In this study, a simplified cross-sectional approach based on finite-element analysis was developed to evaluate the flexural strengthening performance of fire-damaged RC beams using externally bonded steel plates and CFRP strips. The strength degradation of the simplified concrete cross section and reinforcing bars was determined based on the temperature field calculation results from FE software. The strength degradation models proposed in previous literature were adopted and applied based on the obtained temperature distribution. The finite-element model was validated with the previous experimental test to evaluate the accuracy of the model in predicting the residual flexural capacity of RC beams after fire exposure. It is shown that the finite-element model (FEM) was able to predict the flexural behavior of fire-damaged RC members reasonably well. The ISO-834 standard fire curve was applied to the reference flexure beam for 60 min, 90 min, and 120 min of heating before strengthening by employing the proposed methodology. The parametric study in this investigation includes the thickness and width of the strengthening materials for the comparison of the flexural capacity recovery of both retrofitting methods. The analysis results showed that the ultimate load and stiffness of fire-damaged beams strengthened with both materials improved significantly compared to the heated beams without strengthening. The damaged beams group retrofitted with externally bonded steel plates exhibited a greater increase in both ultimate load and stiffness compared to the damaged beams group retrofitted with externally bonded CFRP strips.

This study presents a finite-element (FE) investigation into the carrying capacities of corroded cold-formed steel (CFS) channel section columns under axial compression. A non-linear FE model is developed for these columns. The FE models are then employed to conduct a parametric study, comprising 426 FE models, to investigate the effects of different corrosion regions (flange, web, and lip corrosion), as well as the corrosion area's location and size on the carrying capacities of the columns. The parametric study results indicated that an increase in the degree of corrosion on the web leads to a transition from columns with distortional or overall buckling when uncorroded to columns exhibiting local buckling. Similarly, as the degree of corrosion on the flange and lip increases, the columns, which typically show local buckling when uncorroded, are more likely to exhibit distortional buckling. The ultimate load of columns mainly subjected to local and distortional buckling shows a consistent trend as the length of the corrosion area increase: it first decreases rapidly and then changes slightly. However, the rate of decrease varies depending on the half-wavelength. The ultimate load is influenced by the constraints at the end and the relationship between the failure location and the location of the corrosion area. Generally, the closer the corrosion area is to the end, the greater the ultimate load. In contrast, the closer the failure location is to the corrosion area, the smaller the ultimate load. Accordingly, this study proposes modified design equations that closely predict the carrying capacities of corroded CFS channel section columns under axial compression, as obtained from the FE model.

Die design and finite-element analysis for the hot forging of automotive wheel frames made of aluminium alloy

This study systematically analysed and optimised the hot-forging process of wheel rims made of aluminium 6061 alloy, with the objective being to achieve the desired rim shape, dimensions, grain refinement, and strength. First, friction coefficients were determined through the hot ring compression test, and the displacement and load variations of specimens were analysed at temperatures of 200 degrees C, 300 degrees C, and 450 degrees C to calculate plastic flow stress. The data obtained in these steps were then applied in finite-element simulations of aluminium alloy rims to predict the influence of forging load, die stress, temperature, and forming speed on formability and product quality. This study thoroughly investigated the effects of friction on rim formation under various billet aspect ratios, forging speeds, and temperatures. Die design and manufacturing were conducted using optimal forming parameters, and hot-forging experiments were performed using graphite as a lubricant to assess the effects of forming temperature and load curves on product dimensions and forging force. A comparison between experimental and simulation results indicated a high degree of accuracy in predicting product dimensions;thus, the adopted simulation method can be employed for process design and equipment selection. Finally, metallographic observations and hardness tests were conducted to analyse grain structure and hardness distribution across different regions of the fabricated rims;these steps allowed examination of the effectiveness of the obtained optimised forging parameters in enhancing formability and quality. The results of this study serve as a reference for advancing hot-forging techniques for aluminium alloy wheel rims.

