Numerical modeling of phenomena on modern supercomputers using finite difference methods requires development of complex application software capable of adapting to both hardware configuration and the simulation process in order to provide satisfactory efficiency. In the paper two parallel programs, which employ the alternating-triangular method for solving of Dirichlet problems for the Poisson equation in unit square, are studied. The first program is a conventional one, based on Message Passing Interface (MPI), while the second one is developed with LuNA programming system. LuNA automates construction of numerical programs for multicomputers. Scalability and efficiency of both programs are compared.

Implementation of a three dimensional three-phase fluid flow ("oil-water-gas") numerical model in LuNA fragmented programming system

To overcome the difficulties of efficient scalable numerical algorithms implementation on multicomputers with a large number of computing nodes, LuNA system is being developed. LuNA automatically generates a code related to communications, resources management and dynamic workload balancing, thus simplifying construction of parallel programs. To examine the efficiency of numerical model implementation, created with LuNA, a real application of a three-phase (oil, water and gas) fluid filtration simulation is studied. The application algorithm is parallelized and implemented using LuNA and conventional approach using MPI (Message Passing Interface). A comparative performance testing of the two implementations is done. The results show that LuNA implementation is easier to develop, but its efficiency is significantly lower than the efficiency of MPI program, but manual tuning of the program execution makes its efficiency comparable to that of MPI program.

The paper is devoted to the problem of reduction of complexity of development of numerical parallel programs for distributed memory computers with hybrid (CPU+GPU) computing nodes. The basic idea is to employ a high-level representation of an application algorithm to allow its automated execution on multicomputers with hybrid nodes without a programmer having to do low-level programming. LuNA is a programming system for numerical algorithms, which implements the idea, but only for CPU. In the paper we propose a LuNA language extension, as well as necessary run-time algorithms to support GPU utilization. For that a user only has to provide a limited number of computational GPU procedures using CUDA, while the system will take care of such associated low-level problems, as jobs scheduling, CPU-GPU data transfer, network communications and others. The algorithms developed and implemented take advantage of concerning informational dependencies of an application and support automated tuning to available hardware configuration and application input data.

In this paper, a parallel implementation of the cellular-automata interference algorithm for two waves using the fragmented programming technology and LuNA system based on it is proposed. The technology is based on a strategy of data flow control. Unlike existing systems and technologies, LuNA provides a unified technology for implementing parallel programs on a heterogeneous multicomputer. The LuNA program contains a description of data fragments, computational fragments, and information dependencies between them. In the work, the LuNA program was executed on a computational cluster with homogeneous nodes. The results of comparison of the LuNA and MPI implementations showed that the execution time of the LuNA program exceeded that of the MPI program. This is due to the peculiarities of algorithms used for the distribution, search and transfer of data and computation fragments between the nodes of a cluster. The complexity of writing the LuNA program is much lower than for the MPI program.

The fragmented programming technology and the language implementing it are briefly introduced as well as LuNA fragmented programming system, on the example of two-dimensional boundary value problem solution, for liquid filtration "oil-water-gas" system. For parallel implementation of the boundary value problem, the parallel longitudinal-transverse sweep algorithm was applied. Using this method, the fragmented program in the LuNA system has also been implemented. The calculations are made for different number of points in the spatial variables. To compare the quality of implementation the applied numerical algorithm has been implemented in several variations: the sequential program, the parallel program using MPI and the fragmented parallel program in LuNA language using LuNA programming system.

The organization of high-performance execution of a fragmented program has encountered with the problem of choosing of an acceptable way of its execution. The potentialities of optimizing the execution at the stages of fragmented program development, compilation and execution are considered. The methods and algorithms of such an optimization are proposed to be included into the LuNA fragmented programming language, compiler, generator and run-time system.
