Hydrogen airport location selection and fleet assignment under policy considerations

The growing environmental awareness has led to increased expectations for lower carbon travel, prompting governments to start implementing policies encouraging airlines to adopt new energy aircraft. This paper examines the effects of various carbon emission reduction policies, such as taxation and stringent carbon emission constraints, on the operational strategy preferences of hydrogen-powered airlines. A fundamental optimization model for hydrogen airport location selection and fleet assignment is developed, along with 16 heterogeneous model variants that integrate different airline operating strategy preferences. Utilizing historical data from Delta Airlines and the carbon emission standards set by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) for 2030 and 2050, the results of our experiments demonstrate significant potential for reducing carbon emissions and increasing airline revenues through differentiated policies.

The fleet assignment is a key factor affecting the operating costs of an airline. In this paper, we address the fleet assignment problem (FAP) in which the flight route is taken into account. On the basis of the analysis of the airline's cost structure and the space and time method, a more comprehensive mathematical model with regard to the hub-and-spoke network is provided. In the model, not only the classic cost construct of airline but also the spill cost and the recapture revenue are considered. Besides the new model for FAY, the corresponding program is also introduced and the computation results are reported in the end.

This paper proposes fleet assignment using population-based incremental learning (PBIL). Effectiveness of the proposed PBIL based method is verified by comparing with the conventional reactive tabu search (RTS) based method and the actual flight operation data. It is verified that the proposed PBIL based method can reduce costs more than the conventional RTS based method and the actual flight operation data.

fleet assignment is one of the four major steps in airline planning. The objective of the fleet assignment problem (PAP) is to determine which type of aircraft should fly on each flight leg while considering different characteristics and costs associated with different fleet types. This article proposes a multiphase approach to solving the PAP. Backward arcs were used to solve basic FAPs. Then the backward arcs were eliminated by using linear programming. By allowing backward time, our formulation has a similar level of flexibility as the fleet assignment model with time-window (FAMTW), but the problem size grows much slower than FAMTW. Examples using real data obtained from a major airline are included in this article.

One of the direct results of air transport liberalization has been the development of publicly supported links on thin markets in remote regions when service is deemed necessary. We present a flight scheduling and fleet assignment optimization model that may assist public authorities to establish the level of service requirements for subsidized air transport networks. With the results of the optimization model, a welfare analysis of the network is carried out, distinguishing between passenger, airline, airport and government surpluses. The optimization model and subsequent welfare analysis were applied to the PSO network of Norway, which is currently the largest in Europe. The results indicate that improvements over the current network can be obtained for all relevant stakeholders simultaneously, with savings in the order of $1.2 million daily. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Design of carrier-based offshore CCS system: Plant location and fleet assignment

As part of efforts to mitigate the global effects of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) technology has drawn large attention from the engineering research community. Compared to a pipeline-based system, an offshore CCS system using Liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier ships and offshore oil wells is expected to offer a more flexible and efficient mode of CCS to many countries, especially nations such as Korea where a pipeline-based system is inherently infeasible. In this paper we discuss a carrier-based offshore CCS system, in which CO2 carriers may transport crude oils on inbound voyage, and seek the optimal configuration of the system including liquefaction plant location, fleet assignment, and the optimal pressure and temperature of the cargo CO2. We determine the optimal system configuration including the liquefaction plant location and CO2 carrier fleet assignment with respect to the overall transport cost of the CCS system. We use two sequential linear programming problems - plant location and fleet assignment, with the pressure and temperature state of cargo CO2 as the key CCS chain parameters. We find that the optimal state of CO2 at each stage in the system can deviate from the triple point, depending on the system's configuration and throughput. As a case study, we demonstrate that the optimal cargo state can be different from the triple point depending on the system configuration. In this case it is -39 degrees C and 10 bar and the overall transport cost of CO2 sequestration is 26.7 USD/ton. This result is based on the specific scenario of the CO2 Capture and Storage system for Korea using southeastern Asian offshore oil wells. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Given a flight schedule and fleets of different types of planes, the fleet assignment problem is to determine the type of plane to assign to each flight segment. The fleet assignment problem is modeled as a multicommodity flow problem on a time-space directed network. This paper studies the complexity of the problem and the behavior of the solution as a function of the number of fleets. An analytical expression is given for the minimum number of planes required by one fleet;the complexity of the feasibility problem for two fleets is unknown and for three fleets it is NP-complete. Also, the ratio of the minimum number of planes required by K fleets to the minimum number of planes required by one fleet can be at least as large as 3/8 log2 K and the LP relaxation of an integer problem for the minimum number of planes required by K fleets can be quite bad since its optimal value equals the minimum number of planes required by one fleet. When a frequently used connectivity condition is imposed, the one-fleet problem is NP-complete. We also analyze a model in which the constraints on the size of the fleets are omitted. Here the 2-fleet model is a network flow problem, but the minimum cost problem for 3 fleets is NP-hard.