Comparative study regarding the stability of a proximal ulnar stump with or without distal oblique bundle reconstruction during the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure: a finite-element analysis

Background The most common postoperative complication of the Sauv & eacute;-Kapandji (S-K) procedure is proximal ulnar stump instability. The distal oblique bundle (DOB) is a stable tissue used to stabilize the distal radioulnar joint. This study created finite-element models of the distal oblique bundle (DOB) to determine its effect on the proximal ulnar stump instability encountered during the Sauv & eacute;-Kapandji *** We hypothesized that a proximal ulnar stump with distal oblique bundle reconstruction would provide greater stability than a proximal ulnar stump without distal oblique bundle *** Detailed CT imaging data acquired from a pathological specimen of the wrist joint were imported into a finite-element analysis software package, and the regions of interest, including bone, cartilage, ligaments and tendons, were extracted to create a 3-dimensional model. The volar/dorsal and medial/lateral displacements of the proximal ulnar stump and the stress changes exhibited by the bone and distal oblique bundle tendon were measured with and without DOB reconstruction under 60 degrees pronation, neutrality, and 60 degrees *** When utilizing DOB reconstruction, the displacement of the radius relative to the proximal ulna stump was approximately 17.89 mm in the neutral position. The bone stress values corresponding to the neutral position, 60 degrees pronation and 60 degrees pronation were 1.01, 18.32 and 14.69 MPa, respectively. The stress peaks of the DOB tendon structure corresponding to the neutral position, 60 degrees pronation and 60 degrees pronation were 0.07 MPa, 2.21 and 1.55 MPa, respectively. Without DOB reconstruction, the displacement of the radius relative to the proximal ulna stump was approximately 18.05 mm in the neutral position. Under 60 degrees pronation and 60 degrees supination, the displacement values were approximately 14.62 mm and 16.89 mm, respectively. The peak bone stress values corresponding

Structural Behaviour and Strength Evaluation of a Venetian Church through finite-element analysis

The evaluation of the structural behaviour of a masonry Venetian church with a pointed barrel vault is presented in this paper through an analysis following the necessary steps of a monument study. With a detailed geometric model and material estimation, the finite-element method is used to investigate the influence of specific structural parts of the structure, like masonry buttresses and wall connections, on the structural behaviour. The operational modal analysis is used to identify the structure dynamically. The comparison of the eigenfrequencies, which are estimated by in situ measurements and finite-element modal analysis, is used to perform a model identification. The response spectrum analysis, the static analysis after the subsistence of some parts following strengthening proposals, and the transient analysis of specific seismic excitations are used for the evaluation of the structural behaviour. The purpose of the work is to highlight the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of a monumental complex structure, regardless of its scale. The coexistence of structural elements of different stiffnesses, such as vaults, elongated walls, buttresses, transverse walls with pediment and belfry, as well as the concha, affects the mechanical behaviour and the pathology of the structure, which is difficult to study with simplifying models. From the analysis, it is concluded that subsidence problems, combined with seismic actions, lead to the cracking of the masonry, while the existence of buttresses limits the extension of the damage and contributes to the stabilization of the structure.

Comparison of Test Results and finite-element analysis Using Elastoplastic Modeling of 2.5D C/SiC Composites

Carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) have high specific strength and excellent oxidation resistance at ultra-high temperatures and are currently being studied for application to hypersonic vehicles. This paper proposes practical modeling techniques and an analysis flow for structural design using 2.5D C/SiC materials. Based on the change in the specimen stiffness, the fiber and matrix characteristics were respectively defined as linear elastic and nonlinear plastic behaviors. Subsequently, by applying the modified rule of mixtures, the materials of the laminated representative volume element (RVE) unit were defined as possessing homogenized physical properties, and effective constitutive equations were established. To reduce calculations, the plasticity behavior of the matrix was approximated using a bilinear function, and the least-squares method was applied to simulate the plasticity region. Subsequently, finite-element analysis (FEA) and test results were compared and analyzed for the bending problem of the most significant interest in general structures. Defining the 2.5D C/SiC as a homogenized physical property confirmed that the bending behavior and stress field were suitable from a physical perspective.

Based on several references, Asians carry out several daily activities that are different from Westerners, which require a greater range of motion. Because of that, a dual mobility (DM) implant was created that was adapted to the activities of Asian people. One of the factors that might shorten the life of a hip implant is wear. Simulations of wear that are based on computation can guide product design to reduce the amount of adhesive and abrasive wear. Even though advanced modeling approaches have been established, a great deal of wear is still not understood, especially regarding the metal-on-polyethylene articulations found on DM cups. It is critical to examine the wear on the DM cup's head-to-liner ratio to determine the proper head diameter and liner thickness for this DM cup. In this work, wear was analyzed using finite-element analysis and compared between three different femoral head diameters matched with different thicknesses of the polyethylene liner on DM cups. Wear was analyzed throughout the regular walking cycle at each head-to-liner ratio. The findings of this study can be used to develop a dual-mobility artificial hip joint for Asians with the slightest wear.

