We analyze the impact of hard decision (HD)forward error correction (FEC) and soft decision (SD)-FEC on the inter-core crosstalk (XT) limitations in elastic optical networks using multi-core fibers for several routing, spectrum and core assignment algorithms through computer simulations. Results obtained show that the use of SD-FEC can reduce the XT impact on the blocking probability (BP) up to 79% in comparison with the HD-FEC. Additionally, the BP by XT of random, first-fit (FF), core priorization-FF and XT-greedy algorithms with SD-FEC can decrease by 64%, 65%, 68% and 79% on average over the range of network load considered, when compared with the same strategies considering HD-FEC.

Simple cross parity check codes have been well known for decades in the areas of magnetic recording and radiation-hardened memory in space applications. However, the computational power requirements of higher dimensional cross codes mean that priority has been given to different forward error correction methods, with the result that cross parity check codes have not become sufficiently generalized to include a higher number of dimensions. In the last two decades, the focus has mainly been on Reed-Solomon codes, Hamming codes, BCH codes, convolutional codes and turbo codes. In this paper, the issues behind generalized multidimensional parity check codes are explored again in relation to current main-stream interest by covering parity check codes in the form of low-density parity checks. I will put forward a new solution to the multidimensional parity check code decoding process for low data rate downlinks in CubeSat satellites. I propose that the high computational power of software-defined radio can be utilized for iterative decoding of CubeSat satellite transmissions in ground control segments, ensuring that onboard multidimensional parity encoders are as simple to use as possible.

In the second generation digital video broadcast standards, such as DVB-T2, DVB-S2, DVB-C2, etc., is applied a powerful channel coding scheme to transmit data on the non-ideal communication channels with limited bandwidth due to the serial concatenation of BCH (Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghen) and Low-Density-Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. The high-speed requirements, long data block lengths and multi-parametric encoding present complex challenges in the efficient implementation of a hardware architecture. This paper proposes a new approach to parallel implementation of BCH and LDPC encoders with adjustable encoding parameters, supporting all the different BCH + LDPC code configurations. The proposed solution is fully backward compatible to legacy decoder on the receiving side.

X-band low-phase noise oscillator employing substrate integrated waveguide dual-mode filter

A novel low-phase noise oscillator employing a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) dual-mode bandpass filter as a frequency stabilisation element within its feedback loop is proposed. The SIW dual-mode filter is implemented based on the use of the two degenerate modes (TE102 and TE201) and has a larger group delay peak than the conventional SIW cavity resonator. By taking advantage of the large group delay peak, the phase noise of the oscillator has significant improvement. An X-band oscillator with a GaAs HEMT packaged transistor has been designed and measured. At an oscillation frequency of 9.04 GHz, the measured phase noise is -111.9 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. The output power is 6.1 dBm and the figure of merit is -198 dBc/Hz.

In this paper, we construct a new prototype of parallel-transmission wireless visible light communication (VLC) systems using Color-Shift Keying (CSK). The prototype consists of a Liquid Crystal Display as a transmitter and an Image Sensor as a receiver. We show the CSK scheme can improve information transmission capability of VLC systems compared with that using mono-color. We also show an effect of a forward error correction code for VLC systems.

Dicode pulse position modulation (DiPPM) has been considered as a solution for the bandwidth consumption issue that other existing pulse position modulation (PPM) formats suffer from. This is because it has a line rate that is twice that of the original data rate. This paper considers for the first time forward error correction (FEC) Reed Solomon (RS) codes to improve the error performance of a DiPPM. The results show that the error performance in the system can be improved by using FEC code when the RS is working at its optimum parameters. The error performance of the uncoded DiPPM system has been compared with a RS coded DiPPM system and one using maximum likelihood sequence detector (MLSD) in terms of the number of photons per pulse, transmission efficiency, and bandwidth expansion. The DiPPM with RS code offers superior performance compared to the uncoded DiPPM and DiPPM using MLSD, requiring only 4.5 x 10(3) photons per pulse, when operating at a bandwidth equal or above to 0.9 times the original data rate. This is with an optimum code rate of approximately 3/4, and a codeword length of 2(5).

In order to mitigate the deleterious effects of multipath fading in satellite wireless channels, forward error correction (FEC) techniques had been used for past several decades. Reed-Solomon (RS) coding is one of the preferred FECs for current satellite systems that experience deep fading. For satellite channels, often a direct path also exists along with the multipath components, and the attenuation due to fading can be characterized with Rician statistics. In this paper, we present simplified bit error rate (BER) expression of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation using RS code in slow flat Rician fading. The analytical BER values have been validated through MATLAB based simulations. A detailed discussion on the development of the simulation code is also included.

Low-density parity-check code for high-speed fibre-optic communication and its experimental verification

Although low-density parity-check (LDPC) code has been proved as a powerful forward error correction code for fibre optic communication, its soft-decoding requires high quantisation resolution which is difficult to achieve for high-speed fibre-optic communication systems. A modi. cation to LDPC decoding algorithms is proposed to effectively improve the performance at quantisation resolution as low as two-bit or one-bit. The good decoding performance of LDPC code for error correction is confirmed by experiment. Compared with the RS(255, 239) code commonly used in optical fibre communication, a Q-factor improvement of 2-dB is obtained in the experiment for an LDPC code with quasi-cyclic structure at the same redundancy as the RS code. Furthermore, the impacts of sampling phase and channel estimation using real data over the decoding performance are analysed.

43 Gbit/s, 200 km unrepeatered transmission experiment using high-sensitivity digital OEIC receiver module

The first transmission results using a monolithic digital optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC), which consists or a uni-travelling-carrier photodiode and an InP high electron mobility transistor decision circuit, are presented. High receiver sensitivity of -30.2 dBm was obtained at the bit rate or 43 Gbit/s with 150 km dispersion-shifted fibre transmission. It is confirmed that the transmission distance can be extended to over 200 km by employing forward error correction code.