Flight scheduling and fleet assignment are important steps of an airline planning process. In light of the reciprocal relationship between air transport supply and demand, a key element of these models is to devise effective methods to both incorporating estimation of total market demand and allocating passengers over the available itineraries in a specific market. In this paper, we present a novel mixed integer nonlinear flight scheduling and fleet assignment optimization model wherein air travel demand generation and allocation are simultaneously and consistently endogenized. Using a nested logit formulation, we jointly model competition among air travel itineraries and appraise the contribution of specific itinerary attributes to demand generation, therefore yielding a more comprehensive and explicit representation of supply-demand interactions. Computational testing based on realistic problem instances reveals that the model can optimize mid-size hub and-spoke networks within reasonable time. Further analyses illustrate the benefits that can be derived from the application of the proposed approach using real-world data for a major European airline. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach can significantly enhance operating profits by up to 6.9% and better reveal opportunities for demand stimulation against a conventional approach using inelastic trip generation. Novel approach to deal with demand volatility on fleet assignment models

One of the important applications of operations research in the airline industry is fleet assignment. The problem is posed as an assignment of aircraft capacity to flight legs at the planning level, in general one year before departure date. The fleet assignment problem comes after schedule design and without any influence on it. Even if the schedule is defined by a set of flight legs, the source of revenues for airlines is itineraries, many of which have more than one leg. Existing research is based on the itinerary-based fleet assignment model (IFAM) that captures the network effects. Nevertheless, the difficulty of forecasting itinerary demand prevents the widespread implementation in the airline industry of the IFAM and impacts heavily on its performance. This paper proposes a new model based on itinerary grouping. Our itinerary group fleet assignment model (IGFAM) deals with the difficulties caused by itinerary forecast by replacing them with aggregated demand forecasts. We conduct comparisons between models, considering their respective profit based on real-life demand using a simulation framework. Though the comparison is conservative, it still leads to the new model delivering an advantage in almost all circumstances. The greatest benefits are observed at the highest demand volatility.

An integrated flight scheduling and fleet assignment problem under uncertainty

Flight scheduling and fleet assignment are the two most prominent decisions in airline planning as they contribute toward a majority of the costs and revenues of an airline company. Moreover, these decisions have to be made 10-12 weeks prior to the flight date as mandated by labor unions in order to accommodate cabin crew scheduling requirements. Since demand and fares are highly uncertain, a two-stage stochastic programming model was developed for flight scheduling and fleet assignment where the fleet family assigned to each scheduled flight leg is decided at the first-stage. Then, the fleet type to assign to each flight leg is decided at the second-stage based on demand and fare realization. Sample average approximation (SAA) algorithm is then used to solve the problem and provide information on the quality of the solution. To the extent of our knowledge, this work is the first to apply the SAA algorithm to the airline industry. Experiments conducted on a case study based on a flight network of a legacy airline company show that modeling the stochastic problem with 100 scenarios is sufficient to capture the effect of demand and fare uncertainty and to provide a solution with an optimality gap less than 1% within a reasonable computational time. A sensitivity analysis on different parameters of the model was also carried out and points out the applicability of the proposed model and solution in practice. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