Three-dimensional auxetic woven fabric structure with in-plane negative Poisson's ratio for composite reinforcement: A finite-element analysis

Numerical modeling of textile structures at the yarn level is challenging, yet provides information not obtainable through experimental studies alone. This study is focused on the development and finite-element analysis (FEA) of a three-dimensional (3D) woven structure with an in-plane negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect, with the aim of exploring its potential applications in polymer composite reinforcement. While experimental and geometrical studies of 3D auxetic woven structures provide primary information, they have limitations in explaining the auxetic behavior of the structure at the yarn level. Additionally, prediction of the auxetic behavior of the 3D woven structure by varying material properties is only possible through FEA. Therefore, to overcome these limitations, a 3D FEA model of the structure was developed using commercially available software (Abaqus CAE-2020) to simulate the auxetic behavior. The structure was then studied for different binding yarn properties once a good agreement had been found between simulated and experimental results. The FEA provides new insights and provokes fresh discussion on the auxetic behavior of the 3D woven structure. One significant finding from the FEA is the strong influence of the axial ( E x ) and radial ( E y ) moduli of the binding yarn on the Poisson's ratio of the 3D woven structure;E x has an inverse relationship, while E y demonstrates a direct relationship with the auxetic behavior of the structure. The developed FEA model is expected to provide a better foundation for the future development of 3D auxetic structures, particularly concerning their application in polymer composite reinforcement.

Hip joint stress distribution changes depending on three-dimensional pelvic orientation: finite-element analysis

Background: Pelvis experiences changes in its orientation due to the alignment of the hip joint and spine, and its orientation might affect both joints. Pelvic tilt on the sagittal plane has been widely discussed;however, the pelvis is oriented also on the coronal and horizontal planes. This study aimed to examine how stress distribution on intact hip joint changes under the three-dimensional pelvic orientation. Methods: Computed tomography data of five patients with unilateral pelvic girdle were analyzed. Thirteen models were evaluated by the MECHANICAL FINDER: neutral position at 0 degrees;10 degrees and 20 degrees anterior and posterior pelvic tilt;10 degrees and 20 degrees pelvic hike and drop;10 degrees and 20 degrees pelvic forward and backward rotation. Stress assessment was performed in four parts of the acetabulum: anterosuperior, posterosuperior, posteroinferior, and central parts. Results: Compared with the neutral position, the mean value of the equivalent stress and maximum principal stress in the anterosuperior part significantly increased by 1.51 times and 1.57 times at 20 degrees posterior tilt, respectively. The maximum principal stress in the anterosuperior part significantly increased by 1.44 times at 20 degrees hike. A significant increase of 1.45 times was found in the maximum principal stress in the anterosuperior part at 20 degrees forward rotation. Conclusions: Local stress accumulated in the anterosuperior acetabulum at the posterior pelvic tilt, pelvic hike, and pelvic forward rotation, which might lead to hip overload. The effect of posterior pelvic tilt appears to be greater for the hip joint than at the pelvic hike or forward rotation. (c) 2023 The Japanese Orthopaedic Association. Published by Elsevier B.V. Lesion Size Location Dependency on Maximum Pressure in Osteochondral Defects: Experiments and finite-element analysis

Background: Osteochondral defects (OCDs) in the knee joint have significant clinical implications, particularly regarding contact pressures and pressure distribution. Understanding how these factors are influenced by defect size and location is crucial for developing effective therapeutic ***/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of defect size and location on contact pressures and pressure distribution in the knee joint. It was hypothesized that an increase in defect size would result in elevated contact pressures and alterations in pressure distribution, with specific variations related to defect *** Design: Descriptive laboratory ***: The study utilized 6 cadaveric knees, including the patella and fibula, subjected to controlled compressive loading for measuring contact pressures. Simultaneously, computed tomography-based models were created for finite-element analysis (FEA) to investigate the impact of varying defect sizes and locations on contact pressures and pressure distribution in the knee joint, excluding the patellofemoral joint. The study employed analysis of variance to assess contact pressure and defect size association. Comparison between medial and lateral femoral condyles at full extension and 30 degrees flexion angle was performed, followed by post hoc testing. Fisher exact test analyzed peak pressure point location and defect size, categorizing them into medial and ***: An increase in defect size corresponded with heightened contact pressures on both medial and lateral femoral condyles at full extension (P = .013 for medial and P = .024 for lateral). However, this correlation did not yield significant differences at 30 degrees of flexion (P = .674 for medial and P = .333 for lateral). During mechanical testing, the highest pressures occurred near 5 mm defect dimensions. FEAs showed a significant increase in pressure and circumferential-edge stress with 7-mm defects. Peak
