There are an increasing number of qualitative studies which focus on the dyad (couples, families, caregivers-patients, health care professionals-patients). However, there is limited literature regarding qualitative methodology for dyadic analysis when members of the couple have been interviewed separately. The aim of this article is to share the knowledge we gained from undertaking a novel approach to dyadic analysis. We used an adapted version of the framework method on data gathered in a study exploring the impact of prostate cancer on younger men and their partners. In this article, we examine and reflect on the challenges of this type of analysis and describe how we analyzed the interview data from a dyadic point of view, to share what we learned in the process.

'Mental health is a mystery': patient perspectives on treatment engagement in the referral process to specialty geriatric mental health services

ObjectivesRaue and Sirey proposed a theoretical treatment engagement model for older adults outlining steps from identifying mental health problems, referral to specialty care, and involvement in treatment. Using this model as a guide, the current study aimed to explore patient perspectives of their experience in the process of referral and first meeting with geriatric mental health services. Furthermore, the current study aimed to identify opportunities to enhance patient engagement in these beginning steps of the treatment engagement *** geriatric outpatients (7 psychology, 6 psychiatry) presenting with concerns of anxiety, depression, and/or stress were interviewed. Interviews were analyzed using the framework *** emerged as suggested by Raue and Sirey's model, including attitudes toward treatment (e.g. stigma), treatment expectations, and treatment preferences. In addition, new themes emerged related to modifiable individual factors (the patient as a passive recipient of care, mental health literacy, and ageism) as well as social influences on treatment engagement. Participants primarily noted opportunities for psychoeducation as a potential treatment engagement intervention to implement within the current referral *** is the first study to examine the applicability of Raue and Sirey's theoretical engagement model in a clinical sample. Findings both support and expand the model and offer several recommendations for improving treatment engagement for older patients.

framework analysis methods (FAMs) are structured approaches to qualitative data analysis that originally stem from large-scale policy research. A defining feature of FAMs is the development and application of a matrix-based analytical framework. These methods can be used across research paradigms and are thus particularly useful tools in the health professions education (HPE) researcher's toolbox. Despite their utility, FAMs are not frequently used in HPE research. In this AMEE Guide, we provide an overview of FAMs and their applications, situating them within specific qualitative research approaches. We also report the specific characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of FAMs in relation to other popular qualitative analysis methods. Using a specific type of FAM-i.e. the framework method-we illustrate the stages typically involved in doing data analysis with an FAM. Drawing on Sandelowski and Barroso's continuum of data transformation, we argue that FAMs tend to remain close to raw data and be descriptive or exploratory in nature. However, we also illustrate how FAMs can be harnessed for more interpretive analyses. We propose that FAMs are valuable resources for HPE researchers and demonstrate their utility with specific examples from the HPE literature.

BackgroundTo assess the barriers and facilitators associated with upscaling the Transmural Trauma Care Model (TTCM), a multidisciplinary and patient-centred transmural rehabilitation care ***-structured interviews were conducted with eight trauma surgeons, eight hospital-based physiotherapists, eight trauma patients, and eight primary care physiotherapists who were part of a trauma rehabilitation network. Audio recordings of the interviews were made and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed using a framework method based on the "constellation approach". Identified barriers and facilitators were grouped into categories related to structure, culture, and *** barriers and facilitators to upscaling were identified. Under structure, barriers and facilitators belonged to one of five themes: "financial structure", "communication structure", "physical structures and resources", "rules and regulations", and "organisation of the network". Under culture, the five themes were "commitment", "job satisfaction", "acting as a team", "quality and efficiency of care", and "patients' experience". Under practice, the two themes were "practical issues at the outpatient clinic" and "knowledge gained".ConclusionThe success of upscaling the TTCM differed across hospitals and settings. Exploring the sources of cervical cancer screening self-efficacy among rural females: A qualitative study

Aim: Evidence showed self-efficacy was relevant to rural females' cervical cancer screening behaviour. However, little is known about sources of self-efficacy in cervical cancer screening among rural females. This study aimed to explore sources of self-efficacy in cervical cancer screening among rural females. Design: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Both users and providers of cervical cancer screening services in rural areas of China were recruited through maximum variation sampling. methods: Individual semi-structured interviews through telephone calls were conducted. Data were analysed via six main stages of the framework method, with the social cognitive theory as a reference. Results: Four main sources were identified, including personal screening experience, hearing about other women's screening experiences, professional health education and consultation, and emotional status. Personal screening experience included enactive mastery of completing the screening behaviour and cognitive mastery of internalisation of the screening. Only the experience of completing cervical cancer screening behaviour was not strong enough to improve self-efficacy. Cognitive mastery showed more critical influence. Conclusion: These four sources of rural females' cervical cancer screening self-efficacy matched with the major sources of self-efficacy of the social cognitive theory. Cognition was critical to influencing the screening self-efficacy. Intervention strategies aimed at enhancing rural females' cervical cancer screening self-efficacy can be developed from these four major sources. This study explores the beliefs and attitudes about the psychosocial mechanisms of peer support work among users who participated in Critical Time Intervention-Task Shifting (CTI-TS), which tested the acceptability and feasibility of a peer support work model to improve community-based mental health care for individuals with psychosis in Latin America. We conducted a secondary analysis of 15 in-depth interviews with CTI-TS participants in Chile, using the framework method and defined the framework domains based on five major mechanisms of peer support work identified by a recent literature review. The analysis revealed that users' perceptions of peer support work mechanisms were strongly shaped by personal motivations, beliefs about professional hierarchies, familial support, and the Chilean mental health system's incipient recovery orientation. The findings underscore the importance of adopting culturally tailored strategies to promote peer support work, such as involving mental health professionals and fostering equal-powered relationships between PSWs and users.

