass filter by using waveguide bending. The bandpass filter was designed by introducing two bends with the modified geometry into the both ends of a photonic crystal waveguide. We show that such a filter exhibits step-like spectral profile in the range of 15001600 nm, with a maximum transmission of 100%. In contrast to the other designs proposed, the present one does not involve either insertion of small defects or control of cavity-lengths.