The experiences of palliative care professionals and their responses to work-related stress: A qualitative study

Objectives Previous qualitative research has demonstrated that palliative care professionals (PCPs) deal with a wide array of emotionally challenging issues associated with the care they provide. Although previous research has identified self-care strategies PCPs engage in, there is a lack of focus on what responses are helpful and/or unhelpful. The aim of the current study is to understand and describe the experiences of PCPs and to explore the helpful and unhelpful responses to work-related stress they employ. Design This was a qualitative study of the experiences of working PCPs in a hospice setting. methods Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted and subsequently analysed using the framework method. Results The current study revealed five overarching themes: (1) Sources of Meaning and Purpose (making a difference, personal growth), (2) Sources of Stress (emotional challenges, patient family dynamics, work environment factors, public perception, uncontrollability of symptoms), (3) Personal Impact (life engagement, perceptions of death), (4) Unhelpful Responses (self-doubt, emotional suppression, rumination, overidentifying, lack of self-care), and (5) Helpful Responses (acceptance, being present, perspective taking, being able to switch off, social support, active self-care). Conclusions The experiences of PCPs can be interpreted from or directly mapped onto the psychological (in)flexibility model in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It is suggested that ACT training for professionals may encourage more reliable and explicit helpful responses and reduce the impact of unhelpful responses. Thus, an ACT training intervention may enhance wellbeing and effectiveness in PCPs.

Questions: What is the reach, dose delivered, dose received and fidelity of the Transmural Trauma Care Model (TTCM)? What are the barriers and facilitators associated with the implementation of the TTCM? Design: Mixed-methods process evaluation with quantitative evaluation of the extent to which the TTCM was implemented as intended and qualitative evaluation of barriers and facilitators to its implementation. Participants: Focus group participants included trauma patients, trauma surgeons, hospital-based physiotherapists and primary care network physiotherapists. Outcome measures: Implementation was assessed with reach, dose delivered, dose received and fidelity. Data analysis: A framework method was used to analyse the focus groups and the 'constellation approach' was used to categorise barriers and facilitators into three categories: structure, culture and practice. Results: The TTCM's reach was 81%, its dose delivered was 99% and 100%, and its dose received was 95% and 96% for the multidisciplinary TTCM consultation hours at the outpatient clinic for trauma patients and the primary care network physiotherapists, respectively. Various fidelity scores ranged from 66 to 93%. Numerous barriers and facilitators associated with the implementation of the TTCM were identified and categorised. Conclusion: This process evaluation showed that the TTCM was largely implemented as intended. Furthermore, various facilitators and barriers were identified that need to be considered when implementing the TTCM more widely. Differences were found among stakeholders but they were generally of the opinion that if the barriers were overcome, the quality of care and patient satisfaction were likely to improve significantly after implementing the TTCM. Background Active-6 is exploring how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted physical activity behaviour among Year 6 children (aged 10-11 years) and their parents in Southwest England. Initial findings from the Active-6 project have shown a 7-8 min decrease in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and an increase in sedentary behaviour among children following the easing of restrictions in the UK in latter half of 2021. This finding suggests that the pandemic has had a persistent impact on child physical activity behaviour. This paper explored the possible mechanisms behind these changes. methods Interviews with parents (n = 21), members of school staff (n = 9) and focus groups with children aged 10-11 years (n = 47) were conducted between August and December 2021 to discuss the impact of the pandemic on child physical activity behaviour. The framework method was used for analysis. Results Five themes spanning two key stages of the pandemic were described. Three themes related to the period of lockdowns and fluctuating restrictions (March 2020 - April 2021). These included: Theme 1) Lockdown: A short-lived adventure;Theme 2) Access to facilities during restrictions;and Theme 3) The importance of the parent. A further two themes were identified related to the period following the gradual easing of restrictions in April 2021. These included: Theme 4) An overwhelming return to normal;and Theme 5) Reopening fatigue. Conclusions The analysis suggested that feelings of novelty experienced during the initial stages of lockdown waned as restrictions were prolonged, creating an increasingly challenging period for parents and their children. However, during periods of restrictions, the importance of parental encouragement and access to appropriate facilities in the local and home environment helped facilitate physical activity. A Health App Platform Providing a Budget to Purchase Preselected Apps as an Innovative Way to Support Public Health: Qualitative Study With End Users and Other Stakeholders

Background: eHealth has the potential to improve health outcomes. However, this potential is largely untapped. Individuals face an overload of apps and have difficulties choosing suitable apps for themselves. In the FitKnip experiment, individuals were given access to a health app platform, where they could purchase reliable preselected health apps with a personal budget of euro100 (US $107.35). By conducting a prospective study, we aimed to scientifically evaluate the FitKnip experiment as an innovative way to improve population ***: The aim of the experiment was to scientifically evaluate the FitKnip experiment as an innovative way to improve population health. More specifically, we conducted an in-depth qualitative evaluation of the concept and acceptability of FitKnip, its perceived impact on health empowerment, as well as the roles of stakeholders for the future implementation of a health app platform through focus group ***: This study followed a phenomenological research design and included 7 focus group interviews with end users and 1 with stakeholders, held between July and December 2020. End users were recruited through various institutions in the Netherlands, for example, insurance companies and local governments. All focus groups were semistructured using interview guides and were held via videoconferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic measures. Each participant received access to a health app platform where they were enabled to purchase reliable, preselected health apps with a budget of euro100 (US $107.35). The budget was valid for the entire research period. The health app platform offered 38 apps. A third party, a health care coalition, selected the apps to be included in FitKnip.
